I just imagine a scene with that janitor we see complaining about the Robocops always causing a mess cleaining up Damian's remains and complaining to himself that he's having to clean up after *another* OCP executive (suggesting that he cleaned up the bodies of those executives who all died in Part 3).

@mrblonde609 I do have a bit of a soft spot for it though. I think my very first memory of the charictor was a toy island figure that was in my pre school so I think I was always aware of the charictor. But even though I'd only seen the prime directives when I was I'm high school I don't think I ever truly accepted it as "The robocop" cause I rember when I was asked if I had seen robocop and I seid no even though I saw the prime directives.

Thanks so much you guys for doing this!! I try to find the good parts in every iteration of RoboCop, 2014 being the toughest. Lol and I remember you guys interacting with the fans back in the day on RoboCop Archive or maybe it was RoboCop Central back then but it was before the premiere(s) but after the teaser trailer that had Robo visiting his grave and I expressed how much I adored that that scene or idea was finally being put to film and how much I loved Page’s performance in just that little snippet. It was the first interaction I’d ever had with someone who had anything to do with the franchise (I believe it was Julian) and the hype was real with some of us leading up to R:PD. It was a great time as a diehard Robo fan!

Watched through the whole thing. Really super fascinating to get this kind of a look into a production like this. Imagine if the original version of Prime Directives (particularly the second half, before it had to be rewritten) was adapted into a comic book. That'd be a really neat way to see that story realized.

I watched this mini series about 10 years ago, when I was in a RoboCop craze and had to watch anything I could get my hands on. I decided to give it another watch after seeing your video on it and this interview, as my memory of it has faded with time. I binged all 4 movies yesterday, and my initial thought from back then still holds up today, its still really good. Of course you have to look past all the bad plot parts, the low budget production and studio meddling, and what you are left with is a passion project made by people who actually cared and took the material seriously.

I hear that part about him emulating Cable, I think that was one of the strongest parts of the series, like his big brother he looks up to, he wants to be cable without the dishonourable part, then when he becomes Robocop that's the kind of gung-ho cop he becomes with the invulnerability and physical strength he probably admired about cable but on a massive scale. That was clever. Almost like cable would have been perfect for the Robocop program but Alex was the one who got it. I would love somebody to take a look at my robocop script concept (prototype) I only started it a couple weeks ago and I whittle away at it from time to time for fun... It's an old man Robocop story but more focussed on the possibilities of his evolution as opposed to him ending up a relic

Cool. Glad this happened for you. I remember being pretty critical of some of your earlier videos, because you went off on some odd things and seemed to have a hard time discerning well made games that achieved the goal they set out to do, yet, weren't your cup of tea, and saying they were objectively bad. But you have seemed to come a long way since then, and are able to now get the point across that while you may not enjoy it for certain reasons, doesn't necessarily mean it is bad. I honestly stopped watching for a while, but your Robocop reviews made me go back and watch a lot of stuff I missed and I can see you have clearly grown in that area of review. Clearly doing something right if stuff like this happens for you. Good job, glob....get it. Like a glob of mayo lol

@@underthemayo No problem. I always thought you articulated well, but I just felt you were articulating on the wrong things in the early days. It's been cool seing the growth and that you didn't get uptight upon getting any criticism. I also feel you have done a good job at not just being a hate channel, like many channels who fall into that trap, but give frequent enough reminders and videos taking about why we love games and movies in the first place. @@underthemayo I remeber saying something to Upper Echelon about that, and he actually started doing more videos on stuff he liked. I really remember the video that rubbed me the wrong way was your review of Alien Isolation. A game I totally get people not liking. But I felt you went about how you expresse it all wrong and missed the point on several key things. But I honestly don't think you would make the video the same way today having caught up on a lot of what you have made. I honestly woulld love to see a new video on it should you ever go back to replay it. Who knows, maybe you may have a new appreciation for it. Not that I think you will like it if you really didn't click with it, but I know I have gone back to games or even some movies years later, and actuially felt the total opposite way than I initially did when I experienced them the first time. I just feel you would at least express how you feel differently. Like, I don't really click with the souls like games. I like them, but I can never stick with them. Not becuase they are hard, like i get all hyped and the endorphin rush when I beat a boss. But for some reason, after a day or two, I play something else, intending on going back, but then a year or so passes, and it's been so long, I feel like i need to start over, and the cycle repeats. lol I like them and can see they are well made, and can criticize what is good and bad, but, ultimately, they just aren't for me personally and i have a hard time articulating exactly why.

