God bless this man and all those who came together for this event. A choir member all my life I was very sad to have my ears start to fail, hearing tubes inserted but I was not in a choir. I found this series and for a day, or for as many days as I need, I'm back in a beautiful choir, my life, my love too. Thank you for putting this on the KZbin, as Mr. Shaw said, "the music was written for this day".

I have encountered places and people where Shaw had been and music has always been so much better for it. An American original.

I learn something new every time I watch this. My greatest musical regret is I never had the privilege of singing for or under Robert Shaw personally . However, I have sung under four conductors that studied with Shaw, two of whom are in the chorus for this performance.

There IS such a thing as “ensemble technique”. All effective choral & instrumental music educator conductors have it.

Hi Carnegie Hall. I hope you don't mind but I asked this on your Instagram page in regards to the "Ask an Archivist Day" on the 13th. However, I am not sure if an answer was given... I was wondering in regards to these amazing rehearsal videos on Shaw. Do you think that some day, you all could release the archive full concert footage of these full concerts of Robert Shaw's Preparing a Masterpiece workshops? It would be so incredible to also have access to the full concert footage for each of these. Everyone would just love to be able to watch the concerts as well as these rehearsals. Do you all think that that could be done some time? :-) (For instance, finally being able to see Robert Shaw conduct the German Requiem, the piece he was most famous for, would be a real treat. :-) )

Robert Shaw is the gold standard toward which every choral conductor aspires, only to fall short. But, as Heifetz once told the young conductor after what Shaw thought was a particularly bad rehearsal, "You won't get it son, but it's nice to see somebody try."
