Even to this day, Gort is a very intimidating design... especially the helmet with the raising eye shield.

In my view, The Day the Earth Stood Still is one of the top five science fiction movies. And few sci/fi creations are as iconic as Gort. I loved hearing Wise explain how they made history.

Audiences of the 50s through today still speak of the "presence" of this alien policeman. Unflappable, irresponsive, unapproachable. Period. Everything we CAN'T coerce or manipulate. Scary. Governments united and gave these units control to police their planets (recall these were the early days of our United Nations).

I have spoken to someone who actually went the first day it was playing in a theater. People knew there was some kind of robot because of the billboard and stand up advertising outside the theater. But Gort still shocked the theater, and when he started blasting the various guns, people were amazed by the effects.
