Robert Layton was born in Madison, Indiana on August 24th , 1946. He graduated from high
school in 1964 and then attended the University of Arizona for one year before transferring to
Ohio University. He joined the ROTC program at Ohio University in 1966. Robert went to
Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania for his basic training in 1967. He graduated from college in 1969.
He then went to Fort Benning, Georgia for his infantry officer’s basic course and then went on to
complete jump school and ranger training. His first assignment as an officer was to Fort Leonard
Wood, Missouri in 1969, where he was a training officer for a basic training company. In
January of 1970, Robert received orders to Vietnam. He served in Panama for 2 weeks before
being sent on to Vietnam, where he joined the 101st airborne division. He was assigned to Bravo
Company, 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment. Robert and his unit were involved in various skirmishes around the firebase Ripcord. He was also actively involved in the battle that took place on Hill 1000. After being the platoon leader for his unit for 7 months, Robert was then reassigned to be an S-2 Intelligence Officer. After fulfilling his two-year commitment for the ROTC program, he
left the Army for good. Robert went back to college and completed his Master’s degree in Urban
Planning and then later, Economics. He worked for 32 years in the field of urban economics.
Robert is now retired and enjoys giving back to his community by volunteering weekly with
Habitat for Humanity.
