NICE! I live in the southwestern US and these beauties are literally EVERYWHERE. Their stings are almost equivalent to that of a bark scorpion (which are also EVERYWHERE here), they are an aggressive species but are AMAZING ants to keep! They do prefer a setup with substrate but they don't neccesarily need it. They grow at about the same rate as a large camponotus species. My apologies for the lecture! I'm just so happy that you get to experience keeping them. They are my FAVORITE species! I hope your colony grows and thrives! And I hope you'll find them as enjoyable as I do! Congrats!

They aren't a messor species but they are similar to them. Their behavior is closer to an Australian meat ant than to a messor species but meat ants, messors and these pogonomyrmex ants all occupy the same environmental niche... seed eaters and seed dispersal.

Ant keeping depot are horrible sellers, they used to do ant war kits which came with workers from 2 different species which shows that they don’t care about the animals and recommend putting ants in gel nests which as any ant keeper would know are appalling
