When Jackson was writing “Doctor My Eyes” he lived below Glenn Frey before the Eagles. Every morning Glenn would be awakened early with a tea kettle, followed by hours of the same song on the piano, over and over. It occurred to Glenn “so that’s how you write songs, you put in the work”.

And the flip side is Glenn was known to party late, jamming. Jackson couldn't sleep from the music so he had an: "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." moment. "Take it Easy" resulted it would seem.

"In 65 I was 17 , In 69 I was 21". Those lyrics meant so much to me mainly because I was 17 and 21 in those years. Jackson Browne in my opinion writes poetry and puts it to music. I have always loved him music, his lyrics and his voice.

I believe he is the greatest singer/songwriter of my life. I have seen him twice--never disappoints, and have all of his albums. One of my favorites is "For a Dancer" and the line, "keep on dancing and somewhere between the time you arrive and the time you go, might be a reason you're alive but you'll never know" I used this quote in one of my lessons along with the article about how John Donovon's backpack (found after he died) saved a couple lost in the wilderness.

Running on Empty came out in 1977, so he is an old soul now. But his history does go back to the 1960s, and when he was young he was tied to Andy Warhol. But he made his name around Los Angeles, was friends with the guys who became Eagles, and wrote Take It Easy with Glenn Frey. Well respected, and despite some rough times in his life, he is still out there performing.

He was also good friends with the late Warren Zevon. There was a whole gang of singers and songwriters in the 70s who hung out together, wrote songs together, and sang on each other's albums. Jackon, Warren, the Eagles members, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, guitarist Waddy Wachtel, drummer Russ Kunkel, even writer/journalist Hunter S Thompson and actor Johnny Depp.

Lyrics: [Verse 1] Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields In '65, I was seventeen and running up 101 I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on [Chorus] Running on, running on empty Running on, running blind Running on, running into the sun But I'm running behind [Verse 2] Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive In '69, I was twenty-one and I called the road my own I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on [Chorus] Running on, running on empty Running on, running blind Running on, running into the sun But I'm running behind [Bridge] Everyone I know, everywhere I go People need some reason to believe I don't know about anyone but me If it takes all night, that'll be all right If I can get you to smile before I leave [Verse 3] Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through Looking into their eyes I see them running too [Chorus] Running on, running on empty Running on, running blind Running on, running into the sun But I'm running behind Honey, you really tempt me You know the way you look so kind I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind (Running on) You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find (Running blind) Running into the sun but I'm running behind

Those years 1965 & 1969)were during the Vietnam War, as well as the Civil Rights protests. So much turmoil, and this song captures those memories when he makes reference to the timeline and how young he was. Yet most of the greatest hits of that time have nothing to do with the turmoil we associate with that time. There were a few protest songs that made it into the top 40 but the #1 song in July of 1968 was Frank and Nancy Sinatra. Go figure.

One of the most massive hits of the 70's. The year it was released, this song was EVERYWHERE. So great, such a lovely sound. This song was from his mega-hit live album "Running On Empty". When he says "if I can get you to smile before I leave" originally it meant a girl, but here he's saying it to the audience. His relationship with the crowd on this album was magical. (By the way, "running up 101" refers to the 101 freeway that comes up out of Los Angeles and runs all the way to Northern California. It was the route I always took when I would visit L.A. from NoCal.)

@foxandscout

These Days: written when he was 16. He didn’t record it for years. First Nico!(Warhol’s Velvet Underground) recorded it in 1967 . Then folksinger Tom Rush in 1970. Then Jackson’s friend, Greg Allman (Allman Brothers) began to sing it on tour and both he and Jackson finally recorded it within a few weeks of each other in 1973. Many have recorded it since. A gorgeous song of loss and regret, it’s incredible for a young teen to write it. Jackson Brown released in on the album For Everyman. Every song a gem.

I had the privilege of selling t-shirts at one of his concerts in the early 90s. A Native American friend of mine asked me to help them out since all of the proceeds of the sales went to their organization. The concert was fantastic--much smaller than the time I had seen him in the early 80s at a big outdoor festival. (I had also seen him at a big rally in Central Park.) Long a fan of his, I was flabbergasted when he invited us to meet him backstage! He was small in stature and very soft spoken and was genuinely interested in the cause. While Running on Empty was huge when I was in high school, my heart was in his earlier stuff (I could probably still sing every song on his debut album) like "Doctor, My Eyes", "Something Fine", "Rock Me On the Water" as well as Late for the Sky. His lyrical abilities are superior.