45 minutes in and I love this interview so much! big thank you to both parties for putting this highly interesting interview together. I always thought the RC PD mini series had potential but something just was off, being the aforementioned parts 3 & 4 (cyber-bio-virus). And it's very dissatisfying (as always) when executives turn down great ideas for the sake of action?! The Robocop Mythos was always about more than just action. If they spent more money on a more psychologically emerging script like the mentioned "Murphy AI Dream" and the psychological aspect of Robo struggling with his situation altogether and thus having more resources to refine the suit and helmet-off make up, it would have made it more appealing and appreciated among the general audience and fandom. The movies weren't just action and that made it so appealing. It's just sad how many times studios just dumb down movies with great potential. The new Robocop game just proved how this inner turmoil can be touching (the gliches, Robo seekng himself as Murphy in the reflection etc). I get goosebumps. I only wish with the AI technology we might someday see alternate creations of great stories. Once again, big thank you! looking forward to listening all the rest of this great interview 🎉

To clarify what Joe O'Brien said, the movies that eventually became X-Men 1 & 2 & Watchmen are not the scripts that David Hayter wrote. The scripts he wrote were essentially First Drafts and the movies were basically Draft 20, written by multiple other people. And Watchmen specifically is a different script entirely. Hayter wrote his script in 2001. Most of his script, including the changed time period, didn't make it into the 2009 script from Alex Tse. Also, absolutely, Guyver 2 is a goofy ridiculous entertaining action flick and David Hayter is enjoyable in it

I’m an hour in and I’m loving the interview. Robocop PD is kind of like Alien 3 to me - the individual elements are great but they never quite materialize in the cohesive way that was intended. The production issues are evident in the final film, but I still have a soft spot for it. With context I can see some of the cyberpunk influences and ghosts of really good ideas than didn’t survive the process. Thank you both for giving us this insightful background on PD. It’s the only Robocop production I feel at least tries to evolve the character and keep to the original vision, even when not always succeeding.

I’ve always been with the both of you on this. Sure Robocop is cool but the character of Alex Murphy was always what was most interesting to me and it was always disappointing that aside from one scene in Robocop 2 and a couple of episodes of the series they never delved into thar again, and more importantly Murphy is far too stoic and robotic despite his evolution in the first movie. So I’ll always appreciate Prime Directives for that in spite of the jank. Hell I loved the stuff with Jimmy and his arc cause Murphy dealing with his family should be at the core of the story.

if nothing else, Prime Directives' ending with Robocop reconciling with his son and establishing that the titular directives are something that was always a part of him and not just mere programming is probably one of the strongest endings to any Robocop story ever, aside from the first movie's iconic ending.

That's one thing that's always bothered me, a LOT of people (especially frank miller) missed the point of robocop: he's presented as a superhero, but he isn't one; he's about 20% of a man's remains inside a bulky machine. He was never a superhero and that's not how he was played out in the first movie, but then 2 and 3 and the shows went way into the superhero aspect down to how peter weller moved and acted in 2. That's one thing that bummed me out in those shows that Prime Directives did way better, despite all its faults.

I always thought about that. The RoboCop 2 & 3 scripts were adapted as comic books, and I thought PD would make a really good comic. I had the chance to read the drafts and the second half were way different from the TV miniseries. I think a comic adaptation would rule, but sadly I´m not sure if Boom! I understood the necessity for the storytelling but I was a bit sad and by the Robocable's sacrificing himself. I find it interesting how commonly accepted it is now that the Other World is a parallel dimension that doesn't really interact with the real world, when in the first game, even tho it was (purposely) questionable early in the game, eventually it was made quite clear that it was real and would take over the real world if it wasn't stopped. I think this is just the result of the many sequels the series got. It wouldn't really make sense for the Other World to actually exist and having, at least partially, taken over the real world in the first game in the context of the sequels, because then questions arise. What happened to the town's inhabitants? Does the police know about this? Or anyone else for that matter? Such a thing would've been in the news pretty fast, and even if it was covered up by the government or something, surely they would've made sure to have soldiers guarding the area or something afterwards.

