Roberto Alagna - "Je crois entendre encore" (Bizet)

from the opera "Les Pêcheurs de Perles". I post this video for this aria that I love. Personally, I find Alagna could have done a better job at this. He makes some breathing and words mistakes (I'm not talking about prononciation). Anyways, tell me and tell us youtubers what you think...

Je trouve que cette version est d'un équilibre rare et sublime : diction française moderne claire et compréhensible (les"r"), puissance parfois, voix mixte superbe, pianissimi, les "a" sur le "emporté dans l'espaaaaaace" par exemple, à tomber, (et les "ou" de "douuuuux rêve d'amour", hallucinants) et tout le final dans un falsetto sonnore... Que c'est bon d'entendre de l'Opéra Français chanté comme ça qui peut plaire à la fois à un spécialiste et un un parfait néophyte. BRAVO !

D'accord pour la diction (comme toujours avec Roberto), la très belle voix mixte, les pp, mais je ne trouve pas si intéressant que cela de changer le texte, pour trouver un confort vocal qu'il ne peut plus avoir (depuis longtemps) dans ce répertoire ; c'est sûr que chanter un ut piano sur an (charmant), ou un si naturel sur e (ivresse) est moins confortable ! Et puis n'oublions pas que ce qu'on fait au disque n'est pas obligatoirement réalisable de la même façon en public. Il n'empêche que je suis fan inconditionnel de Roberto, mais moins dans ce répertoire qui à mon avis, ne pouvait lui convenir que dans sa jeunesse ...

Alagna is the real deal. He is a much larger voiced tenor than usually performs this role, and yet he has lost none of the nuance or superb delicate-quality that lighter tenors negotiate much more easily on this atmospheric aria! Masterful breathing, appoggio, messa di voce, voix mixte, legato, and most importantly: a sense of direction and meaning behind the text and notes! There perhaps will never be another Alfredo Kraus, but there are still fine tenors living today to sing this aria!!

You should find his 1994 rendition. Here the voice is already too mature and used up for this aria. His heady mix is more precarious, the clarity is gone.

Though Alagna is not my favorite stage interpreter, he is much better than so, so many others. Vocally he is more than competent, his voice is lovely. He's carved out a very respectable career for himself.

This voice and this aria... I don't care about the mistakes he may have made: Art has to have an effect, that's what matters. I keep coming back to this video (many thanks for sharing), and every time I listen, I nearly stop breathing. I feel calm and happy, I feel my soul soaring. If it got any more beautiful, perhaps I couldn't bear it. Exquisite.

ladomi7962 you're right. It is more difficult to produce beautiful or meaningful art than it is to criticize. This aria was so beautifully sung. I've always appreciated Roberto Alagna. Saw him in a Great Performances production on PBS. Lovely.

I am really getting sick and tired of some so unproffessional and eval comments, from some stupid people here, especially on this fantastic artist Roberto Alagna, he is still singing wonderfully and can already look back on a extraordinary fantastic world career, but some jelous people, seem to still want to criticize him. There are so many younger singer like for example Diego Florez, who has a awful voice and sounds like a castrated goat or Jonas Kaufmann, who sounds like he would have potatoes in his throught and this two are said to be fantastic and they are said to belong to the best ones today, pardon me but what are we talking about!!!

Correction. It started with the opera houses and so called 'maestros'. The true teaching was pushed aside as the 'new knowledge' spread like a disease. In truth young aspiring singers didn't stand a chance and many ended up with careers of 10 to 15 years instead of 30 - 40. So to comment on any singer who has gone down the wrong path is to comment on falseness. The true beauty of this man's natural voice will most likely never be revealed to us and especially to himself.

Notice how he cleverly changes the score to suit the vowel, withthe OO in doux as the high note. It is written as "UH" as in ivresse, with a pp fermata. The score also says he lies down and goes to sleep, at the end, And alagna makes this a dreamy self -lullaby.Grade 96%.

The way I'd describe it is he changes the vowel to suit his voice. He clearly felt he couldn't float an "uh", as "oo" is much easier up there. Rather than seeing it as a positive, count points off for it. Gedda for me, but this is otherwise gorgeous.

Roberto nous offre un excellent compromis entre lyrique et léger pour l'interprétation ! des doux chants qui le sont même si les 2 premières phrases sont un peu basses. Un peu surpris malgré tout de la liberté qu'il prend avec le texte ( le si naturel est écrit sur ivresse par le compositeur et je n'ai pas souvenance d'une version alternative voulue par Bizet ?! ) Cela reste un joli moment de musique

Eh, oui, Alagna must work on his homogeneity and he is not accurate all the time. French singers imposed the falsetto in this piece and in my opinion Alain Vanzo sings beautifully this air. In general it is not fair or just to compare great singers because any one is unique in his performance. Instead of saying: Villazón IS better than Alagna we should say I LIKE Villazón much more than Alagna...Our tastes in relation with voices & singers are very, very, very subjective....

He sings out of tune at the beginning and he doesn't have a voice suitable for this piece. This aria demands an unusually sweet and warm voice and, in my opinion, should be sung with a shade of bliss - there is enchantement and ecstasy in Nadir's memory of a beautiful stranger.The aria is usually sung in too "elegiac" manner to me. I would favour Rolando Villazon and Placido Domingo and then Lawrence Brownlee.

I was feeling so uncomfortable, actually feeling humiliated, while I was listening to him singing. I hardly feel such a negative feelings when I listen to operas but this is exceptional. It doesn't matter whether they are famous opera singers or big name, I feel that they should not even try the arias, in publlic, they can't not even digest.

It is NOT falsetto - it is his head voice, his mezzo voice... I believe this is sung in the original key; most tenors sing a tone below this...

in order to reach the highest notes of this masterpiece he uses some ancient way of singing(either flamenco or sicilian) which he probaly inherited..lol..his legato is very short,with an improper vibrated voice for such a typical belcanto aria..

Il ne s'agit pas de critiques peu subtiles, quand on a entendu une meilleure version, c'est impossible d'aimer une autre moins bonne, qui en plus est modifiée là où ça gêne par l'interprete qui manque de confort. et donc Vanzo et Rossi au moins ont fait mieux, entre autres.

Is this a studio recording? If so, why would they not go back and retape the parts where he messed up the words? And he is singing the French 'r' as it is pronounced in speech. Me, I prefer that, but I believe the 'rule' in opera is that even with French we roll the 'r'.

C quoi ces critiques foireuses;manque de subtilité? je vous conseille d'écouter d'autres interprétations plus ennuyeuses et lourdes les unes que les autres . Ok I'll tell you - I can only tell what I know to be the truth. I suppose you could call it a best stab at making an invented voice expressive. Not his fault in truth, he started out on the wrong path like most singers did since the 40s. Then all the opera houses - including the one that hired and banned him - became infected with this disease. However, they really didn't care. One facile voice would be replaced with another younger one when the former started falling apart. It's a sham.
