And produced by the one and only Kevin Smith! For another classic-but dark-film, see "Gone Baby Gone"- directed by Ben, starring brother Casey.

Yeah, "exec-produced" by Kevin Smith, though Smith has said his biggest role was reading the script and giving it to Miramax who bought it and got the ball rolling. Damon and Affleck even asked him to direct, to which he said, NO WAY; it has to be directed by a MASTER director. Robin easily should've won the Oscar for FISHER KING (his best lead performance in my opinion), but GOOD WILL HUNTING definitely gave him some great speeches (and him deciding to do the movie was what got it made in the first place)

The last line of the movie "SOB stole my line", was a Robin Williams adlib. Damon and Affleck immediately knew it was the perfect ending line, so they kept it in the movie.

Two things: that bench scene is why Robin Williams won the Oscar Second, that “it’s not your fault” scene is why Matt Damon has one of the most convincing cries in Hollywood, and it’s why I love these two characters so much This movie is great, and it deserves all the praise it gets. Btw, there was a limit of how many f-words they were allowed to have in the movie, and the script supervisor said they were off by over 200 times 😂 but the nasty language kinda adds a nice touch to it

Truth, and I would like to add one more thing. The scene were Robin is talking about his wife farting in her sleep was completely improvised. Matt Damon's laugh is completely authentic. If you watch very closely you can say the camera move slightly because even the camera man was shaking with laughter. Brilliant!

One of the best movies ever. Robin Williams deserved his Oscar. And even more so, Ben and Matt did. Each time I have watched this movie over the years, and am even more impressed with the outstanding script written by these two very young men. I went to see this movie when it came out as a date night while in college. I only chose it because Robin was in it. By the time he shows up in it, I had forgotten he was in because the story had sucked me in. Ben and Matt wrote this film to give them a chance to act. I always forget that younger generations don't know Robin's more adult work. The movie you must see to really experience the genius of Robin Williams is Good Morning Vietnam. The legendary DJ scenes are completely improv, which is why the actors reactions are so authentic. The script only said DJ talk. Watching that movie and any Robin Williams Stand Up specials will let you understand how talented Robin Williams really was.

@@x_mau9355you missed the point of the movie. It’s not about genius diamonds in the rough …it’s about not being afraid of taking risks. And this can apply to anyone. That’s exactly why Affleck tells him “you’re sitting on a winning lottery ticket and you’re too much of a pussy to cash it in.” Damon merges that thought process with what he gained from Williams and takes the risk, not to go find a job, he knows he can get any job he wanted…but to find a true companion and true happiness.

So Robin added or changed a couple lines and made the role his own. I'm from Cambridge. Ben & Matt are from Cambridge. I'm a bit older than they are. I used to see them hanging out in Harvard Square on Friday nights. They'd alway's ask me to go into the liquor store and buy them a six-pack of Budweiser. We also went to the same high school. Cambridge Rindge & Latin. They were really good kids...

Robin’s character’s name is Sean Maguire. Robin Williams became so beloved, so huge on the screen that millions of fans simply didn’t bother to know the names of the characters he played. It’s a fascinating part of Williams’s legacy.

The monolog on the park bench? Robin did it in one take. And the story about his wife farting in her sleep was an adlib. Matt busting up laughing was completely spontaneous. But it made a PERFECT scene. As to the ending, the career is waiting for Will wherever he goes.

One movie that is so amazing that people often forget about with robin Williams is patch adams. It is based on a true story and is phenomenal! All Rubin Williams films are 100/100. Mrs doubtfire is a MUST! Also he insisted that 10% of the extras used on each film he was in were homeless persons so they could earn a bit of money.❤

The “It’s not your fault” scene just kills me every time! Ben Affleck has been Batman and Daredevil (you probably recognize him from the latter?) The younger guy that hangs with them is Aflleck’s actual little brother Casey. If you want to see a fun heist movie with Casey and Matt Damon I suggest “Ocean’s Eleven”…or an action Damon film is “Bourne Identity”. For another serious Robin Williams you can try “Dead Poets Society”…otherwise some of his fun movies are “Mrs Doubtfire” or “Jumanji”

Also, the last line of the movie is a famous Robin Williams improv line. Originally, the movie ends with Robin reading the letter, when Robin said, " Son of a bitch, stole my line" Matt Damon stated that is the perfect ending for this movie.

5:44 The redheaded friend is played by Cole Hauser, who you’ve seen before in DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993) (also as a friend of Ben Affleck’s character), and possibly more recently as Rip Wheeler in the Paramount Network hit series Yellowstone (although his hair is dyed black for that show). Cole is actually the maternal great-grandson of one of the Warner Brothers, Harry Warner, who co-founded the film studio that bears the family name with his brothers Sam, Albert, and Jack.

- One of the film's end themes is "Miss Misery" by the late Elliott Smith (responsible for his cover of "Because", originally by the Beatles, heard at the end of American Beauty). - Also, the bar scene with Clark (the Vickers guy, portrayed by Scott William Winters) was reenacted / parodied in Jay & Strike Back. Speaking of which, Kevin Smith (aka Silent Bob himself) took up an executive producer credit for GWH.

I am so astounded that these two young men came up with this story and of course you know Robin had to improvise some lines in that ingenious way he has. The Matt Damon movies you should watch are The Martian and the Jason Bourne movies starting with The Bourne Identity. One of the guys you may not have recognized was Casey Affleck Ben’s brother and Cole Hauser who was in Yellowstone.

My first introduction to Robin as a child was Mork and Mindy. From his zany antics, he had me hooked on his energy and bizarre outlook his character portrayed. From the Na Nooo Na Nooo, I drove my mum nuts using it at the end of my sentences. People from my generation grew up with him, watching him evolve from funny to deeply and darkly serious roles. I miss him greatly. And if he was still around, I often wonder if he would have ever been in well known films like Harry Potter as a teacher. He was a total other element with a beautiful empathy built in. And full of almost innocent child like humour that current comedians cannot match.

This is such a great film. Robin Williams and Matt Damon are BRILLIANT. Since you loved this one... I've got some absolutely brilliant films to recommend. They all feature fantastic story / acting / direction / cinematography / special effects. Most are totally under the radar gems: ARRIVAL: Probably the greatest alien-invasion story of all... Realistic.. surprising ... beautifully told. CHILDREN OF MEN: The great director, Alfonso Cuaron knocks it out of the park with this near-future dystopian tale. You'll never forget it. GRAVITY: Another Cuaron film... this one starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in this epic space adventure. PLEASANTVILLE: Starts off a comedy, but quickly veers into a brilliant look at society. Really inventive. STRANGER THAN FICTION: Will Ferrell in a non-comedic role... He's funny in some parts, but this is the most underrated, wonderful little films I've ever seen. A host of excellent actors and a great story moves this along beautifully. You'll love these films... I'm sure about it. All the best!

I think the problem Will had was that, deep down, he felt he did not deserve Skylar or the opportunities that the professor was dangling in front of him. He "knew" that sooner or later they would realize that he wasn't worth it and abandon him, so he pushed them away first. This is a very insidious thing to deal with as the more someone praises you and tells that you are good at something, the more you become convinced that they are wrong and sooner or later they will finally realize the "truth" and turn on you or abandon you. It will ruin the life of anyone who suffers from this condition as anything negative reinforces your belief while anything positive also gets turned around in your mind to be a negative.
