I think it was in Car and Driver's Top 10 list some years back, maybe Top 10 Best Driver Quotes. Chris Economaki approached AJ and said, 'AJ, I saw you walking the track this morning. What were you hoping to learn?' He then stuck the microphone in front of AJ's face. AJ replied, 'Well, Chris, I can't take a shit in the morning until I've had me a nice long walk.' RIP Robin Miller

I was a NASCAR crew member back in the late 70s. One day I was standing in line at the infield cafeteria and I sensed somebody get in line behind me and then I heard somebody say, "You mean we're standin' in line to eat this shit on a shingle?". Turned around and it was A J.......he's an intense and competitive guy but he's really a nice guy when he's relaxed, what little I was around him .

Robin...got another one that "Super Tex" did a lot back in the 60's & 70's. This one comes from a tape recording I did back in May, 1969 when I was 18. A TV special which ran after the first weekend & following Saturday Time Trials on WFBM-TV (channel 6) It was a half hour show - actually an hour long because the first half was on A.J. and the second half was on Dan Gurney. TV sportscasters Tom Carnegie & John Totten interviewed Foyt & Gurney in their work shops. Totten also interviewed briefly A.J. Sr. and Roger McCluskey. Roger was a nice guy. I met him and talked with him in Gasoline Alley back in '77 before the first (?) Miller Pit Stop Contest after Carb Trials. Anyway - One of A.J.'s famous repeating phrases he did back then was: "Well, this is actually true..." I still have the recording, transferred onto cassette tape. It was originally done with a Craig # 212 reel to reel tape recorder with the mike directly in front of my folks 10" B & W Panasonic TV. (That recorder is the one used in the CBS TV series "Mission Impossible" back in the late 1960's...remember? "Your mission, Jim, if you decided to do it..."'This recording will self destruct in 10 seconds...Good luck, Jim." Wow...what a way to destroy so many of those reliable R & R Craig tape recorders back then!) I enjoyed your A.J. Dictionary & the A.J. exhibits in the museum. In fact...all the stuff you have done has been entertainingly informative. Even way back when you wrote for the Indianapolis Star & News, you had great stuff. Thanks!

Wow! Do you perhaps have the recording posted anywhere? If not, could you share it? As a native Houstonian & a big Foyt fan, I followed him every Indy 500 via a Zenith transistor radio stuck to my ear, when ABC delayed TV for a week. I saw him race at Meyer Speedway, Grand Prix of San Antonio, and Texas World Speedway (USAC stock cars/Indy cars...) Met him personally when he came out to the Houston Police Academy to critique (& eye the girls) at an SCCA Autocross. God bless A J and God bless Robin Miller
