He had the perfect blend between elegance and effectiveness. I would take that any day over those who "ad lib" too much and try to be too flashy. The combination of his first touch, ball control, body feints, dribbling, awareness, intelligence, passing, finishing (with both feet) and set piece skills made him a very special player. How many players in footballing history could tick all of those boxes and to such a high standard? Also, never forget his mental strength which allowed him to play until the age of 37, despite all of his crippling injuries.

im still upset baggio didnt play euro 2000, wc 2002 and euro 2004. see how chielini now, at the same age baggio was then, churning out colossal performances and baggio was deemed "passed it" by the time of those tournaments. shocking. misunderstood and mistreated. at least the brescia manager saw the value and strength in roby is giving him the freedom of italy and let him control and dictate the play. 4 great years at brescia capped off a wonderful career. divine first touch. il divin codino

I agree with you, however, in regards to 2002, Trapp had Vieri, Inzaghi, Totti, Del P, Delvecchio, Montella to choose from. All younger and not injured. That was the issue. However, Baggio was better than ALL of them IMO.

Considering that after returning from the injury, Baggio scored two or three times to say the least. Also the FIFA added the 23rd choice that year, so excluding him was probably a political decision from the federation, something related to his buddist faith (they were headed to Japan, let's not forget, that would have been a symbol) or to avoid clashes in the locker room with the never ending dualism Baggio/Del Piero. But can you imagine if Trapattoni was instead brave enough to put Totti behind Baggio and Del Piero, on the field, together? That would have been like Brazil '70 with all its 10 on the field.

I still feel like he could be fancy when he wanted to with elaborate feints; he just chose not to as he knew he could get past them more effectively using his dribbling skills and body feints, or sudden changes of direction or bursts of acceleration rather than unnecessarily flashy moves, sort of like Messi, even though he had more natural flair. But he still had plenty of flair and creativity on the ball with his chops, roulettes, step-overs, rabonas, croquetas, sombreros, dragbacks, flicks, rolls, heel moves, turns, nutmegs, etc.

There's also the touch/first-time pass he takes on Schillaci's goal against Uruguay from Zenga's goal-kick to start the play which is absolutely amazing! And his goals against Foggia, Lokomotiv Moscow, and Milan with Juve, Real Madrid with Inter, and Verona with Milan as well! And he did a similar touch to the one he did with Bologna against Juve in the first leg of the UEFA Cup final against Parma in 1995. So many great examples, that it's hard to pick and make just one compilation! Haha

Baggio is like This magical greats that the common football Fan just totally forgets. He made me fall in love with football.. He was the reason why as a young lad I was out in the garden kicking the ball high and trying to control it effortlessly.. In my opinion he's the greatest of his generation because he had the touch and finesse of the Maradonas and zidanes combined with Romario like finishing and he did it for every single club at every level with class and grace but for me what made him Special was how humble he was..
