I would describe Robin as "gender-fluid." He had strong elements of both masculinity and femininity. My guess would be that he was bisexual. But that is only a guess; no disrespect intended to Dwina, Molly, Claire, and Margaret (girlfriend during his teen years in Australia who probably inspired the 1966 Bee Gees' song "I Don't Know Why I Bother With Myself").

The ironic thing about the Bee Gees is that they'd never make it past the auditions in The Voice, American Idol, Britain's Got Talent, or any of those other shows today, but they are MEGA stars all around the world who sang and wrote some of the best music that ever. I Loved Robin myself, but that doesn't change the fact that he had a 9yr affair w/the housekeeper & at the time of his death that child was 7yrs old. He didn't find his soulmate, he just found someone who wouldn't leave him no matter what he did wrong.

+madd1800 I think you're right about Robin not having found his soulmate in a woman. I feel that Robin's strongest bond on earth was the one he shared with his beloved twin, Maurice. There are at least 2 videos in which you can hear Robin refer to Mo as his "'soulmate"--the video 'Who do you think you are, Robin Gibb' & American Idol's episode with Robin. I've never heard Robin speak of either Barry or Andy with the same ardor with which he spoke of his twin. A soulmate is exactly that--a mate of one's soul, regardless of the relationship (biological or not) that a soul shares with its mate on the earth plane. It's an unbreakable, unparalleled bond & one may never entirely recover from the loss of a soulmate. I believe, as some have suggested, that Maurice's passing broke Robin's heart & in the only 9 years of life he lived without Mo all he principally did, both in his life & in music, was find ways to cope, to carry on with half his heart. This beautiful songbird lost a wing the day Maurice died, in my opinion. According to Dwina, Robin often spoke wistfully of Maurice in his final weeks in hospital, saying "I wish Mo was here. I can't believe he is gone." I didn't read about Robin making references to Andy in that same period. It was Mo, Mo, Mo, as he called him. When Robin died, it was Barry who said in the press "now they're together." However, Barry's own relationship with Robin had deteriorated to the point where they were no longer even friends at the time of Robin's diagnosis, hence his remorse, guilt, regrets. But he said they more or less reconciled toward the end. You can google this interview. What caused the rift in the first place, I have no clue. But I know that at the core of their tension was love; if not, the discomfort Barry & Robin felt would have been replaced by indifference. I feel that Maurice was the heart & soul of the Bee Gees inasmuch as he was the glue holding all the brothers Gibb together. I recall Maurice saying that in the time he spent in a treatment centre for his alcoholism, Barry & Robin "didn't write a single note" in his absence. Nothing could happen without Mo's input. And about this affair with the housekeeper....I feel it makes sense in the context of Robin's loss. You say it lasted 9 years. I might be wrong but I'm assuming it began in 2003, AFTER Mo's death, ending with Robin's own death in 2012, producing a daughter (named Snow) in 2005, a 7 yr-old by 2012. Given this timeline, I'd venture to say that in crossing the line with his housekeeper, Robin was actually looking to fill, consciously or not, the gaping VOID he felt within his heart after Mo died--a void that apparently Dwina could not fill. It's just a theory, of course, but I feel it's a plausible one. I feel that the birth of Snow helped to further mitigate the devastation he felt over his loss of Mo. He played a role in bringing forth NEW life, although her very name--Snow--references something that is cold. But this addition to his family wasn't enough to stem Robin's physical decline in the ensuing years. And the thing about cancer....it usually has, as I heard, a strong emotional basis. The body just catches up with, & reflects, whatever is assailing one's spirit. According to Barry, Robin had refused all chemo treatments for his cancer. Why? People talk about his bravery in the face of his illness, but he declined to make use of all the available options to fight his cancer, if not for his own sake, then for Dwina, for his love child, for his other 3 kids, for his grandchildren. He thus rode the cancer, so to speak, on a shorter road to Maurice. Again, that's my theory, but I feel it holds weight given what Robin said on American Idol about how he has to "wake up to that [loss] every morning." Quote: "All the memorial services in the world.....don't work for me. I've got to live with it for the rest of my life. It's always there, and it does hurt, it goes on every day, there's no closure [for me]. Losing Maurice is like losing a leg, probably even more than that." According to Dwina, Robin's very last words were "I want to go home." The twins are together now & our lives are the richer for the beauty of the music they, along with Barry & Andy, shared with us all. : )

