Why does the engine in your car shut off when you come to a stop? Error code P0102 or P0103 - VOTD

In this video I explain the main reason most cars stall, shut off, or die when you come to a stop at a red light or stop sign, then start right back up and run as long as you have your foot on the gas pedal. Most common problem is a bad MAF (mass air flow sensor).

amazing video robert. i never knew a bad MAF sensor could cause a running car to die. to my knowledge i thought it affected the ability to actually turn over a vehicle and make it run. Scotty kilmer has a video about it and the information that absorbed was ,the ability to turn over a car with a dirty MAF was incredibly hindered. By the way would love to see a video on bad freeze plugs causing coolant leaks.

My 2000 volvo s70 had the rpm dip down to 700 rpm when coming to a stop. (Its automatic) it never actually stalled but it acted like it wanted to. It got worse and worse until I decided to clean out the throttle. Sure enough it was dirty and after cleaning it the rpm never fell below 900 rpm when running, the result being dramatically smoother stops. I can finally stop at stop signs and not freak out that my car’s going to die.

Funny thing just popped up on my notifications. I was just coming back from the store and was thinking how much better old girl was running since I changed the MAF. She wasn't idling or running well at all. Before I changed it she was a slug, but coming up a steep hill just now and had plenty of power. One comment/question for you. Sometimes stalling at idle can be a bad or dirty idle air control valve right? Would this era Volvo have one? On some cars the computer just keeps the throttle plate open ever so slightly instead of having and IAC I think. Thanks again for your videos, sometimes I watch em for issues my car doesn't even have because they are to the point and well done. That and, with an older car you never know...could have something go wrong at any time. Keep the shiny side up mate!

@@RobertDIY I have also noticed she'll cough a bit on startup after a long heavy rain. Sound like any pattern failure or common problem you know of? She almost always fires right up. Did put in a new coolant temp sensor once when the problem was every day, but since no issues....just coughs and takes two or three tries after a heavy rain.

What if I changed my maf twice already also changed the throttle body in case it was dirty also changed my fuel pumps. And my car won’t stay on anymore when it did stay on it turned off on me when driving slow. The only code I’m still getting is the maf

Hi, I had the codes p0101 and p0104 and cleaned up the MAF sensor. It ran well for 2 weeks and the light is back same codes. Tried to get a new one from ford but it's discontinued, I got a different one from Napa. Now the car turn off when I stop. Very nice video. I have a relevant issue with my car. When i press the clutch to change gear or stop, sometimes the engine immediately shuts down (rpms go from 2000-3000 etc to 0). I tried to clean the map sensor and the idle valve (both of them had some dirt), but the same happened again. I don' t know which of the two is causing the problem because the ecu don' t have any error. Everything else (engine performance, idle speed etc are perfect). Do you have any idea?

Clean the throttle body. If that doesn't help, you may need to have a shop check it to see which part is failing to function properly.

Hi Robert I have a car that was stalling at red lights and stop signs and I put premium grade unleaded petrol in my tank with a bottle of octane booster in it and after doing 100kms on it I've noticed that my car is not stalling anymore. My 2013 Kia Soul is having a problem. Dealer has not found the source. I've had it tuned up, flushed the transmission, all good but not helping. It dies (once in awhile) at a red light, starts right back up, but sometimes it really is hard to get it to gain speed... no amount of trying to give it gas helps it for several seconds. Like pushing the pedal to the floor doesn't affect it. Then the car slowly builds up speed and get back up to say, 40 mph. Engine light usually stays off, or will go off. When I took it to the dealer, it did not come on. Someone told me it might be a powertrain control module. Could it be a mass air flow sensor. Any other ideas? Replacing the PCM is costly at my local dealer. THanks in adance.

Ive had this problem. A rough idle at start and difficulties staying on. No codes ever popped up so family had to take car everywhere to get it checked. Problems other mechs thought it would be where. 1.Faulty pump relay 2.Faulty gas pump 3.Map or maf sensor 4. Dirty throttle body 5. Spark from plugs 6.spark plug wiers or coils What ever the problem was. Mechs never found the problem so. We sold the car.

The code system triggers when certain limits are exceeded. Could be a few things but MAF/MAP are most likely. Did you check pending codes?

I have a 2000 S70 with ETM that struggles to idle and occasionally stalls when putting in the clutch or in neutral while the car is rolling, but when I come to a complete stop, the idle corrects itself to ~850rpm and doesn't miss a beat. It only struggles to idle when the car is actually moving. No codes or CEL.

Nobody told me it is an ETM issue. I was merely specifying that my S70 uses an electronic throttle module, not a traditional throttle body. The ETM might be malfunctioning in a different way though, because the throttle does not close quickly enough when letting off above 5,000rpm (putting in clutch pedal and letting off the throttle pedal results in the engine revving even higher, before finally going down). It doesn't do this at lower RPMs, say, 4500rpm, even at wide open throttle.

My car pulls smoothly and strongly all the way to redline at WOT, starts up after just a second of cranking when cold or warm, and idles perfectly fine as long as the car is fully stopped. It shows no symptoms of fuel starvation at all, besides idling abnormally low only when the car is rolling and effectively in neutral. I'm thinking it may be MAF or sensor related, because the car obviously corrects the behavior when it thinks the car is stationary, but it doesn't when there's forward speed to be registered.

Yes, great point for sure and I like how you say buy some maf cleaner to clean out the throttle body 20% of time it works and then you mentioned 80% of the time it’s the maf, one way to know if the maf is bad and without spending $250 on a new one, unplug, the maf then with the engine running if your car runs ruff then you have a good maf sensor, on the other hand when it’s unplugged it runs normal then it’s good.

If it's totally clogged. It gets worse and worse. Usually slows down the car on highway speeds, then looses a lot of power, then makes it drive under 25 mph... if you're not dealing with it by then, you need medication.
