Bösendorfer 130 upright piano 1993 + comparison with grand pianos

The 130 Bosendorfer is I think the only model of upright Bosendorfer ever made; at least it's the only one we've come across in the UK. There are few Bosendorfers in the UK; this is the fourth one we've had in the last 8 years, the others being made in 1923, 1984 and 1986, so this is the yongest. All of them have been very fine pianos.
Bosendorfer and Steinway are of similar fine quaity; however there are about 50 times more Steinway uprights than Bosendorfers. We've sold over 25 of them in the same period, though only two of these have been modern ones.
We've compared this Bosendorfer upright to grand pianos as we think it might help you choose the right piano for your needs.

I grew up with one of these 130's. And in the 200's in terms of serial number. I miss that instrument. What an incredible powerhouse! I currently own a Yamaha U1...and it is a good instrument. But in no way is any Asian piano anywhere near the build, the quality, the sound...When you play this piano the whole piano VIBRATES! It is so incredible! This would be a dream come true to own this.

About pedal height, a quick fix is to put some plate under the chair and pedals, so you will be higher :) Thanks for every video Marcus.

Hello, it is the one that absolutely need to stand on its four legs, or the keybed will twist (about 0,5 mm with left front caster not touching floor ) That said a gorgeous upright piano.

That Bosendorfer sounds amazing, i enjoy your videos a lot.Specially when you explain and show internal parts of those extraordinary pianos.I use Vst and kontakt libraries a lot but in my opinion there is not a single good sampled Bosendorfer and that is a real shame because it would be great if people like me that cant afford one of those beauties had a chance to at least play a decent sampled Bosendorfer.Greetings from México!Luis no eres el único mexicano yo también me la pasó viendo videos de pianos haha, Saludos!

Thank you for posting this informative video. Yes, one has often heard it said that it's better to own a quality upright than a poor sounding grand. The Bösendorfer is a fine piano. A shame it was bought up back in the eighties ; it used to be a family firm, like many others. Actually, Steingraeber und Sohn used to make a fabulous 140 cm upright with a double escapement. The only one in the world I believe. I wonder if you ever came across one.

Thank you for your thoughts Musamor. I believe this is an important point. The best piano according to budget there is a cross over in the middle generally you get a better upright piano in a low budget, and a grand with a lower budget, with a cross over in the middle where quality is close. However, in terms of playing experience, a grand piano provides more leverage, longer keys, with the opportunity to see over the piano in social settings. Thank you for sharing a good thought. Evan

Here in the USA we have Charles Walter, still family owned and makes excellent hand crafted console uprights. Probably not bosendofur league but one of the best small pianos, also claimed to have the string length of a 6ft grand or 52" upright.

Feurich (before Wendl&Lung) have an upright piano fitted with a grand piano action.

@@mariobego8463 Well they used to build a prototype when they where branded with the "Wendl&Lung" name. Under Feurich name now, I am not sure if they still produce them but the Feurich upright made in Vienna have a special upright action that mimics the grand piano actions. Much faster response time with those special upright actions.

In my experience I just prefer the American philosophy. Which is to have a rim like a tank to reject the vibration either back into the soundboard where it will do the most good or out into the air as acoustical energy. I want a piano that sounds like something. Not all thin and transparent. A piano that when you punch it gets right back in your face. Steinway, Mason & Hamlin , and the much missed Chickering. Let me just add that a good Mason&Hamlin has that Steinway Jeckel and Hyde quality but only darker.

Thank you for your thoughts and sharing your experience of the US top quality pianos. I personally (Marcus' son Evan Roberts) live in Houston TX, my experience has been that the smaller pianos here mainly spinets are by far inferior to the European offering. And some makes to a reasonable standard. Perhaps due to the European harpsichord building heritage, European pianos and even Japanese pianos tend to be better designed especially when it comes to working on them. Evan Roberts

What comparisons would you make between a Bechstein and Bösendorfer uprights?

Imo...Bosie has a bass that cannot be equalled. The Bech doesn't have the sustain either. I have played both, side by side, I will say that the Bech did have very good action...they were very close there.

I own a 2011 130 CL, better than many grands, perfect touch, incredibly powerful, easy to play, strings at your fingertips. Bosendorfer has now launched a 120 CL, very disappointing, not to be recommended. A 2nd hand 130 is much better.

Sounds amazing, but looks very tall - I guess it's probably not designed for accompanying pianists craning their necks to see the conductor!

Good point Vaskor, in such cases for accompaniment a grand piano is preferable for seeing over! Some smaller uprights (for those who might be looking for such an instrument) such as a Knight, Welmar, or potentially Yamaha U1 model would work for seeing over. I'm confused about the agraffes vs. pressure bars. I see some fine pianos that use pressure bars in the tenor/alto/treble and some fairly inexpensive ones that use agraffes. Are there disadvantages of using agraffes in verticals? I do love the Bosendorfer 130 and agree it is one of the best uprights.

No disadvantages of using agraffes on uprights whatsoever. The agraffes will always be a big plus in any pianos whether an inexpensive one or a tier one piano.
