ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Luna's story
The story begins in January as Luna and her mate Bomber look for somewhere to nest. This owl couple are an established pair and nested here at my home in North Yorkshire last year, when their eggs sadly failed.
Beech stump
Beech stump is an owl box I made (from an old beech stump) many years ago and is where Luna grew up. Ironically, Luna is herself a fostered owl and back in 2017 I placed her in this box with a wild tawny owl pair who raised her as their own.
Nest revamp
But since Bomber & Luna were here, I have made some renovations and the owl pair seem surprised at how it has changed. They seem to like it and it isn't long before Luna begins scraping out a hollow into the sawdust. This will do for an egg.
Fighting off competition
The newly restored nest has caught the eye of a few other birds too and Luna and Bomber have to see off barn owl Gylfie before they can settle down to making it their home.
Nesting
Tawny owls make their nests in holes in trees, and both male and females scrape out the hollows the eggs will sit in. Luna also seems to like to add her own touches. I see her picking off bits of bark and making home improvements.
Egg laying
By mid-May, Luna lays her first egg. But as she broods it a jackdaw and then a kestrel land at then entrance. Luna stays calm. Tawny owls lay eggs every two to three days… and even with disturbance from jackdaws outside… 64 hours later she’s laid a second egg. And then a third, 64 hours after that. Her clutch of three is now complete.
Incubation
Tawny owls incubate their eggs for approximately 30 days and as Luna broods the clutch Bomber drops in with regular food deliveries.
Then tragedy starts
But a month later, in spite of Luna’s constant brooding there are no signs of hatching and it becomes clear that yet again Luna's eggs have failed.
And Luna is trapped
To make matters worse, the jackdaws have returned… this time, bringing nesting material into the entrance. Within hours, the nest entrance is full of sticks. And Luna is trapped inside.
Hope
Meanwhile, I get a call about two owl chicks found on the ground at a nearby farm. They’ve fallen from their nest in a straw stack. Without warmth and food these chicks could perish in a matter of hours.
Owlets get intensive care
I have to act quickly to keep these chicks alive. There’s no choice but to rescue them. Back at base, the chicks are fed. It’s never nice to take an animal out of the wild, but this really was the only option.
A plan hatches
Luna is the ideal foster mother for these two. She's still preparing for those eggs to hatch, so she’s full of maternal hormones.
But first I have to release her
Meanwhile, in the nest, Luna is still trapped. If I don’t remove the sticks she will die. I remove the back of the nest. And with her gone, the nest can be cleared.
Luna meets her new chicks
Luna rushes in and envelopes the two chicks, brooding them instantly. It's almost as though she was expecting them.
Next time
Keep an eye on my channel to watch the chicks meet foster dad Bomber and get ready for their first flights.

I was thinking where are the eggs now, is that man takes that egs away? i guess dont do this for videos. the animal is taking care for the young its the same for example we see a puppy. but of course she know exactly thats she had 3 eggs. I like this kind of ideos but I also get little doubt because sometimes you have to let nature do there own things

I can’t believe how enormous those eggs are! It’s hard to believe that an owl of that size lays eggs so big! And on top of that, she lays *THREE* of them?? _Just bananas!_ As a woman, it seems like the equivalent of birthing three full term babies lol. _OWWW!_

finn is unbelievably gentle! a while ago, he entered a nest with chicks, and left them alone. now he finds an egg and leaves it alone. many birds would destroy eggs/kill chicks in order to attain the nest/try to push the other bird out of their territory/get food via egg/chick, but he seems so docile and forgiving. edit: rip finn, you were my favourite male owl, so sweet and curious. hopefully your babies take after you :(

@xyz7572
@xyz7572 2 жыл бұрын
@@mnomadvfx for kestrels though, it is not uncommon to see kestrels chicks starving to death surrounded by food if the mom goes missing, because of the highly specialised roles of the parents. Even if the kestrel dad are really diligent and try their best, many of the things the chicks need are not in the male kestrels’ skill set. It is the male’s role to hunt and bring in prey, but it’s the female’s role to keep the chicks warm and prepare the food and tear it into tiny pieces that the chicks can eat and feed it to them. They don’t share these duties with each other; the male is a full-time hunter and the female is a full-time baby caretaker in the nest. Without the Kestrel mom preparing the food for the little chicks, the dead carcasses of caught mice and other rodents just pile up in the nest as the Kestrel dad desperately try to bring in more food. So the baby chicks end up starving, because they of course can’t eat rodents that are almost as big as they themselves are, and their beaks are too weak to tear off bite sized chunks themselves, but the kestrel dads don’t know how to help them other than to hunt. Kestrel dads also don’t brood the chicks; that is entirely the moms’ job. This is what makes our kestrel, Mr Kes, special. He and his partner Mrs Kes were very in tune with each other, and he has watched her feed the chicks many times, so after a few failed tries to feed the chicks by dropping the prey on top of them, he started learning to prepare the food himself the way kestrel moms usually do and feed it to the babies. And he also tried brooding them a little to keep them warm, even though he had to spend most time outside the nest for hunting. This is pretty much unheard of, because male kestrels generally don’t know/understand how to do that. So our kestrel Mr Kes is very unique, and there are articles being written about him. He is a super-dad!

@E Van One more thing: Your premise that the Ukrainian military are using civilians as "human shields" is ridiculous on several levels. First, you're implying that every home, apartment, business, hospital, church, museum, farm and school that have been demolished were all harboring "human shields". That is impossible and untrue, and you know it. Also, if it were true that Ukraine used "human shields", especially in the steel plant in Mariupol, how effective could they have been? Russia shelled that plant non-stop, so your claims that civilian bodies "protected" the soldiers is utter nonsense. You're simply fond of regurgitating Putin's lies. Thank you for spewing your inane nitwittery! I'm still waiting for your "rebuttal". Hurry up! 🤭

I was amazed that Finn didn’t harm the egg. When the jackdaws kept visiting, I just hoped that Luna would scare them off, so when she was trapped there, it was such a relief that you were able to save her - what would have usually happened if no one removed the sticks, would she be able to push her way through or would she just die of starvation? I wonder if some of the birds, like Luna, recognize you. Particularly when she simply takes off through the new opening without even glancing at you or when she and Bomber check out the cameras.
@JuMiKu

Almost certainly. If they viewed him as a danger, they might have even abandoned the nest, but nothing. These are fairly intelligent birds. Not among the most intelligent, but corvids are just off the charts. You don't have to be an Einstein to recognize somebody is nice, if they keep leaving presents everywhere.
@onlytymewilltell

They certainly do. Did you see the video of the last time bomber and Luna adopted 2 rescued owlets(Eric and Ernie) on top of their own brood that had recently fledged. At that point they had 5 mouthes to feed so Robert stepped in to help. He would go out at night with prey then call out to the adult owls to come get the food to take back to the owlets. They flew right up to him. It was the most astonishing thing I've ever seen and I've watched that video COUNTLESS times! Also I'm convinced the barn owls recognize him as well and every night wait close by for him to put prey on the feeding post for them bc no sooner than he steps away here they come. 🥰
