I was privileged to be at this show. Otherworldly experience. Years later saw Fripp/Bruford and that also powerful

I was very lucky that cold February morning to get in to see this show by being a true sneaky New Yorker and slipping in ahead of the very long line outside the Kitchen. Robert Fripp sat on a stool, next to two Revox 77 tape recorders, placed on their sides, one on the left placed on its right side which was recording, the one on the right placed on its left side, which was taking up the tape and playing the tape back into the first tape recorder. Both had large pieces of tape over the unused reel areas preventing them from moving. I saw the second show, and Fripp explained that having done the first show, the second would not be as spontaneous as the first since the themes were probably going to be repeated for the second show. The loft was surrounded by many large unadorned windows, open to a cold bitter blue day in Soho. It was totally mesmerizing, and very much like that first side of No Pussyfooting called "The Heavenly Music Corporation". A friend I was with taped it and offered it on the Village Voice listing to exchange it for a rare limited edition double Eno record of film music that was eventually released. But lo and behold, Robert Fripp answered the ad, met with my friend, demanding the return of the tape as Fripp was very particular about not wanting it bootlegged. My friend gave him the tape, but it had already been copied. The real modifying instrument for the pristine sound of the guitar is the fantastic foot pedal that enabled him to glide the volume of the guitar to his liking and then to turn off the looping and just solo on top of the background. Hard to believe it was 40 years ago. Seems like yesterday.

I recall reaing about these performances way back in the late '70's. These, together with the Fripp and Eno tour and dates in Paris are quite legendary. I seem to recall he had his hair cut whilst performing at one point. I have loved his Frippertronics and Soundscapes and appreciated the recent release of Under Heavy Manners after many years of being unavailable on cd.

Man, what a treaure trove of sounds! Fripp was really just starting to explore the possibilities of tape-loop frippertronics here. I appreciate the contrasting tension and unease and subdued beauty of this performance.
