The fridge was up in Darwin. Darwin is a pretty tropical place, wet in summer, dry in winter. It was 30+ degrees when they played. That last, extra 50m penalty was for "impeding the run of the player taking the penalty". It's one of a couple of time wasting penalties

When a player takes a mark, they can only move back in a straight line behind the point where the mark was taken, the only time they can move off the line is when they're carrying momentum from taking the mark so when you're running to take a mark you're allowed the extra steps to slow yourself down. If it is obvious that the player isn't going to slow down than it's play on, or in the case of Nick Holman at 11:57, a player takes the mark and steps off the line is also play on. Holman took his mark and stepped forward (in way that was clearly not caused by momentum) rather than back, therefor he deliberately stepped off his line, which is play on.

There’s an extra layer to the one at 9:50 One of the commentators is Nick Riewoldt who had basically that same thing happen to him in the 2010 grand final and he’s never lived it down. So when they’re saying “dare I say it!” theyre referring to the iconic call from Dennis Cometti from that grand final “he snuck up on him like a librarian!” which they feel like they shouldn’t say with Nick himself in the box but they say it anyway

Playing on is if you step off the ‘invisible’ line behind the mark point on the ground. Either sideways or ahead of the mark.

There’s some real comical ones here and real coach killers too. Very good point re the play on rule. The defending player has to wait for the play on call generally (naturally) but in some circumstances there’s nothing to lose generally by tackling in the goal square. If it’s going to be a formality,they may as well tackle (if they probably played on). Most of the time,the right decision is made by the umpire. Regarding the fridge,many games early in the season are played in hot conditions. 37C Max’s but particularly oppressive are games played in the tropics. The far north. Cairns and particular Darwin. High humidity and temperatures even at night. In summer and early autumn there,it doesn’t fall below 28C. Even with summer training,it’s a real test for players in these conditions. Not unusual in games for players to be sick in this weather. They literally nearly bust a boiler on ground and are thoroughly exhausted coming off the ground so the quicker their core temperature can be brought down the better especially for on ballers like Martin.

FYI the ‘falcon’ people are referring to comes from rugby league. Mario Fenech - a Maltese born player (nickname Maltese Falcon) in the 1980s received one of the most ignominious hits in the head by a footy ever - it’s been known as a falcon ever since. Original footage (very short) here for your amusement kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6qYpKGAdpqtqpo

9:14 Welcome to one of Lord Fagan's Sermons also known as the half time Fage Spray. Also if you were wondering what was going on at the end there there's a protected area when you take a free kick. The player with the ball is basically running into the back of the Richmond player to try and milk another 50 metre penalty which works. It's similar to the beautiful game when there's a free kick and the defender won't step back so the attacker just kicks the ball into him hoping he'll get booked for it.

When you win the toss you point to the side you want. Well both captains pointed. Lol 😂 We call ball in the face a falcon. Also if it didn't happen to you... It's funny. The fridge dusty went into was up north. It was really hot compared to temps they are used to playing in. Played on determined by umpire. Normally a hand up to show they want to stop to take shot. People miss because they are human beings. And we aren't robots.

The spot on the ground where the marking player takes the mark , is also called the " Mark " ( follow ? ) .When he steps forward of that " Mark " ( or perpendicular ) It is " Play On " ( as soon as the Umpire calls it ) He'll allow you a step or two to stop if you're running but it's all about intent . Umpires call , always .

Those balls are heavy, and the launch off the boot with impressive speed, a guy in my town was hit in the face roughly 10metres after someone kicked it and he lost the vision in one of his eyes and was on life support for a few days. Most of the time it's a bad headache and a sore nose but it's no joke to be hit in the face by one.

The "goal kicking" in modern AFL is appalling , old school full fowards go off their nut about it . The main problem being is clubs recruit athletes mainly these days not football players

In fairness to todays footballers , Daicos invented the dribble kick and no one else could do it . It made him an absolute star , but now there are dozens of todays players who can reliably do it. Then there is the hook kick from tight angles and the checkside kick and their ability to kick either foot well, not just when you absolutely had no choice . Straight set shots is another matter, that comes down to whats going on in your head more than anything.

The first one is just from some random game. Before the game the captains always go to the middle where they meet with the umpire who tosses a coin to determine which direction the teams will kick in the first quarter. Normally the away captain makes the call and then the captain that wins the toss points to the direction they want to kick to, then they return to their team huddle and give their final team address In this one, Nat Fyfe wins the toss for Freo and point to one end, but the other captain also points which you can see visibly confuses Fyfe. It’s just a silly little mind game

The question about playing on, it's about the player's intent. You can clearly see in that clip that the player's intent is to play on immediately and kick the goal. If you watch enough football it becomes obvious. Having said that, as already mentioned it is also about moving "off the line" but only AFTER the player has marked the ball, has shown NO INITIAL INTENT to play on, and has moved back behind the mark and settled to take the kick.
@____Riley____
@____Riley____ 3 жыл бұрын
Even if the player has kept moving a bit after the mark because of their momentum, the unpire will try and judge whether they've played on by if they're decelerating or accelerating after they've marked it.

