This movie hits on multiple levels. It's a dark and sarcastic social satire. It's a brutal cyberpunk drama. It's a gory action comedy. It can make you cry for Murphy's lost humanity and laugh at Boddicker's ruthless sense of humor. I'll never forget the first time I watched Robocop.

One reason this movie is incredible is its high level satire of corporatocracies. Its criticism of the military industrial complex, corporate welfare, gentrification, heartless and psychopathic business values, commercialism, consumerism, propaganda, etc. Robocop is one of my top five favorite movies for several reasons.

35 years later after seeing this in the theater as a kid I caught on to what Bob Morton was saying to the old man right after Kenny got killed. Basically told him they put Murphy in that precint on purpose because it's a high crime area and he's a good cop so he's a good candidate for the Robocop program, hence when Murphy keeps asking for backup the dispatcher keeps telling him they're unavailable. Backup wasn't ever gonna come. They're setting him up to "die".

The Ford Taurus that the Detroit police uses in this movie may seem like a raggedy-ass car today, but when this movie was made, the model hadn't even been released yet. The production got a deal with Ford to use the Taurus in the movie and they made it to be the first public showing of this new model. Apparently it looked very futuristic for it's time.

This is the movie that made me. Came out in 1987, I was 5... I saw this in 1988 on VHS when I was 6... turned me into a cinephile. Paul Verhoeven is the greatest satirist in history. Before this I'd seen Superman, Mary Poppins... but RoboCop opened my eyes to the greatest themes that can be placed in movies. A story of the soul and humanity, a story of a what it means to be a human being. I've written thesis on this movie. Greatest sci-fi and action movie ever made... and the greatest drama too.

Hey dude, loved your reaction. If you listen to the audio commentary regarding the resuscitation scene they say they had actual doctors playing the part and giving advice to make it more real, and according to them it was possible for someone to barely survive those kinds of wounds even if they're probably going to die shortly after, so that scene is not as out there as it may seem at first.

people ask why Murphy gave his position away....it's because he's a cop and shooting a man while back turned constitutes murder. In every instance Robocop did not fire first or constitute a justifiable shooting. - Convenience store robber: Didn't fire, incapacitated him while he fled - Two rapists: 2nd surrendered, 1st shot in groin. - Hostage taker: Didn't intervene til he threatened the mayor directly. - Emil: Shot his bike, crashed, survived - Leon: Taken into custody, interrogated - Factory: killed 17 people, ALL justifiable as they shot first - Joe: Shot by murphy - Clarence: Threatened to kill him, killed in defense - Dick Jones: killed after threateneing with deadly weapon

One thing that's implied by the movie (and may have been in the original script) is that the reason Detroit is so bad is *because* of OCP. They've sabotaged infrastructure, politics and competing businesses to the point where they could buy everything cheap and make Delta City - for rich people, of course. It's made more clear in the otherwise pretty bad to mediocre (and very skippable) RoboCop 3.

20:12 Murphy is just ragdolling Clarence Boddicker at this point. Didn't even matter if Boddicker spit in his face -- Murphy was about to crush his throat and there was nothing that could stop him except his prime directives. Murphy's gun by the way is called the Auto-9. It's based on an automatic version of a Baretta pistol but with an extension to make it look more proportional to RoboCop's hand.

This is supposed to take place in Detroit but they filmed most of it in Dallas TX. I'm from Dallas and when I was a teenager we would go to different filming locations and stand behind the baracades and watch them film scenes. Pretty cool to watch!

Emil recognized Murphy because he said "Dead or alive, you are coming with me." That's his catchphrase. It's just like how Lewis recognized him from his gun-twirling. They might have blanked his memory, but there is still some of Murphy the human in RoboCop.

You'll probably enjoy Total Recall if you watch it... same director. Less overtly comical but the movie doesn't take itself too seriously. Both movies are very much social commentary 👍👍👍

Its a fun movie kids loved it in the 80s ( now it would be pg25 or something) There are some easter eggs as well as in 1987 there where no DVDs and Bob got a mesage that was recorded on a DVD. . some fun little easter eggs hidden in the movie we now all use.

There were however video CDs, and at 480p (at best) 750/850 MB was more than enough for a 2 minute video.

@@Wesker1984 true laser disks just becoming popular .but still technology just evolved to 5,25 foppie and 3.5 disks. Having something simular to a DVD or CD rom in the movie is quite an impresion. sadly it goes over the head of the younger generation as they think its normal.

Blaupunkt was a high end car stereo very popular in the 80’s when if you wanted good sound you bought a Pioneer or Blaupunkt or Jensen there were a few top end I assume they still make nice equipment

Behind the gore, violence and comedy there’s also sadness. Murphy was a man with a family now he’s a cyborg with a family he can never have. We see this more in the 2nd movie when he sits outside his wife’s house watching his son playing

Bro, you had me dying when you noticed they tested weapons in Detroit before they send it to the military. I literally lol'd. Not many people notice that. I live in Stockton, CA currently. And ish ain't great out here either. I used to make a joke that we're so bad out here, we make Detroit's paper.

Dick Jones was played by the actor Ronny Cox who also was in the movie Beverly Hills Cop as the Police Lt. of Beverly Hills. He was also good in the movie Vision Quest (1985), also starring Matthew Modine as a high school wrestler. (good movie to watch here)
