Hi. Really great video thank you so much. Quick question. On the day you get paid dividends. Does the margin account take that money automatically, to pay off your margin account, or will the margin account not touch that money and you can reinvest the dividends? Or do they take the dividend automatically and now you have more money to invest from your margin account.
@youroptionsguy3444
@youroptionsguy3444 3 ай бұрын
Usually your brokerage is setup to automatically reinvest the dividens meaning you will buy more of the stock that pays you dividend thus increasing your total portfolio, but you should have the option to adjust that if you want dividens as cash and not re invest

Comprehensive. Just what I was looking for. Thanks! Question -- Say I have 100k in stocks, zero in Buying Power, and my margin maintenance is 35k. If I now borrow 5k to invest in stocks, barring a catastrophe that brings down my portfolio to below 35k, I should never get a margin call for borrowing such a small amount, right? I'd expect my portfolio value to hover around the 100k mark at any given time.

Good info, thank you. So if you have margins, you can't transfer your initial investment funds to your bank account I notice, correct? Even if the loan is lower. Using margins seem to tie up your funds for withdrawal. Interesting. Please elaborate. Thanks again. New Sub. 🙌🏾
@youroptionsguy3444
@youroptionsguy3444 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! You are able to transfer back and fourth into your account or out of your account no problem. Only when you get a margin call, you will not be able to open any new positions unless either: 1. Your account goes back up because your stocks go back up 2. You put in more money so you cover the margin maintenance amount (basically you have enough money to cover how much you're borrowing) 3. You sell some positions If you have a big enough portfolio , lets say 50k and you're only borrowing 10k You have around 40k left to borrow, you can also turn on margin spending which lets you take money from robinhood and transfer to your account , like a loan but only at 2.5% 😉

Got 2 questions and would greatly appreciate if you can answer , great video btw, and I just subbed to u, Do you get charged interest if your money you borrowed is just sitting in your buying power? 2nd question can you get out of margin at anytime u want? I hope you can answer! Thanks
@youroptionsguy3444
@youroptionsguy3444 Жыл бұрын
1. No, you get charged while using margin on settled transactions meaning you turn it on and have to buy something, turning on margin and having it sit as buying power won't be charged 2. You can get out anytime as long as u pay back what u borrowed, if you borrowed 5k and use it to buy stocks, you need to either deposit 5k or sell the stocks you bought worth 5k then you can turn off margin

I believe you answered this in your video but i just wanted to verify...So say i dont own any stocks and i place 2k into buying power, doing so would satisfy the prerequisite to "turn on Margin ". Assuming im qualified for 2k margin, that would boost my buying power to 4k right? Then i could theoretically buy 2k in stocks and move the other 2k from buying power to bank account?

Question for you. Let’s say end of trading day your portfolio is down say 100.00 off of your margin maintenance. Does RH sell any stock/option? Or does it sell off the shares bought with margin? So it does give you 3 days when called to allow deposits?

Yeah so let's say you have 10k in your portfolio and you activate margin Typically RH will do a 1 to 1 ratio meaning they let you borrow up to 10k Now let's say you already spent 10k of your own money in stocks but haven't touched any margin yet Now let's say Apple has a good dip and you want to get in with margin If Apple says it's margin requirement is 50% then you can only use 50% of margin you have available to buy or sell options So you will only have up to 5k available to use with margin on that particular stock But if you decide to buy shares Then you will allowed to use up to the full 10k RH limits you when buying options and other volatile stocks Another good way to check how much you can use is simply by setting up your order and in the review page before you execute, it will tell you how much you have available to use, it will say : Buying Power with the amount your able to use Hope this makes sense safe trading 🙏

According to RH, they look at your total portfolio value minus crypto, so if you have 22k in cash/stocks and use margin to increase above 25k you won't be flagged PDT as long as your portfolio is above 25k end of day. Also, incase you do get flagged first time there is a chance you can get it waved as long as you have a good explanation, I've been tagged PDT and asked RH support to remove it and they have.

You have 3 days then they liquidate all your positions to cover. If that's not enough you will have to deposit. Not sure how flexible they are with payments, but I believe it would be in best interest to pay it back as soon as possible. If you can't pay off your full margin with external funds, than don't borrow that amount. Be safe.

So my portfolio is 112k (all in TSLA), and I just got Robinhood Gold today. My margin maintenance is 49k, and my total margin (the amount I'm allowed to borrow) is 116k. If I borrow 60k to buy more TSLA, how will that affect my margin maintenance? What if I borrow 20k or 100k? (I'm assuming my margin maintenance must increase, right?) It seems like I would never get a margin call, even if borrow the full amount and put it all into TSLA (I know there must be some restrictions to going all in on TSLA with all my margin)... Also, I think TSLA's maintenance margin is 60% and initial margin is 68%. Does this mean that if I borrow 100k to buy TSLA stock, then I'll need a 68k portfolio value at time of purchase.. and I'll need to maintain at least 60k in my account to avoid a margin call..?
@youroptionsguy3444
@youroptionsguy3444 3 жыл бұрын
Your margin maintenance increases if the total amount of your portfolio increases either by your picks going up or you adding more money into your account, the more you borrow the more you put yourself at risk with a margin call if the total amount of your portfolio drops below the margin maintenance It seems you are in a good state with tsla right now, probably best to buy in little by little instead going in with 60k margin, I've been there and it's not fun once your stock drops lol

@@TFCTech thank you I appreciate that. I have since created a margin calculator to figure out how much I can borrow and at what tesla share price I would get called at. I'm in 110k of margin now and my death price is $540. :) Hope Tsla doesn't fall that low and hope margin reqs don't increase.

Were you able to find out what " Today's day trade limit" really is? Are there consequences if someone goes over that ?
@youroptionsguy3444
@youroptionsguy3444 Жыл бұрын
Today's day trade limit is the max you can trade within that day, I don't think it's possible for you to go over that limit because RH wont let you trade above, but this is usually for extreme traders trading multiple times a day with lots of capital, the regular retail trader doesn't encounter this

I don't understand how you actually spend the margin money. I have margin spending on I put two grand into my account but can still only use two grand so how do you know how to use or spend margin money? Please help lol
@youroptionsguy3444
@youroptionsguy3444 2 жыл бұрын
If you start with 2k and turn on margin, you should have around 4k buying power You can't use margin on crypto , keep this in mind. Once you actually start using margin, it will show up in your account under 'Margin Used' section

@youroptionsguy3444
@youroptionsguy3444 2 жыл бұрын
So if you started with 2k and used that 2k on stocks or something then you turned on margin you should have some extra spending in the buying power section, lets say you want to buy crypto with the extra money, if you try to buy crypto it won't let you since you can't use the extra margin for it Now let's say you want to buy options, usually options is higher risk so you will only have about 50% of your total margin available to use, so if you have like 1k to use in margin then you would only be able to use around $500 for options , for stocks you have to look at the margin requirement section Also I would note that using margin with a $2k portfolio is risky since if you drop below 2k you are at risk of margin call, it's best to use margin on bigger portfolio maybe like 5k or more

What will happen if one day or a period of time every stock in your portfolio drops like 90% and you get a margin call. But you have no money to cover the margin call even after you sell most of your stock. Then what will Robinhood do?
