Off Grid Forest Garden Homestead - A day in the life

Autumn has fallen upon the forest garden. Rob takes us through a typical September day on his off-grid permaculture homestead.
It involves a lot of walking around nibbling on leaves & berries whilst watching the ducks & geese. A few of the daily tasks include; repairing a water pump, looking after the animals, harvesting and cooking produce, strimming the meadow areas and preparing the warre beehive for winter.
Acoustic guitar track - Tom Handy
Also, does anyone else find it a touch 'A.S.M.Ry' when the duck eggs are being packaged & labelled?

I love to see those videos of people live free and not the hassle of city. Picking only what you need to eat, not wasting food ,I really think this the way we surpose to live America is such a wasteful place no need for anyone to be hungry the earth has plenty of food, you look do stress free, and enjoying life, we as people make life so very hard chasing money and status, for what. Thanks so much for doing this videos, it really do give me peace.

Not yet, but it's most certainly a future plan when I'm more settled and the garden is all 'finished' (not that a garden is ever finished but once all the planting and setting things up is done, I mean 😁) Many of the trees have dyeing properties in their roots or bark as a secondary and tertiary function. All the colours of the rainbow are covered between them! 🌈😄

@@robsdiscovery - Comfrey pipe, not pie Silly! For harvesting comfrey juice to fertilize my garden once things take off again. I manage a 0.5 acre food forest. It is funny to watch gardener's triumphs and failures. I struggle with rhubarb, and I mean really struggle with it. Each year it gets smaller and smaller. I think I may have been starving it. That being said, sweet potatoes are ridiculously easy here. I really like how you have multiple buildings. That seems like an ideal setup to me. I also really like your green house set up. Does the UK have ticks?
@robsdiscovery
@robsdiscovery 3 жыл бұрын
Silly me 🤦🏻‍♂️ I thought comfrey pie sounded a bit odd 😂 Pipe makes much more sense 😄 It's funny about the rhubarb & sweet potatoes as it's totally the opposite here! But then we are half a world apart 🤷🏻‍♂️ Rhubarb is the hungriest plant I've known! What I didn't mention in my rhubarb video is that I barrowed a load of horse manure onto that site a few years before I planted any, so that's probably why it grows like a weed! 😄 The multiple buildings idea mostly just evolved that way as I bought/built them. It really does work well though. If I'd had any money to begin with I'd have just had one and probably have regretted it! Yes, this is the tick capitol of the world in the summer, it seems, but fortunately none have suckered onto me, yet! 😬 Probably because I never wade through long grass in shorts and have pretty hairless legs! 😆

You accomplished a great deal in your robe.... And we all are a bit "peculiar". While not "off grid" we do have a natural home, and 8 acres of food forest and woodland to play on. And I do mean play. We love it here. And your smallholding is wonderful. A bit less "integrated" with all of the different buildings, but hey, it is what you have. And you seem very comfortable with it and yourself.
@robsdiscovery
@robsdiscovery 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 😄 Integrated would be ideal but it just kind of evolved that way as I didn't have a plan! Not for the various structures at least. There's very much a planting plan. Yeah, I only meant to let the ducks out before getting dressed but once the sequence of events had begun didn't end up dressing until mid morning! 😄 I don't think I could do that this time if year though 🥶 Whereabouts is your plot? Do you grow anything to eat at all?
@jameskniskern2261
@jameskniskern2261 3 жыл бұрын
Our plot is in central Kentucky, USA. And yes, we grow amazing amounts of food. Our food plots are more like your living areas... they evolved this way. We have 3 acres of Chinese Chestnut/hazelnut/black locust woodland on contour swales. My wife has a "kitchen garden" just outside our bedroom door, and I have the rest of the 8 acres to manage. We have 2 ponds, and amazing amounts of wildlife happening in our little dot of amazing. We built our own home, out of post and beams with strawbale infill, and clay plasters from the site.

@robsdiscovery
@robsdiscovery 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Jeffrey, Thanks for your question. That is an interesting one but hard for me to answer as it's been so long now that it's difficult to remember how I was before! 😄 It would be better answered by the people who know me best. From the top of my head I'm imagining that they'd say that I was much calmer and perhaps relentlessly cheerful. I also have a deep sense of security because of owning my own land, therefore feeling like whatever happens in the 'outside' world that at least I'll be okay here 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don't know 🤔 I'll reflect upon it before the next Q&A video and try to include a better answer in that. Please feel free to ask any more questions you have and I'll try to include those too 😊 Yeah, it certainly was a breakfast to be jealous of! 😄😋

Thank you, Jessie 😊 That's a lovely comment to start the day with 😌 When I first lived in the yurt yes, mice were a problem. They nested in the roof, chewed a lot of things I didn't want them to and stole food (including once a whole box of chocolates! But that's another story 😁). They didn't really bother me though in terms of getting near me ir making me jump. In fact I made friends with one and it was quite courteous with its 'intrusion'. When I resurrected the yurt three years ago in its current incarnation I was sure to thoroughly mouse proof it. I'll explain properly how in the next Q&A video now that you've asked but basically it involved digging in and securing rodent mesh all around the base and making the ropes on the sides unclimbable using flower pots! 😄

Sometimes I think nothing's changed until looking back and realising it's totally different! The garden too 😆 I'm intrigued as you how you've seen this as I don't remember sending you the link to it 🤔 and I've not made it public yet 😄 I don't mind at all though 😊

@@persephoneblue4276 That's really funny! I normally let my patrons see the videos a week before clicking the 'make public' button and so far you're the only other person that's been able to find it! 😄 I'm glad you did though 😊 Did you like the surprise guest at the end? 😉

Will the tadpoles arrive in summer? :)
@robsdiscovery
@robsdiscovery 7 ай бұрын
Round these parts the frog spawn is layed around February/March and the hatched tadpoles can be seen from around April, so still spring time. There'll be many a froglet by the summer 🐸😊

It's from a teeny-tiny trickle of a spring that's then collected and pumped electrically to where it's needed. I don't believe I've ever explained it throughly in a KZbin video (a little in my 'Off-grid shower & toilet shed' video) but I did in an Instagram video last summer time, if you follow that? It's also called Rob's Discovery 😄

Sometimes. The geese usually keep them away but a particularly brazen one has taken nine ducks in the last couple of months. It's never happened before then!
