I found a lot of their stuff to be pretty cringe, but I will miss it, it was kinda a part of robot wars. They also seemed quite subdued, they weren't doing all that much of their tough guy act. Either they knew it was their last match or they knew it was over after their robot got destroyed. Tis sad

@@rossilfuelartist - The plunderbird boys were always fantastic sports, winning the sportsmanship award in series 2 and receiving further nominations for the award in later series; yes they liked to put on a show for the crowd, and the tough guy act was entertaining, but behind the scenes and behind the facade, they were extremely sporting and never acted like sore losers or rubbed a win in their opponents faces, and the post match interview in this episode is proof of that I feel.

The Plunderbird guys were greeat offering a lot of help in reparing and offering spare parts to other robots behind the scenes. They liked to turn up and have fun, but they did lack a lot of their energy in this war and it makes me wonder if something was going on outside of things to distract them. I really missed them later on, same with the Chromatot guys and various others.

And so Robot Wars meets its first effective vertical flywheel. always loved S3. Interesting design, powerful weapon. Well driven, and its fight against Mousetrap is one o the closest and best of the 5th wars. I remember really liking General Carnage 2 when I watched this too. Who'd have thought that a bot from the team that made the abomination known as Prometheus in Series 2 would join the then-exclusive OOTA club. Stinger and Plunderbird in this heat too. Excellent episode.

TheRoboteer they were the original in terms of flywheel. carbide etc have just taken it to a new level. its ruined it for me though,, carbide is so powerful that without a breakdown their unbeatable. itll get to the stage where itll just be flywheel robots smashing up the arena,, its gotten too advanced in terms of how powerful they are, no control needed because it just destroys whatevr it touches.

Agreed. General Carnage managed the neatest and probably most unexpected OOTA of the entire show. Mousetrap vs S3 was an excellent fight, and quite close. Those two bots might have been designed to lock together head-on. S3 vs Stinger - that could have gone either way. Both bots hard to damage, so hard to predict unless one broke down. I think Mousetrap, had it made the final, could have given Stinger a run for its money, Stinger was very hard to get a grip on, but Mousetrap might have done it with its bar.

I still miss the International Wreck Crew. RIP Plunderbird. Funny thing is that the Hippobotomus team didn't even think they were a joke entry. Good lord Team Torque didn't appear in Series 6, because their robots this series were just godawful. Why didn't they bring All Torque back anyways? Jeezus, I hated Team Torque because of that, thanks Ellie McBride. If you can look closely at 10:19, Shredder's blow nearly hit the kill switch of Mousetrap 2, which would've immobilized it. Regardless, go home Shredder, you're drunk.

Extreme 1 is what happened to Team Torque. They brought Fighting Torque, which was kind of meh and a bit of a joke in itself, but the shell got absolutely destroyed against Atomic by the house robots. In order to still take part in series 5, which was filmed at basically the same time, they stole Ellie McBride's sand pit and used that as the replacement shell and renamed it Hippobotamus. That's why she's so upset, because her dad just destroyed her sandpit on TV.

Fun fact: Ellen (the little girl crying on the Hippobotamus team) actually didn't intend on poking the Stinger team with the cardboard spear that they gave her. At 18:11, you can see her big brother, Alex, whispering something in her ear. According to the official Wikia, Alex told Ellen to poke the Stinger team with the spear. Alex is to blame, people! Not Ellen!

S3 vs Mouse Trap must be one of my favourite fights ever. Exactly what I wanted to happen happened and yet the result surprised me. So much destruction, good driving and tactical thinking. This entire heat is just excelent. Stinger gets two good match-ups to show its awesome power. The Plunderbird boys are here bringing their usual charisma in a fight that sees their final robot being totally demolished by the new powerhouse S3. I thought General Carnage would suck but the moment it flipped Guzunderbot out of the arena my entire opinion changed.

I actually remember seeing General Carnage 2 at the Sheffield Live Event back in 2001. All I remember from that show was: Fights featuring SMIDSY and General Carnage 2. Chaos 2 flipping all bar 1 barrel out of the arena. Tedbot descending from the heavens only to get killed by Sir Killalot and Sgt Bash.

It would have been the classic "speed vs. weight" question, Hypno-Disc I think had the heavier disc, S3's I'm pretty sure was slightly faster, but only marginally in both cases. HD's at its fastest was only around 900rpm, whereas S3's was over 1000, weight wise it was 20kg vs around 18kg, so fine margins really.

