I'm 77 now, Brazilian, retired. In 1954, age 8, living with my parents in NY, my dad took me to a movie theater on 42nd St. to see this masterpiece. I was scared out of my pants when the elder gorilla said, "I am the ruler of all Ro-Mans!" Never forgot it, and now I had the priceless chance of seeing all of it on KZbin! What a day!!

George Nader was becoming a popular new star back then, but when CONFIDENTIAL MAGAZINE got ahold of some information on ROCK HUDSON being gay, they made a deal with the studio to not publish anything if the studio would give them dirt on someone else. Hudson was breaking big and they didn't want anything to happen to his bis office potential, so they gave the magazine GEORGE NADER, who just happened to be gay and a friend of Hudson's. He wasn't a star yet, but HUDSON was. Years later, when Nader became ill, Hudson hired Mark Miller, Nader's lover as his personal secretary so they could have an income to take care of Nader. THAT'S a friend.

This one of those movies that is best watched with a lot of people. Alone it is an utter bore. The best screening I ever saw was at the Old Rialto Theatre in South Pasadena with an audience of mostly film students. It had us rolling in the aisles. This features one of Elmer Bernstein's ealiest film scores. He was grey listed by the HUAC and could only get work scoring independent films like Robot Monster and Catwomen of the Moon. He of course went on to greater things.

Wow, I didn't know he scored Catwomen of the Mon!" Another classic! At least he got paid, although probably not much. George Nader went on to better things in screen ("Away All Boats") before being outed as gay (reportedly to "take the fall" for Rock Hudson), and ironically became a fine science fiction writer.

I first saw part of this back in the mid 60s when I was visiting a neighbors house late one night. Back then these movies typically broadcast after 10:30PM. Stations also had commercials every chance they got, so the continuity was difficult to piece together. Though I didn't see more than maybe 15 minutes altogether, it left an impression (plus I was really into anything dinosaur). I saw the whole thing many years later and wondered why it was made? It wasn't very good but something felt off. The music throughout was really top notch. Why would they spend all this money on a great score only to affix it to a bad movie? Then it hit me about 25 years ago when I was watching it again. One particular event in the film gave me insight I didn't have before. For me, it turned this movie into brilliant when you consider the perspective. But I won't be doing spoilers. If asked in chat, I will.
