The man is a human metronome. His consistency and ability to keep time is genuinely impressive and his natural talent made him irreplaceable as a Beatle. There is a reason the other 3 all called Ringo in at one point or another for their solo projects and in turn showed up to play on his without hesitation. To that end I'd say Ringo is a beast on everything he recorded with the Beatles.

During the last part of the interview, Ringo said "Rain" was one of his personal favorite Beatles compositions because the drum intro was so much fun to play. Every time I hear "Rain," I think how Ringo's memories made stop-and-go driving a bearable experience.

This is one of the two songs where the Beatles' engineer Geoff Emerick rigged up two bass amplifiers facing each other with one having the transducer wiring reversed so that it functioned like a giant microphone and took in the sound waves from Paul's amp and turned them to electrical signals going to the board, I guess. Paul and Geoff had talked about how they could get a really BIG bass sound like on Motown records in those days. The other song they used this on was "Paperback Writer." Paul also used a Rickenbacker bass on this cut, although he's shown in the video playing his trusty Hofner. I've had each of the Beatles as my favorite at different times. When I was a drummer in elementary and junior high it was Ringo. In bands I've favored singing George songs because his range is lower. John was such a great shouter...nobody could holler like him. Paul is the great melody writer of our time.

@@benjaminbarrera214 For his live shows, we have one channel DI, and another channel is a miked amp for Paul's bass, and the same for his guitar rig. For Rain, a conventional mic and amp setup was used. Not the procedure implemented on Paperback Writer. The comment above is mistaken about that.

I'd say Paul does most of the hollering songs, from Long Tall Sally through to Oh! Darling, via I'm down and Helter Skelter. John has a couple of notable ones too, of course, famously Twist and Shout, plus there's Bad Boy and Don't Let Me Down. Both pretty good at the belting, I'd say.
@amb2745
@amb2745 2 ай бұрын
@@benjaminbarrera214 it was John who asked Geoff Emerick about how songs in the U.S. have a more bass presence than Beatles records in the UK. Geoff told John that it had to do with cutting the record so that the record needle wouldn't jump when playing song with a heavier bass content. EMI's technical division came up with a way to control the bass so that there's more bass without causing the record needle to jump. It's called Automatic Transient Overload Control, or ATOC. If you want to know more about it, check out Mark Lewishom's Beatles Recording Sessions book for more details.

@@gristlevonraben I love the Doors too and have often wondered what would have happened had he not died. But he left at a good time, since ALL the Doors' albums were great, and the whole music scene was changing and would be completely transformed by 1975. The angel that inspired the Sixties had finally left the earth. The surviving bands (Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Traffic, and a few others) carried on valiantly, but I think that by the early 70s their best work was already behind them. The same would probably have happened to the Doors. Or Jim would have become a full-time poet.

Paul! Funny, sweet, honest to reporters, love the fans, family man-always playing with John’s son, where John learned how to handle kids- he was clueless. And his songs! Never stopped writing and could play so many instruments-compared some bands to the orchestration of the past times. He was always about the moods and changes in timing in his songs. And soooooo cute! Fell at first sight!❤

The first Pop Song with backward masking on it. That gibberish singing at the end is actually the first line reversed. And if you really want to get "trippy" with the Beatles check out 'Love you to, 'Tomorrow Never Knows', 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds', 'Only a Northern Song', 'It's All too Much', 'Blue Jay Way'. 'Inner light; 'I'm only Sleeping", 'Baby You're a Rich man' and "Because".

The Jefferson Airplane had probably as many talented people as the Beatles, both in terms of musicianship and songwriting ability. Three great songwriters (Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Marty Balin), top tier musicianship (bassist Jack Casady was one of the best of the classic-rock era, lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen practically invented the San Francisco acid-rock fuzz sound, Grace was a good pianist and Kantner a superb rhythm guitarist), and excellent vocals, especially from Grace and Marty. But the candle burned too fast.

I've always been a Paul guy but of course acknowledge the immense talent of John, George and Ringo. John was so creative especially in their early to mid-years and also had a great voice. Paul is the most talented musician of the group, the professional when needed to get things started and done, and also a nice guy, like Ringo, so I believe he was the most important member. George played some great lead and rhythm guitar along with his superb backing vocals/harmonies. Ringo kept things loose and kept the beat ... all ... the ... time.

Such a deep catalogue! The Beatles are the greatest because they have winner after winner after winner. This was the B-Side to "Paperback Writer", so it's a fine contrast to Paul McCartney's perky A-side, with John Lennon showcasing his experiments in psychedelia. Similarly groundbreaking songs by John in this 1965-1966 period include "Tomorrow Never Knows", "She Said, She Said", "Dr. Robert", "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "I'm Only Sleeping". Worthy listens, every one. Geoff Emerick, one of the recording engineers, said that he got the sound here by speeding up the recording of the instruments, but slowing down John's vocal when he recorded it separately. When both were adjusting to normal speed, the backing track had this scratchy feel and John's voice was higher than normal, and the effect was what you hear. Btw, I'm #TeamJohn, easily. (No offense to the others.)

@@shyman99 What about her? Anybody who watched "Get Back" saw that Yoko was not in the least disruptive and unfairly blamed. Let's recall that it was PAUL who actually quit the group, and who tried to arrogate all the control to himself. Maybe if he hadn't insisted on turning the finances over to Linda's dad, things would have worked differently. (And yes, I know that Allan Klein turned out to be the scam artist Paul thought him to be. That doesn't mean he couldn't have worked to find a more agreeable solution than "give me all the power.")

Rain is a drug induced Tour de Force song from John Lennon. At this time in the Spring of 1966, Tape Speed Manipulation became more common on Beatles recordings. Here the band first played the instrumental track in a higher key (B flat)) and at a faster tempo. Whilst speeding up the tape machine during the recording of the basic track. When the tape machines speed was restored to the standard setting (making the song now slower and in the key of G major) it gave the instruments more depth and sustain. John then sang his lead vocal with the tape machine slowed down. Again, when the tape machine was restored to standard speed, John's voice had an almost otherworldly quality. Amazing. 2 separate tape speed manipulations in 1 song! Throw in the reversed Lennon vocals on the songs fade. The Beatles at their experimental best. This means "RAIN", the song we've "known for all these years', was in reality never performed by the Beatles and was a creation of 2 separate 'songs'. Great reaction I really enjoyed it. RNB

@@tawnieriekena7 Good evening. What I said was, it was not a single performance. It was 2 separate and distinct music beds. One for the band's instrumental performance (B flat I fixed my OP, thanks for the heads up) ) and one for John's Lead vocal. Please note, I never said grafted. The tape speed wasn't manipulated out of necessity i.e. A Hard Day's Night and In My Life. It was used for creating a sonic collage. Something beyond a "normal" Beatles record. I wish they played it during the 1966 World Tour. Who have been awesome. Cheers, RNB

@ricknbacker5626 Yes. Track 1 is Ringo on drums, Paul and John on guitars at 42 kps. Track 2 is Paul's bass at 50 kps Tracks 3 and 4 are John's vocal at 42 kps. ( rather than using ADT on the lead vocal, the finished track features 2 separate takes of John's lead, (actual double tracking.) A reduction mix was made , combining tracks 3 and 4 at the slowed down 50 kps. The now empty Track 4 was filled with Ringo on tambourine, and John, Paul, and George on backing vocals treated with ADT ( artificial double tracking) and vari -speed manipulation. So technically, it was composed of five separate performance takes. While Rain was never performed live, its flipside, Paperback Writer was performed on the 1966 Tour.
