Robert Mapplethorpe brought the photogravure technique, originally dating to the late 19th century, into contemporary art. The technique results in great detail and a range of tones, as is particularly evident in Orchid. This powerful work dates to Mapplethorpe’s diagnosis with AIDS, and, as the flower is presented at full bloom, it can be viewed as in conversation with Mapplethorpe’s preoccupation with mortality. As such, this work is revelatory of both the beauty of nature as well as the tenuousness of life.
