I have an insane amount of respect for Robert Townsend. He truly is Hollywood royalty. When my parents divorced and I would spend the weekends with my dad, Hollywood Shuffle on VHS was one of the many movies we bonded over. One of the greatest movies in my lifetime.

I grew up in this and Partners, in Crime. This was next level. If they had done something, independent of the system, they would have replaced the system but I know they didn’t want to be sacrificed. They did something that cannot be replicated, because that feeling, no longer exists 😢

Robert Townsend is a legend and more so with his story on how he made Hollywood Shuffle at that time. So after he made that movie was when HBO offered him a deal to make a comedy show on HBO which was amazing and just began the all stars of comedy and films that came from Robert Townsend's HBO comedy specials. Plus it is amazing how the then pornographic industry was able to help his film which many people just don't realize how expensive the editing process can become and back then the porn industry was still using film before switching to VHS.

Hollywood Shuffle is one of my favorite movies, and I haven't seen it in thirty years! I thought for sure Robert Townshend would be this huge director after that film, and he should have been. I was so naïve back then - I had know idea just how racist Hollywood was and still is.

AMAZING STORY! it goes to show that if you believe and have a conviction in what you want to do you can do it. Robert is a legend in my book. One thing I would like to know is what happened. It seemed as though blacks were making great progress for a time in hollywood. Robert, the Wayans, Spike amongst others who were do well but it seems as though there is a drought now. Maybe I'm wrong or just out of the loop as I don't really watch TV or movies these days. I did see the Vince Staples have a show on Netflix.

I don't think I've seen Townsend really on any podcast...but we can be sure Vlad will try to have him in a few months. The good news is that all these years later one of the guys who played one of the "pimps" from that iconic incident that inspired Townsend to depict it in the movie, now has a youtube channel Zoom to Thailand, brother Richie Mac, after a solid Hollywood career. But so many people got a career jump start because of this movie.
