Yesterday, playing Below Zero, I had an interesting experience of immersion. I was in the moonpool of my base unloading the prawn, and the lights went out, and I had the immediate knowledge "oh the power went out" and looked around my living room to realize, "right, my computer is on, that's in the game"
@blabla-rg7ky3 жыл бұрын
you mean like when I first got the game around 9 PM in the evening and said to myself that I'll check it out for 30-40 minutes and then go to sleep, but 11.30 came and I said I'd play for 1 more hour and then go to sleep, and then 4 AM came and I looked at the clock and went like "fuck!" into my chin and kept playing, sleep deprived, for 2 more hours until I looked at the clock again and saw that it was 6-ish AM and said to myself "ok, I finish building the moonpool and stock up on cured peepers and then go to sleep" and then 8,30 AM came and I had to call in sick from work so I could finally get some sleep (which I finally did), but then woke up 4-5 hours later and resumed playing until late in the evening, totally ignoring showering, taking out the trash, or any domestic duties at all until I finally beat the game 2 days later? Is this the type of "no idea how long you're playing" playing that you are talking about? :)

One of the things that I love about Subnatica and Subnatica: Below Zero is that you can never really fight the monsters. You can technically kill the leviathans, but it’s hard and takes a long time. All you have is various methods of escape.

The developers openly admit that this game was intended from the start to not be about shooting and killing everything with guns, hence, their decision to never add any particularly efficient weaponry to the game. I've heard complaints that the combat is unsatisfying, but it fits the whole game for combat to be so unsatisfying that you don't seek it out.

I didn't actually find it that scary. But I love the creepy vibe, the looming sense of dread... It perfectly captures the feeling of being completely alone on a hostile world, and running out of time. The scariest moments are when I'm exploring a cave and forget which direction my vehicle is in, and I'm scrambling desperately trying to find it before running out of time. So it captures the danger of cave diving well. Good point about how they don't reward you for killing things. (Except edible fish.) I killed the reaper outside the Aurora for the first time, and was shocked that I didn't even get an achievement, not even a sarcastic one. And then I felt bad for killing that noble beast. :D

This. Game isn't that scary when you realize how much you can get away with if you play smart and plan well. The only few times I died was because I drowned, I was stuck in a wreck, my flashlight died and didn't have spare batteries. I'd play this game in VR in a heartbeat
@a8lg6p2 жыл бұрын
@@finesseandstyle It's great in VR... Even though it's what I'd call a VR port as distinct from a proper VR game... There's a mod that fixes some problems, but... You basically have to play it with a keyboard and mouse. Or controller, which is slightly clunkier, but not bad. With Virtual Desktop, you can make your Oculus controllers emulate a gamepad, so then it's just like a gamepad that's broken in half. Which I've come to prefer, even though it's less than perfect. So there's no physical interactivity, is what I'm saying. You can't just grab stuff with your hands like in Alyx. The controls are like a normal game except your head is the mouse. Which makes the tablet/inventory etc a bit of a pain. But actually being in the reef or the cockpit of a submarine is about as cool as you might imagine. You have to have your VR legs though, or it will make you super-sick. All the zooming around and bobbing up and down... I couldn't take for ten minutes at first, but after a few weeks of other VR stuff, it doesn't bother me anymore. But if you're interested, I'd definitely recommend a Quest 2. If you want to stick it to Zuckerberg and have money to burn, by all means, get a Vive, but if 1K is a bit much to try it out... For $300... VR has barely begun to scratch the surface of its potential, but it's here, now, available to the mass market for the price of a standard gaming console, and it's pretty damn cool. Way more immersive than a flat box in front of your face, and way better for your health than sitting hunched over in a chair for hours and end. And you can play Steam VR games with it... With Virtual Desktop you don't even a cord, as long as you have decent router.

Subnautica is one of the best games of the decade. The visual effects are a bid crude, and the game has terrible optimization, but that is easily compensated by the gorgeous world design and great gameplay. The most important is the way Subnautica doesn't really explain how to survive. You just learn by experience or die. Subnautica lets you level up (or rather "down") and has a learning curve, but it does that imperceptibly. I don't really care for the story, but it motivates you to explore, nudges you to specific areas and gives the game a conclusion. The terror is the most important feature and the developers must be praised for not including weapons (the knife is a utensil) and sticking to that decision. The only thing in the whole game that really ticks me off, is that the Sea Dragon and Emperor Leviathans have been given arms.

I remember reading the Alterra guides to figure out how to survive, and figure out what the fabricator to actually do. I wasn't entirely sure where the boundary between flavor text and functional instructions was, and I think that made it more immersive. Took me a while to figure out that the fish weren't just aesthetic, they were pickable and edible items.

This video literally put how much I love survival games into words, which me myself I could not do. It’s a very satisfying genre. Subnautica, Minecraft, Far Cry Primal, and many other games are simply as perfect as a game can get in my opinion.

The fear of the unknown murky water below and ahead of you coupled with a constant unease makes this game work for me. Most of the zones do not contain any harm or danger but you think they do. Not only do you think that but you sort of feel. Might be one of the most immersive games ever created. Imagine more money and a bigger team for greater polishing.

I totally agree with you, this game is completely amazing. The very first time you meet a Reaper Leviathan it's a bit scary but you can avoid it easily. My biggest fear is to get stuck with my Cyclops at 1000 meters deep and lost every thing 👍😁
@akmal94ibrahim3 жыл бұрын
The Cyclops is so janky and huge. I only use it to transport my Prawn suit and use that instead to traverse the deep depths.

