Anyone who grew up in the 70s or earlier knows that busting chops is part of socializing. Whether in PGH and you call it "jagging" or whether you are in SE DC and call it "the dozens" it's all the same. Chop-busting. It's the friendly joking way to say, "bring your game up to par, bucko." Or if it's a band you could say "nice Jackson 5 song rewritten to sound original, good work."

I love GBV but you're insane if you think anything touches the first two weezer albums or at least Blue. Both bands put out a few good records and churned out garbage for decades, it's just hard to be mean to Bob lol. At least Weezer has white album recently.

@imrippingthefuckingheadoff Weezer's blue album has maybe 4 good songs. Its a quintessential b rate alt record that has a radio single every 3rd song to offset the subpar filler(see foo fighters, king of leon for more examples). Robert pollard has written hundreds of songs that rivers could never write. Bob's drawing from the 13th floor elevators, devo, & king crimson all in one song sometimes. The music IQs of these 2 groups are leagues apart. Put it this way, Bob's the teacher & weezer's the dumb 4th graders he used to teach, occasinally accidentally doing something intriguing while playing dress up😂

Love it but flaming lips are very prolific
@seanoneil2779 ай бұрын
I think your use of "prolific" is, shall we say, expansive and generous. It's not a synonym for "great band" or "I like them." Also, that overhyped Yoshimi album, what are 40+ year old men doing seeing the world through the eyes of a japanese anime character? Anyone hanging about in that POV has to be having a laugh on the people who buy the album or see the show live. "Never grow up" can be misinterpreted by some folks as a literal psychological construct.
@spammyspam2389 ай бұрын
@@seanoneil277 what a pretentious and condescending comment. Literally, they are prolific - they have released a lot of music over the years. I think they have great moments. I don’t know what your beef with the Yoshimi album is but the weird angle you’ve taken of 40 year old men seeing the world through the eyes of a Japanese anime character is your own invention. That is not the album.

@@spammyspam238 Oh my, she said as she clutched her pearls, I just read the most condeSCENding comment about a pretentious "art-rock" band. What's that you say? What made it condescending? Why it's the fact that this person DID NOT AGREE WITH ME. How preTENtious! How condeSCENding! Did NOT agree with me! Imagine THAT!

They do try. Credit for reach even if what they reach toward isn't as interesting as they think it might be. A little too slick, a bit too much hat for the number of cattle held.

please tell me they're not on Yankee HF - i bought it vinyl back at the time. doubt i've played it more than a handful of times. Very weak sounding, in every sense, i thought.
@seanoneil2779 ай бұрын
@@Unfunny_Username_389 It may make me sound grumpy, but the last start-to-finish Wilco album I liked was the one closest to Uncle Tupelo's music. A.M. Ever since then (starting with Being There) it seems like Wilco has been Tweedy's vehicle for implementing the 70s music he loved as a kid, re-arranged for today, hiding the influences somewhat so he doesn't get accused of mining Top 40 songs etc. I keep waiting to hear that his hot new live cover song is "Brandy" by Looking Glass.
@Unfunny_Username_3899 ай бұрын
@@seanoneil277 Yeah I hear that about Tweedy. Ugh. But tbf I think Bob is keen on his '70s iconography - e.g. Boston Spaceships?
@seanoneil2779 ай бұрын
@@Unfunny_Username_389 Well he's a touch older than Tweedy isn't he? And his early stated fondness for The Who Live at Leeds sound, that's a whole other ocean from Tweedy's 70s. One was a record digging fanatic as a youth, the other more a radio listener. That's how it seems to me. But what do I know I can't even play the autoharp. GbV (cobra verde version) is the most guttural bottom heavy guitar sound you can find in the GbV history line, sounds almost slick compared to the old Live at Leeds vibe. Do the Collapse, for example. The album cover, almost fancy! Recently I was listening to a 70s music e-station, had a whole lot of Jeff Lynne/ELO stuff on it. How many songs did ELO do that were a bald rewrite of an already past hit, with slightly different lyrics? Not a comical touch like Yankovic. But just the same song rewritten. A tribute, of sorts. Or a lazy rewrite. Today, sounds lazy. As a young man, sounded a tribute. This is how Tweedy's post-A.M. work strikes me, often times, when I hear Blue Swede or some Philly 70s soul in the background of a Wilco song.
