The KZbin algorithm kinda buried my non-Simpsons videos, but I had to make this one anyway. Robot Dreams is such a damn good film and if doing this video causes someone else to discover a new favorite, then the effort is all worth it. Neon's rollout of this film was an absolute disaster and am glad it is finally on streaming. Also, I like how I did an entire video ranking the 2023 animated films and then I didn't get to see my favorite until 2024. 😬

From the Spider-Verse trend (animated movies with blend of traditional and 3D animation like the Spider-Verse trilogy and Puss in Boots 2) to silent-film trend (animated movies that rely on the silent-film approach once again such as Robot Dreams and Flow), the animation industry shall shift one more time.

Man this movie left me bawling, also i like to point out that one of the things that test your relationship is traveling! How what is supposed joyus occasion can literally unravel and unmade your whole relationship and thats why its one of the milestones in any connection, also i interpret robot staying the beach and the mundane life of dog as ways of coping with a loss, while dog is more accustomed with loneliness and that helps him coping better with it, robot stays in the same moment where they broke up and cannot move on because he doesn't have the tools to, and that ends up destroying until Rascal out him back together.

Thank you so much for talking about Robot Dreams. When I first found out about it, I was interested in the animation most since it looked so beautiful and unique to most thing today, and as an animation student I wanted to watch that. But after I watched the movie for the first time, I cried, I cried so much. I'm still young, 18, but I've moved around so much in my life, 3 different countries. France, America, and landed in England, and have had to go through the journey Robot and Dog did so many times. The first thing I did when I went for an ice breaker day, on the first class I had for my Animation Uni course, was tell everyone in that room to watch two movies, The Thief and the Cobbler, and Robot Dreams. I will never stop saying to watch Robot Dreans.

I'm so glad you made this video. I remember being kind of lukewarm toward it - like "oh, this was a nice film and i really like the ending but i wish it didn't manipulate me with dreams so much." I think the beauty of this film is that it's very warm and inviting - a lot of children's media is formatted in this relaxed 'hangout' series of vignettes which I've always liked even as an adult. It's very casual about robot's dark situation and doesn't spend too much time lingering and wallowing while still being earnest. And of course, the obligatory goofy animals doing human things. But the target audience doesn't feel like children - would children feel anything towards the prominent twin towers imagery? The setting of 80's New York? Dog's lonely life? It feels like a sucker punch in a lot of ways and I think it speaks to the film's honesty. I admit I don't know much about the comic the book was based on but it still felt intentional on Berger's part to use the medium of animation and the audience's expectations to create something subversive without being smarmy or cynical which is quite rare. Yeah, I'll give it a rewatch.

I feel like the main conflict actually does make sense from a plot standpoint when you take into consideration Dog's character and how the world treats him. Like... of course others would be able to nonchalantly trespass on the beach - they're not losers like Dog. The law is only an obstacle for Dog because that's his lot in life, which is a very real thing. Many of the most good-intentioned people end up getting beaten down time and time again, while other unscrupulous individuals just seem to have all the luck. Life is unfair, y'know? Also, I feel like they struck a perfect balance with how far Dog went to try to save Robot. He did enough to show his unyielding determination, and it's in-character of him to concede when he's arrested. He's not some super-capable individual that'll cleverly find some amazing way to rescue his friend at all costs. Maybe Duck would have, badass she may be. But Dog isn't her. Dog's just... Dog.

@zefiewingsАй бұрын
This is a really great video Jims and I hope to be able to see this movie sometime. Your story about Dog did hit me in my own struggle to let go of a past relationship that defines me, though in my case not a positive one it's still that same feeling of seeing ghosts of it. Its very cool that this movie takes the more realistic approach that few do; you don't often stay in that first great relationship. A bad breakup can sometimes be more about life circumstances than something being wrong with either of you. Or sometimes it IS somewhat the fault of one or both parties, but that also doesn'necessarilyly make them bad but that they just weren't ready like you said. We all have to learn and grow, and unfortunately, most learning comes from the bad stuff, the mistakes. My only critique of this review is you switch to a mode where you assume we have seen the movie. And I understand that is the best-case scenario, that at the pause where you ask us to go watch it before continuing, we will do that, but don't forget your little fine print; "IF you have Hulu please go watch." It's not always easy to participate in the ask. So I found myself not as able to focus purely on your analysis because I'm also simultaneously having to go "ok I guess he left the robot at the beach for some reason? did he just get locked in? Did he forget him?", seeing Robot laying still and wondering "ok, did he get told 'wait here" and is having robot programming forcing him to follow? that doesn't seem right. Maybe his battery ran out or his legs broke?" and then way later going "Oh I see he got in the water and was too rusted to move". It just meant that I was having to anilize your video for plot instead of just to learn your feelings and point of view. Just a quick summary of "in this act robot and dog went to the beach, Robot got in the water, became so rusted he couldn't move, and dog had to leave without him" at the spot where you switch to talking about it would clean that up a bit.