70's and early 80's classic rock had that unique sound where bands and the studio engineers would use a panning effect (think using your headphones where the sound moves from one side to the other), and where each instrument shines, and yet plays together with the incredible harmonies; and had lyrics and melodies that could lift you beyond the clouds. The 70's also had the most ambitious music of any recent decade. Jackson Browne and other groups exemplified that. Brilliant.

Wonderful reaction. Jackson is a great artist. At one point Glen Frey and Don Henley (The Eagles) lived above Jackson Browne in L.A. and said they learned about songwriting from listening to him write songs right under their feet! LOL Jackson is certainly one of the originators of the California Rock sound....just a little laid back.

It was Glenn Frey & John David Souther who lived above Jackson, not Glenn & Don Henley. Quote “at one point in the late ‘60s early ‘70s, Glenn Frey & John David Souther were roommates in Echo Park, California & their downstairs neighbor was a guy named Jackson Brown, but Jackson soon had to move & get a bigger place because his new girlfriend moved in with him, a girl named Linda Ronstadt” end of quote.

Thanks for playing "the memories of my youth". I like Jackson ALMOST as much as I like you folks! : ) Now, if only I could convince you to play some of the original Bee Gee's music like "Massachusetts", "I Started A Joke", or "I've Got To Get A Message To You", my life would have meaning once again!

In 77 I was 16 and could drive legally anywhere in the USA at the time. I remember that trip from Idaho to Tennessee after my father retired from the AF every time I hear this song. It was about 2000 miles driving my parents 75 cherry red Camaro. What a great car, great song and better memories. Thx guys!

Jackson was responsible for helping Stevie Ray Vaughan get signed to Epic/Sony & get his first album recorded. He has some beautiful & haunting songs, The Barricades of Heaven, Before The Deluge, The Pretender, For A Dancer, Lawyers In Love and many more. You can't go wrong with anything of his. He is a good guy too.

I grew in the 70’s and “Running On Empty” was on heavy rotation on FM radio. Jackson Browne was one of the best known singer-songwriter in the 70’s He co-wrote “ Take It Easy” for The Eagles and was the background vocalist on that track. I loved Jackson in the 70’s, 80’s . I don’t recall any Jackson Brown songs in the 90’s, but I could be wrong.

Yes and FM radio would play songs from the entire album and not just the top 40, three minute cuts. You could really appreciate the artist and the entire concept of the album. Jackson Browne had a few top 40 hits, but primarily he was an FM artist.

The entire Running on Empty album was recorded on the road. In concert, motel rooms and the tour bus. Jackson surrounds himself with the best musicians. David Lindley on guitars, Leland Sklar on bass (he plays for Phil Collins). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Bruce Springsteen. Who said he wished he could write songs like Jackson. "Doctor My Eyes" is a great tune featuring Jesse Ed Davis ( an Oklahoman) on lead guitar. "In the Shape of a Heart" is great tune also. All Jackson's tunes are great. ☮❤🎶

You need to redo that last reaction to Jackson and include "The Load Out" with "Stay. " Frankly it was a rock n roll travesty to separate the two. Who's with me?

EXACTLY!! And THANK YOU! I’m with you 💯 and have been commenting the same. The song “Stay” is pretty much a straightforward cover of the great original, but what makes it so special and great is the meaning given it from the context of “The Load Out”. Being a retired Teamster driver who has worked with lotsa road crew buddies it is a very special song near and dear to our hearts for the recognition and gratitude he expresses in “The Load Out”.

In about 1970, I went to a Laura Nyro concert at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center in Los Angeles & her opening act was some guy I'd never heard of, Jackson Browne. From his name, we thought he'd be a black soul singer & were surprised to see a skinny white guy with long hair walk out & sit at the piano! A lot of the audience, who were probably older than we were & could get into the Troubadour (you had to be 21), & knew who he was. He totally blew us away & his 1st album hadn't even been released yet, but we left there that night as Jackson Browne fans.

When you say “old soul” please listen to to These Days. He wrote that song when he was only 16 yeats old. The maturity and worldliness of the lyrics would be great for any songwriter but absolutely stunning for a y teenager. Jackson Browne is one of the best songwriters of his era. Rock & Roll hall of fame and songwriters hall of fame are the most prominent awards but he has earned multiple other awards as an artist along with recognition for his humanitarian and environmental activism. He is a remarkable human being along with being a great writer, musician, and performer.