You are correct . A player like Richmonds Tom Lynch is payed up to $800,00 a year to kick goals. It can cost a coach his job when they miss kicks like that . You should see the Chief's ,Jason Dunstal, reactions to stupid missed dribble goals . He just about explodes.

What’s bad about these kicks is that their missing them whilst using the easier kicking method, rugby boys have to let the ball hit the floor before a drop goal can be counted whilst these boy are just kicking them from their hands

The Charlie Cameron miss (the first one) is something I dislike these days. For some reason, players now prefer to kick for goal around the corner (I suspect it's because they practice more banana than drop punt). Instead of kicking what should have been an easy straight kick, he attempts to put himself on an angle and kick around the corner - and misses. Seems to happen a surprising amount in the modern game. Was gonna say "same with the GWS one" - but was too busy PMSL at your comment re Toby the Flog. Shuey's kick to me looked like he changed his mind which foot he was kicking with and his brain didn't respond on time (using the "non-preferred" foot on the run can be surprisingly challenging even when you practice it a lot). I didn't know they used a fridge, but I know they play a couple games in the NT (where it tends to be warm and humid - even through winter), so you used to see the interchange bench in ice vests. Port do things different, because they're special - sort of doesn't surprise me they'd have a drummer for the team song. Basically if a player keeps moving forward they're assumed to have played on or taken the advantage (technically the 2 are subtly different - play on would literally be the player awarded the free continuing, whereas advantage can be that a team mate has ended up with the ball, but play continues without returning it to the player awarded the free, for example if someone is pushed in the back as their disposing of the ball, a free may be awarded but if the receiving player continues play then advantage is awarded) The Richmond vs Port one (that starts with a 50m against Dusty) is a relatively new interpretation (I think since about 2018 - but stand to be corrected). Basically when a 50m penalty is awarded, the opposition players must give a clear unimpeded run while it's being awarded, otherwise they incur another penalty. I think basically the purpose is to stop players trying to delay the player with the kick by still getting themselves into position once the umpire has decided where the kick is to be taken from (so it allows the player to kick it on the moment the umpire has marked where the kick is). I only half agree with the "it's their job". It's a long and taxing game (as much mentally as physically) and you have to remember what we're seeing here is the exception, not the rule. Suppose you have 20 simple shots on goal in a season, and you miss one of them in 5 years then it's only happening 1% of the time (number made up). From a free kick I have less sympathy, but you have to remember it's difficult to practice for every possible situation in free player, and often the player has miniscule time to decide what they're doing and get a kick away. In some of them, other players will be yelling advice/instructions/warning to them which is intended to simplify the situation but might actually compound the problem. If you get a chance, watch some of this years games that were played in Melbourne without a crowd (I think round 12-14?) - there's actually a LOT of talk on the field that you normally don't hear over the crowd (there might be games last year where it's obvious too, but my recollection is that they added fake fan noise which drowned some of it out)

The game in the last 5 years with kicking has got better and worst at the same time , tight angles around the corner most forwards seem to do it with ease but standard drop punt from 15 to 25 meters out straight in front they are missing on a regular basis now , go figure .

When you go to a high calibre football match you can feel that the energy and excitement is absolutely intense, and this affects most of all the younger players who are so eager to please but some have a bit of the teenage ego factor which tends to make them careless or wreck-less. Yes it is extremely annoying for coach and fans. But that is football!

If you take the mark and go back on to your line (behind the mark) the year oh are taking the kick. Is you keep running or move off the line it is play on. Obviously momentum can carry you forward, so you have time to get back behind the mark. The umpire calls the mark and play on to let the players know when they can attack the ball carrier

the AFL has gone the way of recruiting too many athletes rather than actually talented footy players which is the reason why goal kicking has actually gotten a lot worse over the years. they also dont actually get to practice goal kicking all that much at training as the sport scientists have too much say in the training programs.

I blame a lot of the inaccurate goal kicking on the Sports Conditioners and Fitness Co-ordinators employed by the clubs, who limit Goal Kicking practice to 10-15 mins, so the players don't get "soft tissue' injuries. Give me a break! Any local footy coach will tell you it's practice, practice, practice til it becomes second nature. Go back to basics....Old school!
