I am marking the day I finally found the artist responsible for my favourite track of all time. 2/12/2021 Here's the backstory - I was 14 years old listening to late night radio on my bedside stereo. A radio station that played non-mainstream music (107.3fm) had this surreal sounding track playing. It was so mysterious and beautiful I hit record on my tape player and fell asleep. The next night at the same time they were playing similar sounding music - but I never caught the name, so I just flipped the tape over and hit record again and fell asleep listening. For more than 20 years I had this one tape with the tracks and never knew the name. When I got a computer several years later I recorded them to hard disk and burnt them to CD in case I ever lost the tape. I am 35 now and for the first time, Shazam found one of the tracks names - "Hidden Refuge" by Robert Rich. I just went to spotify and scoured all the albums pre 2000 and FINALLY found the 5 tracks I have loved my whole life. They were out of order but it was these - "Steel Harmonics", "Nada", "Cloud Relapse", "Nightsky Reprise" and "Hidden Refuge". This music is so profound, like treasure to me and I have been searching my whole life for who created it. Thank you so much for your music! I did a martial arts demo in highschool with "Nightsky Reprise" playing in the background. It hypnotised the audience and put me in a trance. I will never forget it. Long time fan - Maksem

Nice video. I have not listened to your music until today and I heard it now and I really like it. I think I will get some of your albums.

Huge fan of Robert since I was in my teens, and still is. I was blasting albums such as Rainforest/Numena/Geometry from my dorm room in college with stock speakers and a homemade subwoofer to capture those lower notes.

I've discovered Robert recently by stumbling upon his album, Gaudi. It really moves me. Thank you for your work and sharing your insights here, Robert! I feel lucky that they've become "part of me" as you'd describe.

Awesome, Robert. How wonderful it is to find that a musician I respect & admire is also a really nice, together person as well. -Gary

Thanks very much for sharing your thoughts with us, Robert, and Dean for this material. Your music has resonated with me in many different ways, and I find what you are saying about the subjective experience of the listener very true. Although I am myself more inclined to experience the darker aspect of your work, and have to take it in small doses due to my natural disposition and temperament, I feel that your music opens up a space for meditation that doesn't force a single perspective, which is why I keep coming back. I find that you and Brian Eno often provide the ideal counterpoint for each other.

That's a very generous remark, thank you.

Steve Roach seriously needs someone to hold his beer on this one... or, maybe his glass of wine (?). Mr. Rich is right, though, your thoughts are very kind and generous. Cheers! Always Be Listening...

I met you some 30 years ago in Oregon, through mutual friends, around the time of Geometry, when you were playing small gigs, traveling around in a van stuffed with equipment. I was struck before we even spoke at the subtle complexities in your music, then just how damned sage you were for being young, which left an lasting impression on me when we briefly talked. It's no surprise to me you're now recognized for aesthetic contribution to music as a whole, and I do hope you're doing well and reaping all the riches of life.

I might be performing at a festival in north-west Switzerland on August 4 2017 (Aum Ritual), that's pretty close I think. :-)

Robert Rich ach! on those days I'm taking my twin boys on a week long hike through the Italian Alps, darn it to heck! August here is like August in Seattle: use it or lose it... but I'll always watch for your return. :)

Hi Nicholas - Thank you for your interest. You know, it's really hard for an artist to list their favorites, a bit like asking a parent to name their favorite child. First, you can see the whole list on my website discography (KZbin blocks web links, so just go to robertrich.com.) Some favorites include my last few - Vestiges, What We Left Behind, Filaments... and going back, adding Nest, Electric Ladder, Bestiary, Seven Veils, Fissures, Trances/Drones, Numena... is that ten yet? ;-)
