Your channel is an excellent find!, thank you so much for spotlighting such an underrated writer, truly grateful for your take on this. John Crowley is another author who encourages those sweetly melancholic feelings despite being a bit different from Nathan.

Thanks for this overview! I enjoyed it! I met Robert Nathan back in 1978 at his home, with wife Anna Lee, on Doheny Dr. in Hollywood...I was there for an interview with Anna. He remained seated in a rocking chair (with a British Union Jack quilt over his legs to keep warm). He was surprised that I knew who he was let alone that I'd read a number of his books. One of his personal favorites (and mine) was a book you didn't review here entitled "One More Spring" (1933)...He enjoyed the somewhat sanitized 1935 20th Century Fox film version too w/ Warner Baxter and Janet Gaynor which was impossible to see at that time (now available on KZbin!).

I have a paperback of One More Spring. Wish I had met him back in the day like you did. That's very exciting. I'm happy to learn you enjoyed that video. It was one of the first ones I made.

I found the book Mia at the Last Book Store in LA. The cover spoke to me. Paperback with a young woman on it. The pages were old and yellowed and the cover-brittle. It was a small book and I decided I had to have it in my collection. I finished the book just now and I loved it. It’s a book I know I’ll reread. It almost feels as if it was written for me. No one online seems to cover it. I’m glad I found your video and that you even mentioned it! I’d love a future video of you talking about your thoughts on Mia!

Thank you for this post. I was unaware of this author’s novels being the the inspiration for two of my favorite movies. I shall head to Amazon to find his books. I ordered the BARLEY FIELDS as soon as you showed that one. Thanks again though my wallet is having a hard time at present.

I read a Robert Nathan interview in Writers Digest in the early 80s, the interviewer was comparing him to Ray Bradbury which peaked my interest, I went out and found some of his work and become a fan. I read somewhere else later that Ray Bradbury was a big fan of Nathans when he was starting out . His name is always in my mind when I'm on the hunt in the stacks. Really enjoyed seeing him getting some love and attention here. Thanks.

Portrait Of Jennie is possibly the most beautiful story I have read. I read it when I was about 18 and all my life I have regarded it and the film as my favourite ( a little in front of Crime & Punishment with its beautiful Sonia scene ) I have been interested for many years in the parallel Space/Time correlation of Einstein and Jennie. It is a beautiful love story and I think quite a few artists would identify with the love affair with Jennie and their muses in their dreams they write and paint. I don't think the story is that unusual for artists. I'd go so far as to suggest he may have had a very realistic dream before he wrote Jennie. Thanks so much for your channel and this on Robert Nathan.
