Antonio Mintz might've thrown things off kilter. The chord progressions of the chorus are like modulations in and of themselves, so a modulation would have been too much.

I'm late to the party but I LOVE this song (and love this album). All you cornballs that have sth negative to say bc his background is jazz and act like he's "supposed" to stay one way need to keep that to your boring ass lives. I've got MADD respect for Rob and a crush on Casey Benjamin even when he was part of HEAVy, but I'm a fonk head too and I love that they don't just dabble in other realms, they made it sound GOOOUADt! Casey Benjamin is so ill with vocal arrangements. Would love to meet him. This is a great team and I'm proud of their sound. Now I definitely gotta get the album and come to their VA show.

Because when one is so talented and recognize as a jazz innovator I think it's sad to flirt with mainstream music. Just an opinion.

I think you're missing a crucial point about "jazz": it has ALWAYS reflected the spirit of the times, it has always found inspiration in the "mainstream" of the different eras, be it Broadway musicals (the "pop" of the 20's and 30's), movie soundtracks, blues/R'n'R, gospel, soul, Beatles, funk... and of course disco. You really think Glasper (and so many others) needs to sell out at this point? Couldn't it be a genuine, artistic way to branch out and provide his own take on what is basically dance music (remember, jazz started as exactly that)? Can't it be at the same time danceable fun and musically interesting? You're entitled to dislike it, needless to say, but "talent" and "innovation" are compatible with what you call the "mainstream". Let the man do as he pleases, I for one dig it immensely when "jazzers" go mainstream and add harmonic/melodic goodies to funky beats, and if you look at the other comments you'll find a long list of greats who did exactly that.
