Great tips! I really like how you explain things while you are on a location. I vlog daily and used to film way too much "B" role and decided (randomly) that 10 seconds is sufficient. I came to the same "10s rule" conclusion, only the other way round.
@robnelsonfilms8 жыл бұрын
ha! That's pretty funny. Of course it all depends on how the video will be edited but for most stuff going up online I think 10s provides enough content to work with. Glad to hear you like the video Ian. Thanks!

I used an office chair and your 'tai chi' moves for panning b-roll today! The B-roll was a great success, but my camera bugged out, so the whole interview accidently got deleted.. But I will compliment you on this video too, you had some solid points and it was very useful information!

Definitely the best broll tutorial out there--and it's just the right length too! Thanks so much guys! Love the 10-second rule, btw! There've been so many times when I'm in post editing where I took a great shot, but it's too short! If I'd just held it longer than I thought I should have, I would have had a wonderful shot to work with!

Fantastic pro tips for sure. I'll be trying out the *10 Second Rule* and see how that works. I've always struggled with B roll.

In your video you answered some of the questions I would have liked answered by my professors, but they didn't seem to have the time for. (Such as "do not be afraid of asking the person to repeat the actions once again, so you can get the same from a different angle or a close up). This is such an important thing, specially when shooting alone AND trying to be true to an astringent concept of documentary film-making. I had this misconception of what documentary film-making was, trying to "catch" the action that was spontaneously unfolding before my eyes. I used to think anything that interfered with that spontaneity and anything that was remotely "directive" of the subjects interactions ceased to be "documentary". Now I know good documentaries are hybrids and some "acting" is allowed and unavoidable in order to tell the story.

If you can, do slow motion, or timelapses, drone shots. Use camera angles like down below and effects like dolly zoom. Work with different spacial layers and included a wide shot in the beginning.

Just stumbled up on your great video on filming b-roll. Just one question how did the conversation go when you said hey Rob on the third take jump into the water and film us collecting the tag that came off a SHARK?
@robnelsonfilms7 жыл бұрын
Ha! There are plenty of sharks in those waters. We were both in it at different times filming each other. Just have to have faith in the fact that the sharks have no interest in you shooting your documentary. And if they do, make sure to get it on camera! hehe That's how we operate. Both of us also have quite a lot of shark and shark diving experience. One of my favorite things to do honestly.

NOOB QUESTION Since A roll is main/dialog roll and B roll is fill-in footage, are there C, D, etc rolls and what are their purposes
@robnelsonfilms9 жыл бұрын
+Lyonhardht - Well, if you're shooting many cameras at once, you might give them those names. But in general, they only use A and Broll as industry names.

What software do you edit your videos on? I've been using adobe premiere pro, but it has caused nothing but problems since i've downloaded it.
@robnelsonfilms6 жыл бұрын
I hear ya. I have a big love-hate relationship with Premier as well. Some things are awesome in Premiere, other times it is a major headache. I (Jonas) edit in both Premiere and Final Cut Pro. Depends a bit on the project. I find Final Cut being better for me when I do projects that have a quick turnaround.

One thing that I find annoying on broadcast TV is when they use the same b-roll for the same words more than once. It feels like I'm watching the same thing again, so if your reiterating something maybe a different bit of b-roll would help keep it interesting.
