This is one of those PERFECT SONGS. NOT A DAMN THING ABOUT IT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. NOTHING.
@MikeLyons20112 жыл бұрын
I've always understood this song as a meditation in 3 parts. Part 1: Despair. "Same old song...". Nothing matters, what's the point? Part 2: Lamentation. The violin represents weeping, someone crying at the futility of life and how death awaits us all. Part 3: Catharsis. "Don't hang on..." Yes, the same fate awaits us all, but that makes what we do NOW even more important. Be good, be kind. Don't get caught up in the trappings of life like material things. They all crumble to dust just like us. This song is so beautiful and timeless. Many have commented on how short it is but that is also part of its message. Life is short. I'm 50 and I've listened to this songs hundreds of times over the years and it still rings true and brings tears to my eyes. That is rare in this life. How ironic that a song about nothing lasting can be so enduring?

Well said. Sometimes when I get a little high (I'm 68, retired from active duty with some problems) and sit in the yard at night in a simple lawn chair looking at things, I get a little sad thinking what this song represents for all of us. Then again, it makes me smile at simple pleasures.

This song EXACTLY mimics the verses found in the Book of Ecclesiastes: “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?" "All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return." There are about four more that sound the same, but you should get the point.

They already did Nights in White Satin but they did the live version without the beautiful ending. I think they've done the proper version since then.

If you were around in 1978, this song was EVERYWHERE on the radio. Superior musicianship in this band. I actually helped a friend pick out a great stereo based on this song. Listened to multiple sets of speakers, and it just never got old. Great band, great song !! So sorry we lost "Big Red" as you call him recently. My wife and I were lucky enough to see Kansas with Robby Steinhardt (Big Red's real name) a few years back in the Wolf Den at the Mohegan Sun casino in CT, and they were still so good. I will always love Kansas !!

I'm 55 years old, born in 1968 and grew up in a musical family around a bunch of musicians in the live music scene in Houston at the time, with all the great music of the 70's (and 80's and 90's) and it's SUCH A JOY to see all you young folks discovering and enjoying it now! Thank you for sharing your experience with us and giving us a medium to relive it as well! The nostalgia is intense!! 🥰💗 And I'm exactly the same way, my 3 favorite instruments are piano, acoustic guitar and violin (the strings in general, cello is great too). They're mesmerizingly beautiful. And I LOVE the horns! I need to hear me some Chicago after this. And you're spot on about the variety. Back then, every album would come out and there'd be the heavy rock and the ballads on the same album. The ballads were SO GOOD from those rock bands. If you haven't heard them yet, you've got to listen to Whitesnake's "Is This Love". One of my favorites from college!! 💗

If you do a reaction to "Nights in White Satin", be sure it is the long version which times out at 7:28 for the studio version. It has some poetry at the end, where the single version doesn't. The London Festival Orchestra backed up the Moody Blues on this entire album, so you have a full orchestra. And congratulations on your new baby!!!

It's a very powerful song about the impermanence of life. It, like Jim Croce's song "Time In A Bottle" reminds you to live and appreciate every moment, because eventually, and at any time, it could be gone (like dust in the wind).

Imagine driving down a small highway in Kansas, surrounded by wheat fields. There is a storm brewing ahead of us and, as we approach it, the wind is blowing the golden, ready-to-harvest wheat in waves. Then this song comes on the radio. A whole different perspective to the words from that moment to present day. This is an actual and fond memory of mine relating to this song.

when I first heard this song as a teenager in the 70s I felt so moved, especially by the lyrics. It was this song that totally rearranged my priorities in life and money went down to the bottom of that list. This song has such a spirituality. for me that is only. matched by my other favourite "When I`m old and Wise" by the Alan Parsons Project.