Subnautica is such a good game, I love how it starts in the safest area but forces you to go deeper and deeper into more dangerous areas, but still telling you where not to go, with the ghost leviathans of the void, or at first where the Aurora is leaking radiation, needing you to explore to make the radiation suit. I don't like to self promote, but I have been working on a pretty decent project for about a year (just building a massive tower), which is something else I love about the game, you dont just have to go deeper. Sometimes theres something fun in the mundane. I have been recording my tower, currently at 6km and posting them onto my channel. There is so much to explore, if you want to explore it all you need to build, upgrade, and be very cautious. 10/10 game in my opinion.

I've been playing video games since the 80's (so I've played a LOT of games) and subnautica is by far my favourite of all time. (I've played it through about half a dozen times) even when you know the story and what you are supposed to be doing it is just so enjoyable to play it is a masterpiece. tbh I didn't find it all that scary (but video games in general don't scare me at all, I never forget I'm just playing a game, sure I still get jump scared but the terror of the deep just wasn't there for me, I was more intrigued than scared) for me the scariest thing in subnautica is "oxygen" running out of oxygen is scarier than any monster in the game because that's something I can actually relate to the real world. drowning would suck for some reason tho I'm not really feeling below zero. there's just something about it that makes it less intriguing than the 1st game. (too much time spent on land I think) and the story is a bit meh.

@@InnerRise no idea, i;ve never played it on the switch , read some reviews of how well it runs, as far as I can see it gets pretty good reviews so it must be a decent enough port. the story will be identical on any platform , the story and game is amazing regardless of where you play it. Just to give people an idea on how petrifying the game can be, I still get my soul ripped out every time I see Leviathan even though I have used the dev console to disable aggression (I prefer to start in survival then use the Dev console to create somewhat of a Hybrid between the creative and survival modes)

I actually got wet eyed saying goodbye to my pet cuddlefish and releasing him before getting into the rocket to finish. I didn't want it to end-because I knew that first time experience couldn't ever be replicated again. The option of launching an aid packet with a message for other players was a nice finishing touch. One of the best games I've ever played. The game encourages you to explore and lets you take your time doing it to totally immerse yourself.

I'm playing it right now. Exploring and being upset by four days of radio silence. This game is so humbling without anything to guide you and that makes it so awesome. It's you and you alone. Btw. I love the sound effects when you find something like a blueprint, reminds me of Prey (one more that I LOVE). Oh and one of the crew members names is Yu. A little homage to Prey maybe?

Subnautica is so good that me, who absolutely hates survival games, loved it enough to not only play it, but fully complete it to see the ending and get all the PS trophies. If that isnt enough to call a game a masterpiece I dont know what is.
@balloneyblows2 жыл бұрын
I remember starting the game, and as someone who is afraid of what lies beneath, I was skeptical. I had no idea what to do and swam out to the destroyed ship encountering the Reaper Leviathan for the first time. I screamed and turned the game off. A couple months later back at college my roommates huddled around my computer on a snow day and we began my first real quest in Subnautica. Figuring out what to to do and where to go, and I kid you not we spent 5-6 hours straight just playing and exploring the world. I am so glad that I revisited the game because it wound up being one of my all time favorite games (I usually play competitive action games like league, WoW, RL, and fighting games so it was def out of my realm of gaming). Just finished the second game as well and hot damn they are both phenomenal games with great stories and amazing gameplay. If you're thinking about getting it just DO IT. If you're scared cause of the giant creatures... good you should be. But damn enjoy every second playing this game. I also recommend not using the wiki or any guides at first and just jumping straight into the game as I feel that's the best way to get immersed fully into the game.

Subnatica is a huge refresher in terms of survival games, it takes place in a environment most survival games make tedious and annoying, water. Plus, the game limits you in the right ways, no weapons: which make creatures more scary and dangerous without having to give them magic or some other powers. No map: makes you have to use land marks and beacons instead of just pressing a button and getting a map of the entire game.
@JHsillypantsMcGee3 жыл бұрын
My single greatest life accomplishment was a full circumnavigation of the entire subnautica map, including going through all the reaper locations around the edges, without returning to or using a base. I had to use the thermal reactor upgrade for the prawn suit to charge the power cells for the cyclops. The sonar was key to getting by the reapers, with careful observation.
@LordOfElm2 жыл бұрын
I just finished this game the other day and I'm just binging video reviews now since it was so damn good. My first reaper encounter was me noticing a chest on the ocean floor near the Aurora, and hearing something behind me while opening it. I turned around just in time to see it inches from my face as it let out an otherworldly roar and proceeded to charge into me for 80% of my health. Somehow I managed to escape by hugging the wall and swimming down and away into the kelp reefs, but that was 100% the most terrifying game experience I have ever had. If I had been using VR I would have brown pants.

The "first time" play of this game is so delicious... it's a TRUE first. The kind of first that you can only truly experience once, and all later attempts keep you in nostalgia, savoring all the best parts and keeping that first reaction fresh in your mind. Even to the extent that it's become somewhat of a genre, watching other people's "First Time Subnautica" playthroughs... and even catching seasoned players faking it for views. The only game that I enjoy so much that I'm even content to just watch someone else play it or talk about it... especially fun to introduce someone to it and watch with anticipation at every new threat they face - even if they don't know they're about to face one :D
