Robert Merton's Middle Range Theory

An overview of Merton's attempt to marry theory to research. Merton recognized the problems that sociology, as an academic discipline, had in trying to use grand theories to explain society when mounting small research projects. With middle range theories, he advocates for less grand, and more specific theories which can more easily be integrated into individual research projects.
