I've put "If you're upset by X, you're not gonna like anything on my channel" on regular rotation when responding to comments. Some people seem used to EVERYTHING being made for them, and they hate that my channel has a clear focus that doesn't include them. On the other hand, my community is close, and some of my own subscribers bombard me with their personal stories of trauma and abuse that I'm not equipped to handle. I'm working on boundaries, and I needed this video. Thanks Roberto.

Use the “Anti-Fans” as fuel to propel you forward. It’s like Floyd Mayweather Jr says… If they love you they're watching, If they HATE you they're watching harder to see you FAIL. Either way there watching & it will help you as long as you have the right perspective! My best tool is responding ‘Thanks For Watching’ even if the comment is in bad faith & rude it still helps me at the end of the day with engagement so I take it with a grain of salt & keep it moving. Thanks for the poignant & much needed commentary on the topic Roberto. Positive Vibes sir! 😎

well said. Ive been making content regularly for going on three years or so now. I used to get offended by hateful comments, trolls, etc. now I just delete that stuff. I don't give those people any of my time, whatsoever. This has made a huge improvement to my quality of life as a creator. Respectful constructive criticism is encouraged. Hate, trolls, or even rude constructive criticism has no place on my channel.

Totally agree with this. I've had to deal with my fair share of terrible comments and accusations from time to time. The worst comes when someone starts stating that I somehow hate a certain group of people because of my critique on a fictional character. It gets worse when they begin to rally others who've never seen your content to begin a series of harassment. That eventually leads to the block button for sure.

I have been on KZbin for 11 years..Criticism is very important. It should be expected always and not taken as a deterrent to doing what you love. However, if someone is giving good advice in a “hostile” manner, it can get to you the most because you know they are right… so learning to take things with a grain of salt can help new creators grow. It’s not easy but it builds character.

Another acceptable response is: "Thank you for the feedback." That's it. No need for justification or anything. No need to say if you'll apply it or take it to heart. And this gives you the time to process what was said. Might be a few days later, you'll be glad of it, or you'll realise you only thought it was valid and choose to discard it. No promises either.

I've seen comments like "Hey, I suggest adding..." and keep those, as opposed to someone who might be commenting on the exact sake thing but in an insulting way, "What is this bs, at least add this for it to be less (insert swear words)." Roberto, I do take notes! Your videos (NOT "too long") are full of quotables and wisdom that go beyond having a YT channel, and are great Life Advice (#Adulting). I really appreciate your definition of valid criticism: "A specific accusation of something PROVABLE that you've done, not how they FEEL about what you've done. [It's] based in facts, logic, reason and something that is measurable, observable, and provable . . . and someone who isn't doing that . . . is not a critic, they're a hater posing as a critic." "You're not really responsible or accountable to people's feelings . . . they could just not watch your content or not participate or you know, not involve themselves with you." EXACTLY. Whenever I get an (infrequent) unkind comment, I ask: "Who IS this person?" before I reflexively react. Are they an actual person and content creator? Are they in my little genre? If I see that they don't have any content themselves, then they're a different level of trolling. The worst is having someone from my little planner-journal world commenting anonymously with a sock puppet account. Coward. Ha! If they do have content, if I see they are grieving a loss or struggling with other issues, it gives me a bit more compassion and care in how I respond. Lastly, I think a Roberto Blake journal is a FABULOUS idea! My own journal is full of notes I've taken from watching your videos. You are very quotable and could do a journal based just on those. For people who say, "Why don't you just use your phone?" there is a whole world of journalers who appreciate fine paper and the exquisite gliding of a fountain pen across the page. There is no digital substitute for that! 🙂

Really great advice. I wish KZbin would allow you to archive comments like Facebook does. Sometimes you get crap comments that aren't bad enough to delete or respond to, but you don't want to look at them every day until they slide down the list. It's easier to ignore something when you don't have to look at it.

This topic really resonates with me. It's offputting to me when the most popular comment thread under a video is all about a creator's appearance, voice, etc. and the discussion in it is disrespectful and degrading in every way imaginable. Some commenters like that will even post similar personal criticisms in multiple videos to ensure that they get the upvotes, validation, and attention they seek. Some creators probably allow this to happen because they believe that the more comments their videos get (regardless of the quality of those comments), the better their videos will perform.
@EzekJohnson2 жыл бұрын
Most of the time, those making comments that fall under the negative, destructive, unreasonable and hateful comments may sometimes have a lot going on with themselves and see the platforms as a way of venting and unleashing the "burden" in their spirits on the content creator. It is tough to deal with such people so it is is very important for every content creator to try and prepare themselves to approach such comments with the right mindset, not taking it personal but with a little bit of skill and professionalism, deal with it as the situation may demand. We, as content creators, must always do our best to choose the response option that doesn't escalate the situation nor make the content creator come across as a victim of the situation. Rather, we must learn to respond in a kind, measured, reasonable, and positive manner at all times. A response sometime However, if it feels overwhelming and draining for us, we always have the options to NOT RESPOND, BLOCK, REPORT, DELETE, HIDE. Whatever you do as a content creator, make sure you do not let anyone spoil your fun nor dampen your creative spirit. As Roberto would say, make sure you "Create something awesome today" and always. The more you soar higher, the more the critics so if you let them get to you, you will never see your dreams. Remain positive always.

