Robert, I learn so much from your videos I so enjoy them, thank you. I have a question for you Robert. So when doing rotational casting is there a less expensive material to use than resin? Do you have any recommendations. I would like to make the outer layer of my figuring with resin, then I would like to use a cheaper/ less expensive 😁 material for the inner/second layer of my rotational casting. Thank you Robert any recommendations would be appreciated 🙏

There are less expensive materials than resin for rotational molding. Some plasters are made to be hollow cast, as can water-extended polyester. it’s probably not a good idea to try to make a resin shell backed up by a cheaper material. you could have all kinds of adhesion or shrinkage problems. One other option might be to use a urethane foam to back up the shell of your hollow casting. This method is commonly used but it can be tricky to make work.

I’m replicating some small parts from a WWII 3” Naval Deck Gun (MK22). A few of them resemble a thimble (larger 1” diameter x 2” long). The interior wall is as smooth as the exterior. My question is how to mold a shape like that?

Robert, I need your help to make a mold! It's a chainsaw with faces on it 😂. However, It's made out of ceramic. Could you even make a mold out for ceramics?

No, I’ve never made ceramic molds. Those are a whole different universe.

Hello Mr. Tolone, I do have a question. Something I've never done myself. Can one build a sculpt out of cardstock and make a mold of said cardstock sculpt? Of course not under pressure. Something I want to attempt to do soon actually.

Silicone rubber can bond to unsealed porous surfaces like paper, cloth and wood. Test a sample of your card stock using the silicone rubber you plan to mold with. If it sticks you will need to seal the sculpt before molding. Also, if the sculpt is hollow it will be critical to make sure there are no leaks in the joints. Rubber can seep through incredibly tiny openings.

Yes, beeswax works! But there are lots of things you can seal with. Matte medium, shellac, sanding sealer, Mod Podge, etc. I’ve used lots of sealants. Often a project comes in and I don’t know what the finish is. So I always test the rubber on a small spot on the sculpture to see if they play nice together.

@@RobertTolone my only concern mostly is the weight of the rubber warping the cardstock. I tried epoxy on a small part and lets say it didn't work out. The epoxy for some reason didn't take too well to it. Tried wood glue and it worked as a sealant but wasn't hard enough to my liking. Which is why I wouldn't mold under pressure because I know it wouldn't be able to survive. Btw Thank You for the advice, its much appreciated.

Melt beeswax? On stove and heat gun?

Any heat source will do. Just make sure you don’t overheat it. Beeswax burns at relatively low temperature which is why it makes such nice candles.

No, glass melts at a much higher temperature than wax. The mold material is RTV silicone which stands for room temperature vulcanizing. That means it cures at room temperature. No heat is needed to vulcanize the rubber.
