The reason the Great Pumpkin killed the blanket kid is because he was standing in the pentagram, everyone knows that anything in there is a sacrifice for whatever you're summoning. Heck, even Bill Patterson himself thought about the idea, but he just couldn't find the right voices for the characters how he pictured them in his head, so he cancelled any plans for an animated adaptation and just decided to leave it up for the reader's imaginations. But at least we have some fanmade animations of them. Close enough, I think.