The remake is waaaay better than detractors say
@orinanime
@orinanime 7 ай бұрын
In regard to the remake - Here are my thoughts, as well as other reviews. LONG POST BUT I HOPE PEOPLE READ IT REVIEWS - "to give director Jose Padilha and his scriptwriters their due, the new version goes out of its way to distance itself from the original. Junking Verhoeven’s sledgehammer satire and outrageous ultraviolence in favour of real-world politics and 12A thrills, this is a slicker, shinier, admittedly inferior affair. But with a strong cast, a roaring pace and at least one genuinely unforgettable scene, it’s by no means a write-off." "Its dedication to touching on tough questions - about will and self-determination, about drone warfare and necessary force, about the power of the media over public opinion - is admirable, and the script has a certain blunt wit." The Hollywood Reporter: The film presents "civics lessons right from the start as a Fox News-like channel, anchored by slick-haired Pat Novak (Samuel L. Jackson, clearly having fun), covers the deployment of the latest robotic drones in a war-torn Tehran. Unabashedly biased, Novak extols how effectively robotic manufacturer OmniCorp's huge, menacing ED-209 droids and the man-sized EM-208s search a street for potential insurgents - that is, until some suicide bombers go on the attack and the live feed is cut when a droid kills a kid brandishing a knife. Back in the studio, expository dialogue smoothly unfurls how the U.S. Congress is resisting efforts to deploy OmniCorp robots for homeland security" "Keaton pitches the menace just right, somewhere between Steve Jobs and Dick Cheney for his alpha-shark villain." Variety says: "Just as the bleakly cynical liberalism of the original “RoboCop” was ideally suited to Verhoeven’s European perspective, so the new film benefits from a foreign helmer’s distance as it sends up American right-wing security concerns with a mostly straight face." AND "Rather than the chirpily delivered evening-news bulletin of the original, however, we’re now tuned into “The Novak Element,” a Fox News-style outlet for the heated political commentary of Pat Novak - a Rush Limbaugh-like figure played by Samuel L. Jackson, and an unreliable Greek chorus of sorts for the film. " As for the cast: "Kinnaman lacks the lithe wryness Peter Weller brought to the 1987 film, but has his own cool authority, while Keaton is a reserved, genuinely off-putting villain, leaving the maniacal business to a ripe Jackie Earle Haley as OmniCorp’s chief militarist. Best in show, handily, is Oldman, whose tender ruefulness as Norton does a good deal of the film’s emotional legwork." MY THOUGHTS - One of the first things detractors of the remake like to jump on is the rating. Like, an R Rating is somehow inherently better. The best thing about Robocop is its thematic elements. None of that gets lost with a PG13 rating. The R rating does absolutely nothing for the actual story. Gore and f-bombs and hookers doing blow don't add to the plot or character development. The things I LOVE about the original were the sharp social commentary and the man/machine story. And the new movie delivered in spades in that regard. A big part of the original RoboCop is it's graphic violence. The violence is purposefully excessive and brutal. It adds to the satire. It wouldn't be as potent with less violence. And while the over the top gore contributed to the satire, it doesn't ACTUALLY affect the story in any way. And the story, the man/machine dynamic/drama, and socio-political commentary is the reason I enjoyed BOTH movies. I love the satire and dark humor of the original. But the sequels illustrate that the satire and weirdly dark humor wasn't what made the first one so great. They leaned so heavily into the satire that the sequels became goofy comedies that lacked any of the heart and storytelling of the original. On the subject of the sequels, the 2nd movie proved that just because you have an R Rating, doesn't mean that you'll also have anything resembling mature thematic elements. The original provided commentary about the corporate privatization of American politics, consumerism, corporate greed and corruption, and society's desensitization to violence. All while delivering an excellent man/vs/machine story of Alex Murphy regaining his humanity. The remake provides commentary on American jingoism, Corporate interference with global (primarily domestic) politics, corporate greed and corruption, and police corruption. But without the satirical slant. Because the remake tells its story without the satire. I also loved the new characters in the remake. I love Michael Keaton's greedy egotistical CEO Sellars. I liked his two smarmy corporate underlings. The female second-in-command could have made for a good villain in the sequel. I would have liked to see Jennifer Ehle (the second-in-command) promoted to one of the villains and Jay Baruchel as her OmniCorp lackey. With OCP stepping in to clean up OmniCorp's mess. RoboCop could be dealing with more corporate and police corruption. Gary Oldman was good as the sympathetic Dr. Norton. Samuel L Jackson was fun as Novak. I liked Jackie Earle Haley as the military tactician. I liked that the Murphy family was more involved in the plot. I loved the new redesigned silver suit. Not the all-black redesign, just the silver. I also really liked the updated look for ED209. I enjoyed most of the action sequences in the movie (except for the blackout assault segment). His final assault on OmniCorp HQ against the Squad of ED209s was very entertaining. I especially enjoyed the early sequences showcasing the difference between Murphy's abilities when he was in control as a human-cyborg compared to when he was essentially a robotic puppet. I enjoyed how this movie focused on the split between Alex Murphy's mind and OCPs control over his mind and body via his new programming. It's especially unnerving when they reprogram his brain to make him think he's still in control while effectively turning him into another one of their drones. I liked seeing him slowly override his own programming. It was handled in a completely different way from the original, and I like them both. The movie had plenty of flaws, to be sure. I'd rate it a 7/10. I'd argue that it's the only good follow-up in the franchise. Everything after the spectacular original movie ranged from mediocre to absolutely abysmal.

