I noticed this video is getting suggested to more people lately. I have received quite a few negative comments, which is fine. I hope you can appreciate that I am willing to show what is going on on a modern dairy farm. These cows are actually very relaxed and content even though they are not frolicking on green pastures. Our climate and other factors makes that difficult. We do offer cows the option to go out to pasture during their dry period (2 month break from milking every year) but you would be surprised how much they choose to go inside the barn anyway. They like the shelter and the beds are comfortable. Thanks for your time!

Don't let the negative comments get to you. I worked on a dairy ranch from age 14 to 18 back in the early '80s. People have no clue about the reality of most farming, ranching, processing, and production of most of the products that they happily consume. The ranch I was on was small, ran around 400 head and all rotated from several pastures to the holding area before milking and back out to the post milking area. Anyway you structure it, there is going to be a lot of manure and a lot of work to manage it. I would have been very happy to have a robot handle some of the work. Since the path is consistent, I wonder if a rail system would be more efficient.

Your cows seem happy, thanks for taking care of them kindly! Obviously they will make a mess, but you guys show a lot of care and clearly work very hard to maintain the farm. Out of curiosity though, is the robot just scraping the filth into the slots, or is it sort of "vacuuming" it into a chamber then dumping it somewhere? Also, it would be really cool if you guys filmed and shared when a 100% clean out/sanitation happens. I imagine its a once in a while kind of clean out, but that would be so satisfying to watch.

Wouldn't it be much easier, and simpler to just mount two U-shaped pieces of steel vertically on either side of the door? That way you could slide the boards in and out easily, but the robots woulnd't be able to push it over, provided your boards fits neatly into the U.

Eric its so amazing how you can fine tune your operation and how much better your operation looks and how much money it saves in certain parts of your operation. It will help with the cows feet and the free stalls will be much clearer and everything will be much better than to have lots of manure around as the slats will be way better and less dirty and basically less hoof problems so you probably won't have to have the hoof trimmer out as much. It's amazing how much clearer the slats look after a couple times over.
