Thank you for sharing your reaction. I’ve been familiar with the original Simon and Garfunkel version for a long time and liked its beauty, but after hearing Disturbed’s version, so powerful and full of meaning, I realized I had never understood it. The words were there, but they were sung in a soft, melodic way that softened their impact. Here you get it all, the powerful, passionate protest and warning that must have moved Paul Simon to write the poem in the first place. The message needed to be heard then and, if anything, it’s even more needed now in the age of isolating social media and institutionalized misinformation. After all the dark images, it was kind of them to end the video with a hopeful scene, the music writers and performers getting together as the ship reached the shore and a bright sunrise broke through the foggy, deadening clouds. They didn’t want despair, which solves nothing, but a new beginning.

It's very rare to find a cover that compares to the original but even rarer to find one that's better and to me...Disturbed's version is better. They absolutely nailed the interpretation of the lyrics and were able to convey them masterfully!!

I grew up with this song and it just floated over my head. I don't like folk music style and was too young to understand what the words meant. I never changed my mind about the original S&G version. Why would I? I still don't like folksy music and always switched away if it came on. However ... I heard this version one day in the car and I actually listened to the words. Internally (because only psychos talk to themselves out loud in the car, right? Lol. Ok. I muttered it out loud.) "WTF was that?!" I was inexplicably choked up by a song that played around me my whole life, but I never actually, truly heard. So I punched replay at least 9 times in a row, (because that's what any reasonable person would do, right?) and wound up having to pull over and cry. I was traveling to a hotel for work and when I got there, I fired up my laptop and went looking for a video. And holy 💩, I found this ... masterpiece. So a big thank you to S&G for the lyrics (sorry I'm not into your style, Guys), but also a big thank you to Disturbed for actually making me hear it and make it mean something to me. This is a special version. I think it brought this song to more people like me in a very meaningful way. And David Draiman's vocals ... 🔥 He was trained as a cantor, as was his brother, who went the opera route. Why am I telling you this? Idk. Because I randomly know it and if I do, you should, too. Lol. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'm going to their concert in a month or so and cannot wait to hear this live.

I remember this song, as a kid, I didn't like it. Until this cover. This cover, gives Paul Simon's lyrics the intensity that covey the true meaning of the song. If you have ever lived or worked in Manhattan (NYC), it is a NOISY place. After a while you drown it out to the point that you don't care for others. That is why many say that New Yorkers are "rude", we really aren't we are rushed and overwhelmed. Thanks for your reaction.

OMG, the tissues I've 🤧 gone through since I discovered David Draiman and Disturbed performing their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on April 29, 2024. That day I have to believe my spirit 🙏 guides (out of the blue) first led me to a cover video by Dan Vasc singing "Amazing Grace" 👏 and then to the cover video of Disturbed and David Draiman singing this most POWERFUL, EMOTIONAL 😂rendition of Simon and Garfunkels "The Sound of Silence". I'm 75 and was 15 when they released one of the most popular classic songs of our time during the 60's. It is amazing how relevant it is today, actually I feel it is even more relevant than ever in so many different ways. I've spent days since listening and seeing the many channels and each of hosts reactions and have 😢 almost every time. This is the best version I've heard of Sound of Silence, I never understood the upbeat happy sound it has in the original and why everyone kept doing the same in their covers. So, when I heard this and the intensity/gravitas that David puts into it, ugh... I was sold! I get chills EVERY time I listen to it, and sometimes tears depending on my mood while listening to it - especially at the 'god they made' part, wow! If you want to check out someone else who does some awesome covers, check out Chase Holfelder, he does all sorts of covers changing songs that were in a major key to a minor key, or cinematic versions or even using different instruments, like children's toys or kitchen gadgets... yeah, he does a really great job with covers. Also, if you choose to check out more Disturbed, yes, they are a metal band, so enjoy that as well!!

He does this the same way live also in concert and on the Conan Show which you need to watch and listen to with a 20-piece orchestra behind him. This video was done in 2015 and the Conan Show was done in 2016. Find some of the live concerts to listen to, in the Athens, Greece concert the audience sang along, amazing. I am 76 and have listened to Simon & Garfunkel all the way till now. I never understood the song until hearing Disturbed's version.

David was NOT classically trained. He was trained as a Cantor in his Jewish school and that is NOT classical. Cantor is singing a prayer. Classical is a genre written in Europe around 1750 to 1830 whereas cantors officially started in the 7th century. (although singing prayers was something very ancient for jews

The lead singer's name is David Draiman. They are a heavy metal group. The one song You may be familiar with is down with the sickness particularly the first 15-20 seconds. David studied to be a cantor That is a person who sings what the rabbi has just read the Jewish religion. Obviously he did not become a Cantor. So some of his vocal ability c 9:17 omes from his training to be a cantor om how a Cantor sings. Most people view with like this the original Simon & Garfunkel is a warning. Pentatonix cover is a warning but with hope, and this version is the anger that we have yet to learn this lesson. I'm so glad you did this version rather than the live version on Conan. To me the video is as important as any member in the group. It starts off with the instruments being buried and there's not any music just silence and then as it builds your getting the people who are on the other side of the river slowly getting involved and by the end the boat with all the musical instruments is sailing towards the people bringing them music so that there is no silence. There are other people who comment that explain it better I think. three other songs that are out of character so to speak for them is hold onto memories and a reason to fight. That song is very special to me. It's about fighting the Demons of mental health and addiction. I am bipolar and in recovery and I just got my 5-year chip.. these two diseases token. unlike any other disease a person may have. Both of them live in your brain and change how you think and see the world. Other diseases they manifest in whichever system in the body that that disease affects.. and then it just does what that disease does. Mental-health and substance-abuse they latched onto the brain and the brain is the center of everything we do. So it's going to manifest in our thoughts are behaviors are actions. The official video is very good and he has an official lyrical video where he talks about the diseases of mental health and substance abuse. These topics are very very close to things that have happened in his life so it's rather personal. He has another song called Inside the Fire which is about survivor's guilt after an incident that happened in his life. It's a very personal video as the subject matter happened in his life. To me, there's a darkness to this. An emotional warning that took the origonal warning multiple steps beyond the times that it was made. A repeat that grew in emphasis from being ignored. The desparation portrayed in this version is a direct result of todays decline.

Oh man, you just have to react to this super underrated musician Guilhem Desq called Omen and maybe also Le château magique. Both are phenomenal! He uses an ancient and very obscure instrument that has amazing untapped potential. You will not be disappointed, though maybe it won't do all that well if you're more interested in popularity and the algorithm. I can't say it will get a lot of views, but it's amazing all the same. At the very least they're worth a watch for yourself.

I read he was classically trained as a cantor, which is one who sings liturgical songs in synagogue. But he was thrown out of the seminary because he blew up the rabbi’s van along with other atrocities lol. He found his calling singing metal and he can do crazy things with his voice!

I did read a quote from him saying “ I was about two years away from being ordained as a rabbi before I had a, I don’t know what you want to call it, a crisis of conscience, or just awareness.” I’ll have to look up the definition of what being classically trained means. Assuming it doesn’t apply to David, I have a feeling there’s still probably a number of different answers.

@@carolynnewcomb2153 LOL it was a bit tongue and cheek, but apparently you didn't appreciate the nuance. Too many people parrot the error without actually looking it up. Classical voice training is different from being a Cantor. Whilst one might have the position that they both lead to powerful singing voices, they are indeed worlds apart. The training of a cantor goes beyond singing, but speaking as well. Even their spoken words must be precise. Articulating every sound and letter must be precise for a cantor, whereas for an opera singer for instance, they can sing without going into that precise training as much.
