Robin is the ex guitarist for Procul Harem and went solo in early 70's I started going to concerts in 74 and this was my 2nd concert ever and I was hooked. Saw him 5 times at Cobo Hall Detroit and he sold out every time Listen to the album bridge of sighs James Dewar shows what he's got and more a perfect voice for Robin. You shouldn't listen to a live version until after the studio version. Very rare for a live version to be better than the studio version musically. And often it is different and subtle nuances are forsaken for the experience and the limitations of stage performance.

We care blessed to still have Robin with us. In his mid-70's he still tours and shares his mastery in song writing and playing. He was called the ''white Hendrix'' in his early solo beginnings and acknowledges Jimi's influence. However, as there is only one Jimi, there is only one Robin. Robert Fripp rates Robin as the greatest guitarist because ''with Robin, every note matters.'' My young son, now nearly 30, asked me one day whilst in Dad's car listening to his music ''how does he make the guitar cry Dad?'' His first three solo albums are classics; Twice Removed from Yesterday, Bridge Of Sighs and For Earth Below. From beautiful ballads like About To Begin and For Earth Below, raging rock anthems like Day Of The Eagle, Shame The Devil and soul/blues classics like Too Rolling Stoned, it don't get any better. Especially with one of the greatest rock voices EVER in James Dewar (RIP). Jimmy could sing anything and everything superbly. The rhythm section was fabulous too, James on bass and Reg Isidore and Billy Lordan on drums.

As a 58 year old re exploring these great songs, you guys really seem to get it! Keep up the great work! As for Robin Trower, he was lead guitarist for Procol Harum for their first 5 albums. By far their most famous tune is Whiter Shade of Pale, which I believe is the most played radio song in UK history. They were a great British rock band, overshadowed by one hit song. Saw him play in 2014 at House of Blues, Chicago. Like fine wine, his guitar skills have aged very well into his 70's. In certain circles, and particularly so with those who've ever played rock guitar (garage to pro) back in that day, he was very much on-par with Hendrix, Feliciano, Roy Clark, et.al. I've listened to him for 50 years, starting when I was in jr high though a tube hi-fi in a friend's basement. His trademark watery, warble-y tone comes via a univibe pedal and fairly soft overdrive pedal thru a vacuum tube Marshall amp. Also, one of the truly nice guys in the business.

Trower's all about mood and emotion, wrings such beautiful sounds from his guitar. James Dewar was the singer, and he was really a great one, one of the great blues rock vocalists of the 70's. You should hear some of the studio recordings. Too Rolling Stoned is good starter. Rock Me Baby is best version of this old blues song I've ever heard. Little Bit of Sympathy is great song, Trower still closes his shows with it, 45ish years on.

Another great selection guys! Trower is one of my all time favs! I celebrate his entire collection even the albums he’s released in the 2000s. He has consistently put out great music throughout his career! He’s one of the few artists who has been able to continually produce! I like his last 5 albums almost as much as his first 5 albums. "The Bridge of Sighs is a bridge in Venice, Italy. The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment."- Wikipedia. When you realize the context, the slow mournful vocal and pace of the song along with the wind howling, it shakes you to your core. It's said the guards would let the prisoner linger at the barred window for a short time, this was the last time you would ever is the sky and city again. I had the pleasure of seeing Robin Trower twice, once with Procol Harum (he was a founding member as was Gary Brooker) in the Fillmore East, then his solo career in the Academy Of Music, both in NYC. His meeting and jamming with Hendrix changed his world. Critics often derided him as sounding like Jimi, his reply was you tell me I sound like the greatest guitarist, I'll take that as a complement, thank you very much (this is not verbatim but is the gist of the story as was either in The Melody Maker or Rolling Stone). They played this song that night. Though I saw many concerts in NYC in the late 60s/70s/80s, this was a standout in my memory. By the way Robin has many very upbeat songs, please continue checking him out. I suggest "The Day Of The Eagle".

He composed a song to Jimi called Song for a Dreamer while still with Procol Harum. Bridge of sighs is an album to go through entirely as it's one of those perfect blends! A classic.

In case no one else put this in a comment, Robin is the name of the band as well as the name of the amazing guitarist. James Dewar was the vocalist & bassist. Reg Isidore was the original drummer. He was replaced by Bill Lordan after two studio albums. Lordan had been with Sly & The Family Stone before that. Great band.

I saw RT many times. I took my son to see him at Cains ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I had 2 extra tickets with us on the 4th row front center. I sold the tickets to 2 kids bout 18yrs old. They had never heard of him. It was priceless watching their jaws drop the whole show. Robin is such a nice and humble man. My favorite guitarist. I recommend the ENTIRE Live album from 76. It changed my life.

Robin really finessed tf out of those notes with his Uni-Vibe effect pedal, though sometimes he used another brand pedal with a similar effect. Thanks for your reaction! Please do his Live in Seattle 75' show, the entire show is killer! It cooks from beginning to the end whether the music is fast or slow. At least do Little Bit Of Sympathy, the last song of the show. Thanks for this reaction. Robin Trower is a fantastic guitarist but often overlooked. After Hendrix's death he carried on the sound only a stratocaster can make. Listen to any of the songs on the Robin Trower Live album. Some are more fast paced with even more virtuosity.

Ribin is the guitarist. He was in Procal Harem, but between their two best known songs. He joined after Whiter Shade of Pale and was solo before the live with orchestra version of Conquistador from 1972. He didn't play like this with them. Very Hendrix heavy sound here.

Robin Trower is amazing, and the Bridge of Sighs is still to this day one of the greatest rock albums ever. You need to do a deeper dive into this trio, you dismissed them way too easily. And Bill Dewars vocals are one of the things that made this Trio one of the Greatest. I appreciate seeing young people, especially young black men expand their musical horizons, but you missed it on this one. Get the album, put on your headphones and take the ride., you will see. I have had the pleasure of seeing all the great bands back in the day. I still listen to Robin Trowers works on the regular to this day.

Saw Trower Power Trio at the House of Blues in A.C. maybe 15 years ago. Upper tier, top-notch performance! I'll put Trower up against Jimmy Page any day of the week! The Bridge of Sighs (Italian: Ponte dei Sospiri, Venetian: Ponte de i Sospiri) is a bridge in Venice, Italy. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone, has windows with stone bars, passes over the Rio di Palazzo, and connects the New Prison (Prigioni Nuove) to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. It was designed by Antonio Contino, whose uncle Antonio da Ponte designed the Rialto Bridge. It was built in 1600.[1]