This is such a great topic for content creators because unwarranted and unnecessary hate can be shocking to people just starting out. I happen to work in law enforcement outside of KZbin (14 years), so I’m somewhat conditioned to being insulted, and I deal with it pretty well, but if you’re not used to it, it can be discouraging. My best advice is to not respond when you even THINK the person is trolling. Remove the comment if necessary to stop bandwagoners and if the comment is really bad, block them because they won’t stop. They can’t help themselves. Trolls are the most miserable and pathetic people and they literally have nothing better to do with their time. I do mostly fashion videos and I occasionally get people who choose to focus in on silly things just to TRY to insult me. 90% of the time I just block them and keep it moving. They can continue to watch and obsess but they can’t comment and that’s good enough for me.

As a creator who watches many other creators I have seen both ends of the spectrum and I find people move across the spectrum with life stress. Some are too receptive and will try to fake who they are for their viewers while others will go full on defensive mode and get into fights with people who are attempting to leave constructive criticism. On a personal level, my favorite comments are people who ask difficult questions or leave critiques with positive intent. To me, there are few things more valuable than someone who enjoys my content giving me genuine feedback even if it is largely negative. The only thing I might caution against is becoming too quick to resort to blocking or banning people for differing opinions. If they are being a jerk - sure, that makes sense. I think there is a large difference though between an ad hominem and a "maybe your thoughts/actions in this video were questionable" - which isn't always a "logical" thing but one that many viewers are still going to care about. When I see creators who start to get a little larger start just shutting down any differing opinion, those are the channels that often become echo chambers where fans are too attached to the creator to see any imperfections. I have seen great open minded content creators go down the dark path of "I am right and everyone else is wrong" which I think is usually a sign that maybe the feedback is getting to them. This tends to lead to an overly coddling and supportive audience. There isn't an easy answer to this other than maybe taking a break or even maybe even therapy. It can be hard being a creator in any field and even the strongest can get bothered at times. Either way, great video.

As Roberto is talking about these resposes it makes me reflect on someting interesting. I find that MOST of the negative comments, trolls, invalid criticism, etc is done in a DRIVE BY way, meaning regardless of if you address that or not, maybe you have a follow up question on what the commenter meant, they NEVER reply again. That way it's me but not really. Only Haters I've experienced is those from the comment section of other Channels videos. And many were full on attacks using a very nasty choice of words. When ignoring didn't work. I respectfully made an attempt to say "back off". When the attacks continued I reported harassment, reported that persons channel, and hidden the user. On my channel I've only had constructive criticism and that's fine with me. Because when I looked at what people where saying it was accurate. I try to never involve emotions or take it personal. I give people a way to have freedom to speak. But when speak turns into attack that's where the line is crossed. Good video Roberto! love it.

When you play into a troll and feed them, you will often get more and more of that behavior because people will realize they can get a dramatic reaction out of you. Don't fall for it. my suggestion would be to estblish moderators that are loyal, vested followers. i use a system that involves my Patreon patrons and KZbin channel members. these are far more involved with what goes on the channel, they know what I want, how I want things to run and what to do. plus, they are far, far more likely to show up and actually mod than just a general viewer. i get how some creators may not have these types of mechanisms in play and if you do not, then identify those who comment regularly, show up to your lives regularly, etc and make them mods... after you ask and then instruct of course.

The issue is my haters don't comment. They just subscribe to my channel just to dislike EVERY video I upload & KZbin refuses to let us see who is doing it. Like just make it for us in the creators' studio so only creators see it. Disliking a video gives no feedback just another form of bullying or hating for nothing. I don't care if it helps it's annoying because it's no feedback given.

A lot of the times the people who dislike it do it for a dumb reason. That’s why they have no feedback. Dislikes still help push your video in the algorithm so your haters are actually helping you out lol

@@la6136 It's a just a few people who subbed to my channel because... I called out their fav music artist for bullying. Loool.

This is really great, in-depth advice on both the logical and emotional aspects of dealing with hate comments and criticism. Very helpful!!
