I never forgot this scene from Robotech. This was the moment I knew this was not Tom & Jerry or G.I. Joe because characters died and they never came back. Ben Dixon gone but not forgotten.
@Banjo_Oz4 жыл бұрын
This. Robotech didn't sugar coat it. As much as I loved them, Star Blazers and Voltron came from similar origins but were much more censored (the Star Blazers episode where a kamikaze pilot's death is "undone" by reversing the footage is just laughable). Robotech (and presumably Carl) took a chance and while censoring the really brutal stuff (thirty+ shots into someone's chest, for example!) it didn't pull any "he was taken to a hospital planet" bullshit either. Roy died. Ben died. The fucking earth was *devastated*! In fact, that shot of that random soldier talking with a kid just before the bombardment from Dolza's fleet blasts them in 'Call to Arms' is the image I personally never forgot from the show. I often wonder how these shows affected the adults us kids of this era became. I have often said that every child should at least have to watch Astro Boy 1980 as part of growing up for the life lessons that show teaches!

Western media is obsessed with the idea of making people think religion doesn't exist. I was shocked that the show Iron Fist had the guts to have the hero give a buddhist prayer for a homeless man who'd overdosed. That three seconds of Max crossing himself has only become MORE meaningful for me as I've gotten older and older. He wasn't "the religious character", he was a character who happened to be Christian.

Losing Roy Fokker and Ben Dixon were amongst the closest to Rick like family to yesterdays enemies became friends like Zentradi Commander Breetai, Exedore and Miriya Sterling. @@Jtibbssax Macross actually has a full dvd release in the US with a dub that features Vic Mignogna as Hikaru and Minmay Japanese voice actress replaying her character in English. Robotech on the other hand is stuck with a shitty altered version. The altered version added some violent scenes back in and that’s a problem. as we can see with this video, the part we’re you see Ben disintegrating looks like he’s talking without moving his mouth when in the original version Macross, he’s screaming in that shot. Adding these scenes back in cause editing errors in the dub. The biggest offender about the remastered version is the altered sound mix. An 80’s anime with modern sound effects does not fit, imagine Speed Racer with loud realistic car sound effects made with today’s technology, that what this version of Robotech sounds like. They really should have released Robotech as it aired on Television, and gave Macross as the uncut version.

I loved this about Robotech. People were always just wiped out. Was not chezzy like GI Joe where u see no one get wiped out mass destruction style.

This was shocking as a kid to see. I was sad for a few days and had to think about it.

Me too. When I watched this episode when I was twelve, I cried and ran outside, bawling in front of my brother.

It was genius how the writers handled Ben's death, for those who watched the show, while he was likeable, it was obvious he wasn't as skilled of a pilot as Rick, Max or Roy, he was bailed out by them more than a few times, if he would've died first, nobody would've been surprised. But Roy died first unexpectedly and not in his plane but on his girlfriend's couch, and then while you're still reeling from that Ben dies, so it's like a stomach punch right after you've been slapped in the face.

Why Ben? Why did you switch to guardian mode and not hit the after burners? Why? I was depressed about this for a week as a kid.

That wouldn't have occurred if Khyron the Backstabber had not attacked. It wasn't the fault of the SDF1 crew that the barrier overload occurred.Khyron kept firing and it caused the barrier system to overload.He's the one at fault.

@@r_d_l_m that macross is a legend does not make robotech "so overrated". Both series are excellents.
