a wonderful discussion. Had no background in Hartley and now want to do more research. Opened my mind and desire for learning and looking at his works.

Please stop letting Jerry ruin every discussion on art by virtue signaling about women!

This is why I don’t read or listen to art critics (except Robert Hughes). To many words. Just too much. The work gets wrecked by the talk.

Jerry likes to portray himself at every opportunity as a anti establishment figure. A former truck driver with no education, but a champion of Artists. After following him on Instagram I found him to be quite different than he appears. I thought his comment section was a place to discuss Art, and theories about Art. However if you engage with him to discuss Art he lashes out at you in what can only be described as a petty vindictive tirade. Out of the blue unprovoked He said I will go to my grave never having made a real work of Art. Yes this is the real Jerry Saltz don't be fooled by his phony persona.

I agree with you, I think he's frankly an asshole. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one.

This could have been worth while but the endless prattle of Jerry Saltz ruined it. A few insights from Roberta Smith helped temper the experience. Far less focus on the two critics and more on the art of Marsden Hartley would have been better. Don't waste your time. Watch instead the excellent '7 Artists on the Life and Work of Marsden Hartley'.
