Chris Thomson lived in the rural Waikato district of New Zealand and wrote this in 1972. Young men in New Zealand in those times led a life of materialistic plenty but cultural emptiness - work, big car, girls, beer, tv - so they went on an OE to the British Isles that their great-grand parents migrated from. And when they returned they realized that their self identity, their soul perhaps lay somewhere in that faraway land.