writerforlifeify, you are so right. We have many soulmates in are life time And yes they can be from all walks of life. And of both sexes. I met plenty in my day. Also I have had the privilege to have my twin flame in my life also. Which is even rarer. My parents are first cousins and also twin flames. I love the concept of numerology. And all the numbers really. I was always so fascinated by everything in the paranormal world too. Since I come from a very gifted and talented family. We are all psychic in my family. I was abuse verbally physically mentally and emotionally. By my father growing up. He was not a easy person to get along with. He still isn't. But we just don't take most of it anymore. Especially when it comes to laying his Hands on us. We all are adults now. And we won't take it. And I was also sick most of my life. I was never really healthy. And I was also in a deep depression one Time too. From my health and the verbal abuse. I am in a positive state theses days. And I always try to send out positive message out there to everyone. I just wish the best for everyone. When a person thinks positive the possibility are endless. I know. I am years in the making. And it took me years to get in this state of mind. +Judy Daher Thanks so much for appreciating all that I wrote; I really felt every word of my post. Last week, I was even inspired to write a song from what (I imagine) could represent Barry's point of view. Writing it was like riding an emotional wave that surges and crests but has no way of breaking onto any shore. It's kind of like Robin said--there is no closure, no release, no way out of the pain of losing his twin. The title of my song is 'In Our Afterglow', meaning that (I feel that) Barry feels obliged to continue living in the afterglow of their shared Light. He cannot & will never really forge an identity as a Gibb who is entirely independent of his ties to Robin & Maurice. Barry even said that he feels that he is "a cog in a machine"; he's still a part of the 3 they once were. When fans see him now on stage, they are looking at one-third of a greater entity and Barry knows that. He alone cannot be the Bee Gees, same applies to himself & Robin as a potential duo. Barry even said "we just didn't feel like we did when there were 3 of us"--when someone asked him about recording new music with Robin after 2003. Without that unique 3-part harmony that epitomizes the Bee Gees sound, 2 brothers cannot carry on in music as the Bee Gees, no 2 ways (or 3 ways!) about that. I recall that Robin announced in 2009 that he & Barry would re-form as a band & record again but I'm not aware of any new music that may have emerged after that announcement. And shortly thereafter Robin's health took a dramatic downturn. I suspect that as much as Robin wanted to be again a part of Barry's life, a deeper part of him wanted to 'go home' to Maurice, hence the rapid decline in his health, the refusal to submit to chemotherapy. He was diagnosed with cancer in Nov/11, gone by May/12, a mere 6 months later. But we know he had fallen gravely ill long before the actual diagnosis. So anyway, in my song I express that each time Barry takes the stage now, he joins hands with Robin & Maurice in spirit, remaining "to the last guiltless" of surviving them because on a deeper level, Barry did not survive them; his heart may yet beat but what we are witnessing is a man living in the afterglow of his bond with his 2 bandmates. I describe his ongoing loneliness despite the loving presence of his wife & family; Barry feels, on some level, like an empty shell, seeing neither brother when he looks either to his left or right when he performs on any stage now. It's not the same, despite the images of his brothers on the screen behind him. They should be BESIDE him & they're not. But Barry is now letting them shine IN HIM while Barry himself shines in THEIR afterglow, all the while symbolically beating on his drum, letting his blood, his time, just run...out. So that's the theme of my song. I just wish there was some way I could send it to Barry as a gift, a token of my appreciation for the incomparable beauty of the music I grew up listening to. There are online fan mail addresses but I don't know if they're current or even authentic. The body chemistry is certainly mysterious. I knew a person that smoked and drank heavily and lived to 92...but these are rare exceptions..most succumb to one problem or another.