Stinger should have been seeded on how it finished in Series 4. Which was third because Hypnodisc was too badly damaged to carry on. So Stinger should've been seeded 3rd. But hey, what do I know? Haha!

In season 4, I felt that Mousetrap had no place making it as far as it did into the semi's. In it's first two fights, their opponents immobilized themselves. One with a battery not charged properly and the second because of a design flaw, and in it's heat final it went up against an equally lucky weaker opponent. However it's fight against S3 here totally redeemed it of that stigma, even though it lost. That was an incredibly close battle against an amazingly well designed robot. And a close call at the end. If it didn't sustain that damage in the last 10 seconds of the fight, I think it would have taken the Judge's decision.

You can tell it's a good episode when it's the smallest and most insignificant things that get to you. I fully expect mrsyko to rip into this one while functionally, the robots were probably the best balanced and matched. Why? Because the guff is so much more unnecessary. It's easy to forget why people hate the pro-kids attitude Mentorn have (see: Cherub) but Hippobotamus proves exactly why. Manufactured emotional blackmail, focusing on the poor kid who probably doesn't want to be on TV, shoving that snotty face in ours on the screen. A miserable end to the All Torque team, who I reckon were one of the first and best pushbots along with their sparring partners King B. Even Hippobotamus was quick, aggressive and nimble, and if it had been designed as a decent robot it probably could have won a judges' decision against Stinger. But no, we have to play the 'haha it's a show for kids' card. Ugh. Stinger's a robot people love to hate for the same reason as Gabriel (i.e. they hate thwackbots) but god damn listen to the NOISE it makes when it hits the arena! That's crushing, it's what happened to General Carnage just like machines before, beating on it until it just can't go on. I was never a Mousetrap fan. I was still fuming at Suicidal Tendencies when Mousetrap's episode aired with the worst seeds and an equally bullshit judges' decision regarding Sump Thing. Then in the semis, they didn't have a working robot to go up against Stinger either. But god damn if they didn't come back and come back hard. Appalling luck for Shredder - I think that they might have got that one if the fight went the distance, but fair's fair. Then the fight with S3. I get the impression the editing was hard on this one - but Mousetrap definitely pulled a Razer: i.e. 'clamp release time rules, what are those?' but that's how a control bot acts, and it could have chopped off the aerial, so I'm going to give this a pass for my hate. This time anyway. And the end of the road for Plunderbird too. Ah, taking it with very good nature at least, and what a way to go! Looked like P5 had some driving ability at the start, which was unusual for a Plunderbird machine after 2, but a very good fight, and a gracious defeat from Mike Onslow. 'You're going to need to start building machines to take those spinners' - how right you are.

Gregory Atkin I'm not 100% sure Mousetrap actually COULD release S3 when they'd clamped onto them. Looked to me at though the blade was stuck in the thin aluminium on the back of S3. Either way though, the fight was absolutely fantastic. Your assesment of everything else is spot on though.

I never really liked stinger. The bot doesn’t seem to do much damage and usually just gets by on pure luck imo.

I think Stinger does more damage than it appears to--with no external frame or body or armor, a huge percentage of their weight allowance can go straight into the tail, meaning when it does hit, it hits hard (you can usually tell the amount of energy in it just by the sound it makes when it impacts the arena floor). While it definitely doesn't do spectacular visual damage, those sorts of high-impact hits are great for knocking loose electronics; it's like the robotic equivalent of dying from internal bleeding. I know Stinger has a reputation for winning slightly questionable judges' decisions, but looking at its Season 4 run to the grand finals, it fought in 6 battles and 3 of those were knockouts--I don't think it's just coincidence that half its opponents happened to "break down" in the middle of the fight. It was an inconsistent robot for sure, and I think it reaching the grand final did involve a certain amount of luck to string together so many wins, but it certainly wasn't as ineffective of a bot as many people seem to think.

Kinetic force will do a number on the internal components. Not a tech nerd, but I am a historical weapons nerd. Bludgeons are usually intended to work around armour, by just smashing them hard enough so something underneath breaks or ruptures anyways. Plus, in the previous heat, Hypno-Disc managed to knock loose Bulldog Breed III's killswitch thingy. It didn't cut the component itself, it just smashed the casing around it hard enough for it to come loose like that. If it's heavy, and generates a lot of momentum, it'll take a lot to simply stop it, and the kinetic energy is still going to travel through any armour you have, and that's not going to be a fun time for whatever is behind the plating.