This is one of my top 10 all time favorite movies hands down! The one thing I would change would be have dog be with duck at the end of the movie instead of tin. Most if not all the couples dog saw that motivated him to seek out companionship were heavily implied to be romantic pairings so it would've been foreshadowed greatly. And having the movie end with robot parting ways w/ dog after seeing them pursuing a possible romantic relationship would've worked even better w/ the themes of characters growing apart as they grow as people imo.
@underwolf6730Ай бұрын
Also, there would be something to the subtext of how robot and dog became close friends mainly due to circumstance which ultimately lead to them parting ways sadly yet abruptly, but it would've been through their experiences together that they were able to grow as individuals who were ultimately able to form more natural and stronger bonds w/ Duck and Rascal respectively. A sort of give a "man a fish, teach a man to fish" approach on teaching friendship.
@MJTRadioАй бұрын
I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it in my local arthouse theater a couple months back, but I dunno, I still struggle with that closing message. In my opinion, part of growing up is realizing that you are not the center of other people’s universes. And that that is okay, and you don’t need to be in order to maintain a friendship. Even people who are exes, literally or in the way Dog and Robot are, can maintain friendships under the right circumstances. And if ever there was a right circumstance or two people who should be emotionally mature enough to understand that, I think this would be the one. I just keep picturing another ending of this movie where Dog, Tin, Robot, and Rascal are all laughing and sharing a meal together, and then Dog and Tin excuse themselves and go home. Two pairs living separate lives, but I don’t see why they can’t be allowed to intertwine.

It's a quick read as it has no dialogue like the movie and it's really beautiful in it's own right. It really laid the groundwork for everything that's special about the movie. You mentioned that adults will resonate with the film more, but I think if you read the book you'll see how children would be able to appreciate it outside of just being cute. It was one I loved as a kid and I was blown away when I saw they were adapting it. Made seeing the finished product all that much more emotional for me as I carried my memories of these beloved characters from my childhood.

@@ryanmpfeiffer Yeah, good point on Snowman, was stretching a bit there. It's not exactly a pop culture reference specifically (the film implies it came from his snowman puzzle). But I liked the parallel of Dog's mind wanting to dream of building another new friend, like Frosty the Snowman I did end up ordering the book later and enjoyed it a lot. Some of the vignettes were changing but I was surprised how much of the framework was already laid for the film!

@@TheRealJims I think I prefer the snowman not being a dream sequence in the world of the book but I get how it works better that way in the movie. It's a very Sara Varon move to just suddenly have a character that's a snowman, but the movie is more detached from that particular style and less hand-wavey about how things work in the world of the story.

I think this is more of a matter to where popculture intertwines with classic media, if they could be called the same or not. Which is an interesting topic. I personally would say it is popculture, the concept of "the snowman" is something that is specifically crafted from a range of books and in turn, movies. The snowman is always a certain whimsical character, most often crafted by the main character to be a friend. Popculture is mostly related to modern references but at the same time, doesn't traditional media also become a modern reference just by being still relevant or remembered in modern times.

The message of this movie reminds me of the Adventure Time episode Flute Spell, the message of that episode is that relationships come and go, sometimes we stay together sometimes we part

What really threw me for a loop is just how much product placement they got into the movie. Because it was everywhere, to me it made the world more believable than most recent live action movies (Despite being a cartoon containing anthropomorphic animals and robots).

I'm glad that you made this great video! I watched Robot Dreams some months ago in the cinema and it was easily my favorite movie this year, which is wgy I recently bought it on Bluray. I recommend it to everyone I know who is into animated movies, and I'll probably just send them this video in the future because it pretty much encapsulates what I love about it.

It's impressive an independent low-budget movie from (I think) Spain could tell a story about family and friendship without an ounce of dialogue and do it so well. This is what The Wild Robot should've been...

@@jorgerincon6874 Wild Robot is fine, but it's pretty derivative. Robot Dreams is the better robot-companion movie and way more original to boot!

@MayorOfEarth79 I guess, however I think they tackle different subjects and they each do it well, wild robot it's a great parentage movie while robot dreams is more friendship/relationship. I myself enjoyed a lot the wild robot while not being a parent, and I've heard people with kids identify with the movie even more

People don’t like the ending? I think it was perfect and when robot ran to meet dog I wanted to all be a dream. I’m happy that the writers had the balls to not reunite them, as life is like that and sometimes you just need to move on. But then again, I needed that message at the time.
@TheRealJimsАй бұрын
I've heard some disappointment that the film made them wait through a long Act 2 and then not let them see each other again. Also have heard the argument that Robot should have gone down (to show he is okay) even if they say goodbye and go in their opposite directions. I tend to view the ending more symbolically, than anything

This film is actually based off of a comic. It's the same premise and general story beats but seeing what they changed for this film just works extremely well. Highly unappreciated film. Also in the comic it was a family of ducks he befriends but they migrated which I think happens with Duck.

I'm not sure how to interpret Dog's decision to buy Tin. It can be read as him moving on, but it also feels like he's "giving up". We see Dog's attempts to get out there and make real connections, and after they all fail he just goes and buys himself another robot. It's kind of sad, actually. But maybe that's the point. I think Robot fullfills the same purpose as training wheels on a bike, something temporary that's meant to help you transition into the real thing. I expected Dog to use what he learned from Robot to make a real friend (and he kind of did with Duck), but maybe he's not quite ready for that yet and that's why he's with Tin by the end.
