Jimmy's Food Factory, Series 1
Instant coffee, processed cheese, square sandwich ham - behind every supermarket product is a process and behind every process is a scientific breakthrough. In this entertaining and thought-provoking programme, farmer and TV personality Jimmy Doherty unpacks the science behind the food items we buy every day - from stay-fresh bread to soft scoop ice cream. Working from a makeshift science lab inside a barn, Jimmy carries out experiments to uncover the secrets of food technology. Exploding myths and revealing the little-known processes of food production, Jimmy's Food Factory will change the way you think about food.
Welcome to BBC Earth Science! Here we answer all your curious questions about science in the world around you (and further afield too). If there’s a question you have that we haven’t yet answered let us know in the comments on any of our videos and it could be answered by one of our Earth Science experts.

They had the automatic brush massager there too. I saw it in the video. Those things are tens if not thousand dollars to buy one. And all they do is make cows happy. The cows love them. It’s nice when were start treating animals a little bit better for all the work and pain they go through for us.

Ask a human female how it feels to breastfeed a baby. I have had that wonderful experience, and it's very much like a relaxing drug "high" or "buzz." Nature makes a milking mama release endorphins when we give milk to a baby, so we WANT to breastfeed. If we don't feed the baby, our breasts feel "full," kind of like your bladder when you really need to pee. The day my breastmilk dried up was a very sad day for me. I cried all day. Not only was there the "buzz" from milking, but there was also the wonderful loving feeling of bonding with my baby daughter. So no, the cow does not mind that feeling of giving milk. She is undoubtedly enjoying herself while having a nice snack at the feeder. It's why the cows walk up to the machine-- they WANT to get milked.

That’s probably what the feed is for. They would give the cow food while leading her to the machine and they probably register her tag at this time so the machine can recognize her. At that point they would calibrate the machine and then to a test milk with her. Then when she is finished and she is let go. They probably do this a couple of times of leading with food at random times to let the cows eventually understand the concept of getting in this special pen and being milk. And as long as one cow understands, the rest of the herd will eventually get it and follow her to do the same. Then you have a constant flow, even between generations.

For human females, the act of giving milk literally gives us an endorphin "high." It's a very pleasant experience. The food is undoubtedly there to distract and keep them from getting too curious about what the robots are doing. They do have other food troughs, so they could easily get food elsewhere, but they choose to get milked.

@@jetthamilton501 Lmaooo, not true at all and i can't stop laughing to it. Have you ever been on a farm like this? I don't know shit about your county, but at least in Czech republic (and I would bet that it's the same in other "richer" countries) we treat the cows as best as we can. Yes, we inseminate them, is that bad? No, sometimes even natural copulation with bull is much more dangerous than this. Their anal is big enough so we can find the cervix, but it's not like we hurt them, instead it's maybe like annoying feeling but not much more. Next up, taking the calves away from their mothers. It actually depends if it's a beef breed or a dairy cow. If it's a dairy cow, she will 99% end up with milking, otherwise it would not make any profit for the management right? Makes sense. Also we take them away, bcs it's lowering the risk of danger for her, cow could hurt her someway, even if she wouldn't want to. Next we give them frozen (like we heat it first of course) colostrum, so we make sure, she has enough imunoglobulins to be healthy and survive, and then after a week or so, we prepare her rumen for solid feed, so she can grow up correctly. Yes, we do everything, so cows can grow up and and have a nice life. AND I almost forgot, beef calves even stay with their mothers, because we don't use their milk, bcs she has enough for her calf, but we don't need it so why not. I hope you've got it somehow. like it or not, I stand for my opinion and nothing is going to change it when I know what I'm talking about. Oh sorry, one more thing... Cows aren't "engineered, we just genetically select the best animals to produce another cows and bulls. It is called selection and it's not wrong in any way. Have a nice day and I hope that at least somebody will rethink their opinion 😉

@@vaalrusEach cow's milk is individually tested for infection and safety before it is sent along to join the other milk supply. If one cow's milk shows signs of infection or another medical issue, the machine flags that cow in its database, for needing a medical exam. The cows have tags on them that the machine scans as they enter, so the computer knows which cow is giving what milk.

Larry O it is becoming more widespread as the technology becomes more affordable. More dairy farms are switching over from traditional milking systems since the increase in productivity and animal welfare out-ways the cost. There is also the pressure of finding people to work in traditional milking parlors has become more difficult and a robotic system allows one farmer to milk a greater number of cows without help

Stop trying to sell this as a 'happier cow' story... This is all about productivity, not about the welfare or enrichment of the lives of cows. I grew up on a dairy farm and know that cows will want to come in to me milked, partly because they are uncomfortable due to swelled udders that haven't been reduced naturally by a suckling calf, and partly because they will get a cake feed. Cows are intelligent animals and so will obviously want a more frequent milking and feeding but that doesn't detract from the fact their baby was stolen from them, they are living in grotty sheds or that they will be murdered as soon as their productivity drops. Milk is not cool howsoever you try and sell it BBC! #GoVegan

