I grew up in East Germany and I remember that we had to watch this in school. The unfortunate effect was that me and all my pals thought that this was the coolest guy ever, us being early teenagers. Telling that the only take away so many Westerners have from this interview with a war criminal is that his German is incredibly articulate, how polite he is etc etc. Of course his German is splendid, the man was born into a Prussian officer's family and he was extremely well educated! I think the most poignant take away from this interview is how little "Denazification" happened in The Bundesrepublik (which Müller ironically refers to once as "The Reich") and how many men like him were given important military and governmental positions in The BRD post-war. Far from the "banality of evil," men like Müller actively elicit jouissance from the macabre and taboo acts of violence they participate in, as much is clear in his demeanor and cadence. This might just be one of the best interviews ever filmed, as even though the documentarians clearly have a message they're trying to push they allow their subject to talk freely and candidly without ever really forcing him into a corner one way or another. So much so even that without thinking critically, many might even find Müller to be a figure vindicated of his actions.
@haydricht689911 ай бұрын
Denazification was a bad thing. Ask the Iraqis how much they enjoyed their own version of it post-Saddam. It was the systemic destruction of a beautiful country in the name of Israel and Zionism.

Such a complicated film with so many loving parts. On one hand you have the East German Press masquerading as West Germans with their own agenda and on the other hand you have the complicated figure of Müller with his own falsities and agenda that he wishes to convey.

The guys from East German press were actually from STASI. I doubt they would trust an ordinary journalist leaving the country because it was the danger that he could stay permanently in the West. My country ,Romania was communist, and every journalist, that went to Western Europe was with DSS(State Security). In this video I find that Muller is the only honest man. On the other hand the so called "journalists" ,after the fall of communism became the new rich and lived a life of luxury which their families still live. It happened all over the former Communist Block when the people of the former secret services became the new billionaires.
