I think "goal" and "motivation" are the most important aspect of a character, it helps create dimension onto them. There are a lot of aspects that you can add to the character such as obstacles, skills/traits, relationships, risks that affect their goal and motivation. The more you add the more dimension the character will have and the more complex the character will be.