I might be able to shed some light on where Paige Fletcher might have ended up. In the summer of 2005 I was working for a convenience store that was undergoing renovation. There was a gentleman from corporate there once taking inventory and I inquired to him that he looked like Paige Fletcher so much I thought he might be him. He insisted he was not 🤔😁

Prime Directives can be easily summed up as: Great in premise and concept. Failure in execution.

I gave Prime Directives a watch over the summer when I found it on Tubi. When I first saw it on the Sci-Fi Channel, I found it to be cheap looking and just disappointing. After watching it again I do appreciate some of the good ideas in the mini-series.

problem with movies is you have two hours to establish a character, put that character in a physical/moral/philosophical dilemma and resolve it. Verhovan is very good at doing that as are directors like John McTiernan. A series can do more and while I think Prime Directives wasn't great it certainly had some strong points to it.

This adult television version DOESNT capture the...atmosphere/tone of the original film. the reasons being - they seemed to see their offering as being...Wild west type stuff, with a very weak tea music score, very Spaghetti Western, in style (the music by Basil Polidoris was VERY IMPORTANT in the first film to get across awesomness) just one of the many important ingredients, that made ROBOCOP a classic. Cable has a kind of...Cow boy aura about him like some 18th century gun fighter, toting TWO guns at once, and our hero REALLY NEEDED a machine nemesis, even if it couldnt be 209, Cable wasn't enough, also it was right to include Media breaks, but they didn't seem all that funny to me, but the first...4 episodes were interesting, after that it became far fetched, & chaotic, with too much urban War fare.

No, it's not. Murphy is still a slave at the end, and yet the emphasis of the filmmaking style at that point is optimistic and Western-like. You can't call a film a particular genre based on a meta-analysis. Only the events in front of the camera determine genre. Attempts by anyone, including writers, to introduce their thoughts, feelings, and purposes into the mix are irrelevant. You said what you said and did what you did, now live with how it's perceived.

You recommended an overhyped miniseries on scifi and it was horrible, ruining your friendships and faith in the brand. We've all been there, right girls?