On any dairy farm, no matter how organic or "free-range" (i hate this term, it's the definition of doublespeak), the cows are artificially inseminated against their will (some would say raped), so that they can give birth over and over like birth machines. Cows’ horns are burned or sawed off, most often without any anaesthetic at all. Every four to five weeks, dairy farmers use a propane torch to singe the hair around cows’ sensitive udders. Through genetic manipulation and drugs, cows produce abnormally large amounts of milk. This unnatural production and the physical damage caused by milking equipment often lead to mastitis, a painful udder infection. This leads to an excessive use of antibiotics, which also puts all of OUR lives in danger Unfortunately, the image of a cute little farm with a grandma milking the cows that walk freely around as they wish is just not accurate. It's an idea spread specifically by companies that abuse animals to keep the consumers' minds at ease. Most people don't even realise that cows need to be PREGNANT to produce milk - even though when you think about it, it's entirely obvious - specifically because since we are born we are told that cows make milk. Ok sure they do, when they have babies to feed. But so do humans. Think about how perverse for a moment to consume the life-giving fluids for the offspring of another animal. Not only that, but how unethical is it to steal those offspring, murder them or underfeed them and take away their right to a mother who loves them. Would you drink human breastmilk with your coffee, or on your cereal? Would you eat cheese made from human milk? We live in a carnist society, that tells us it's ok to abuse animals because that's what their for. But the most dangerous words in any society are: "That's how we've always done it"

Casper Sanderson Depends how you think of the cow. Some people don't want to think about it. Other's would say all your doing is exploiting a large ball of cells made of dead things that's only drive is to survive and reproduce. While others see cows as intelligent animals with the capacity to feel pain and suffer physically and emotionally as we do. It all down to how relatable you find animals.

Ivar Baratheon I said some people believe not I believe to be clear. And yes some disgusting people do have the opinion that you can do those things to people. Also the difference between human balls of cells and cow balls of cells is surely we as social animals have an instinct to protect others of our own species in our immediate group (which is all other humans thanks to globalisation and compassion) because we have evolved to work together and the suffering of one individual can negatively effect the success of the collective. Again I haven't decided what I believe and I can argue from both sides and agree so who knows...

The real reasons to go vegan, the good ones, cannot depend on cultural values. They need to be based in economic realities. The planet cannot support this many people and their domesticated cattle. Go vegan because it’s less wasteful.

1. Soy milk is full of genistein and daidzein, which act like estrogen in the human body, it also uses a stupid amount of water to produce. 2. The taste, same reason I'm not going to eat a vegan or vegetarian burger or steak. In 20 or so years animal products will be grown in factories, no animals needed; you're just causing yourselves unnecessary pain for no short or long term gain. Cows still get milked and animals still get slaughtered, just what you don't buy gets put on sale or thrown away. If you actually want to help the animals, instead of opting out of the entire industry so your opinion means nothing to them, buy high quality, free range, organic, etc, animal products. This will incentivize this side of the industry to grown and thus will cause the factory farming, crueler side of the industry to diminish, which will actually be accomplishing something.

Gallus that would be great for small farms but atm this tech is just too expensive to have/maintain. I think this is not a good investment when you produce milk for solids. Would be great for cheese makers tho, the cows do look comfortable.
@HSFY2012
@HSFY2012 3 жыл бұрын
Why do they need to be done under 4 hours? The cows can get themselves milked at any time, the timeframe does not matter at all. If it is taking too long, you can just get another machine. It's very scalable.

Without getting into a meta-ethical debate about why the cattle enslavement is right or wrong, let's instead analyze the question logically. Assuming you believe it is wrong to enslave a Human but not wrong to enslave a cow, this implies there is a difference (or differences) between cattle and Humans that justifies the difference in treatment. Whatever this difference(s) that separates cattle from Humans, if this difference(s) were found in a Human would it not justify the same treatment? If not you are applyimg a double standard, that is to say you are a hypocrite.

What's your opinion on enslaving dogs and cats and breeding them to the point of having tiny paws, tiny bodies, lots of fur, eyes bigger than their brains and all the pains that come with that just so humans can call them cute? What I see here is that you people don't like to face the reality of having 7.6 BILLION humans to feed won't happen with just eating grass, that's not how nature created us, we need meat, we need fish, we need plants, we need fruit to stay healthy, we're not herbivores, your body is not made to survive on grass people!
@IndigoXYZ18
@IndigoXYZ18 6 жыл бұрын
TheFPSPower And what I see is somebody avoiding the question being being asked. Raising and caring for a pet is slavery in the same sense that raising and caring for a child is slavery. Ask yourself if you'd call raising a mentally handicapped Human with the intelligence of an animal like you would raise a pet animal slavery? Now ask yourself if you'd consider raising that Human as you would a dairy cow slavery? You should know most of our edible crops from corn to soy and the lands used to grow them go towards feeding livestock, the meat industry can only sustain itself through government subsidies while so at a minority can eat meat our bodies not only don't need but would be better off without, while the rest of the world is free to starve. Furthermore we are not natural omnivores, there is not a single nutrient in animal products that we cannot get without, and even if there were (which there isn't) we can use supplements. The longest living populations on Earth are those who eat the least meat. This unlike whatever pseudoscience you are about to cite is accepted by mainstream medical science. From cancer to heart disease, animal products are widely accepted by mainstream medical science to drastically increase ones risk for, full stop. But for the sake of argument I'll pretend that you're right (which you aren't), why can't we also treat Humans the way we do animals? What is the difference between animals and Humans that justifies the difference in treatment?
