Our House was written by Graham Nash when he was living with Joni Mitchel. They had just come home, Graham sat at the piano and wrote about the moment of their arrival. "The song originated from a domestic event that took place while Graham Nash was living with Joni Mitchell (and her two cats) in her house in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, after they had gone out for breakfast and had bought an inexpensive vase on Ventura Boulevard. Nash wrote the song in an hour, on Mitchell's piano."

Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Marrakesh Express"!!! When you get back to CSN&Y, you'll love their "Our House", "Carry On", "Find The Cost Of Freedom" and "Deja Vu"!!! edit- from 1969-1987 Neil Young was only on 1 studio album, 1 live album and 1 compilation album with CSN. Very briefly with them btw '69-'70 and '74-'75(during their classic period). fyi, Boston's harmonies were all done by lead singer Bradley Delp on the first 3 studio albums.

"Almost Cut My Hair" is a CSNY song that David Crosby takes lead vocals on. Great jamming song. "Helpless" is one that Neil Young sings lead on. Amber, I think with the harmonies of the Gibbs brothers, they blend so well because they are family (genetics). I’m sure you’ve heard of fathers and sons or brothers having a very similar voices (tones). With Crosby, Stills and Nash you can hear each individual voice because they have different tones. They all blend well in their own way!

For me personally this was one of the first bands to have such a high level of harmonies. This song is a perfect example of that. Their harmonies are almost angelic. The words are exceptional as well. They were a true force of nature.

Glad you’re paying tribute to David Crosby. While “Helplessly Hoping” is a great song, Crosby wrote “Guinevere”. The live version with Crosby & Nash on the BBC is intricate. Then there Crosby’s first solo album “If I Could Only Remember My Name”. You’ll particularly like “Laughing” and “Music is Love”.

Their harmonies are truly second to none. They just match so perfectly and they need no over dubs. It's like pieces of a puzzle. Different shapes but together make the perfect picture. I think Young came in on the second album playing on some songs so they added his name. He brought a more electric sound to the group and some edginess.

There are overdubs in this song. Stephen Stills voice can clearly be heard double tracking. Oher multitrack tricks are done here also. The studio magic still cannot compare to CSN's raw talent though. I have loved CSN since I bought this album on its initial release.

The late David Crosby once said that he and Graham Nash decided early on that they would not sing harmonies in "major triads" like most groups did. That is one thing that provides their unique sound. Nash once told an interviewer "We don't have a monopoly on the notes, but NOBODY sounds like David, Stephen, and me when we sing together." Love this song - you really can't go wrong with CSN or CSN&Y. Great reaction again Jay and Amber.

I've always loved the story of how they started singing together. They were all at Cass Elliott's house and Steven and David played a new song they'd just written (You Don't Have To Cry). Graham said "play it again", so they did. Then Graham asked them to play it a third time and he joined in on the high harmony. And thus greatness was born.

I'm with Amber, they are my favorite harmonizers of all time, and this song is my favorite harmony. You can see the layers unfolding in the chorus when Stills starts it off with one person in his midrange vocal, then Nash adds the two alone high part which sounds great, but it isn't complete until Crosby adds that three together deep rich bottom and they are for each other. My pleasure to see them 3 times, the harmonies live were amazing. Love you, David.

Hi you two guys, regards again from the Black Forest! So wonderful to hear your comments on those songs that came out long before you were born. So, as you're interested in Neil Young's contribution, I would suggest a song from the album Déjà vu - actually you could pick any song, but it would be Helpless, or my personal favorite, Country Girl. And going back to the roots: The Byrds (David Crosby) - Turn! Turn! Turn! or So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star Buffalo Springfield (Stephen Stills & Neil Young) - For What It's Worth The Hollies (Graham Nash) - I Can't Let Go or He Ain't Heavy. Keep it going and thanks for your channel!

Check out “ Four and Twenty” by him and them on the Deja Vu album. “ Guinevere” is Crosby’s masterpiece along with Wooden Ships ( cowritten by Stills and Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane. ) These beautiful harmonies in HH are very folky bluegrass like. Happy to see you react to this classic Stills tune! Hopeful that you'll eventually do either of the great songs from that first album written by, and featuring lead vocals by Crosby - "Long Time Gone" and "Guinnevere". "Long Time Gone" is a rocker with Stills playing electric guitar, bass and organ, while "Guinnevere" is a beautiful, hypnotic song that features some of the best harmonies you could hope to hear. "Wooden Ships", another great great song from that album, was co-written by Stills, Crosby and Paul Kantner of the Jefferson Airplane. Neil Young actually joined them right before their appearance at Woodstock to be part of their touring band - y'all have reacted to "Suite/Judy Blue Eyes" from there - where they played an acoustic and an electric set, with Neil joining them toward the end of the acoustic set.

Neil brought a harder edge and a more sardonic outlook. The great anthem he penned with the group was "Ohio", about the Kent State Massacre. He wrote it within four hours of the event and they performed it that night. A hard-hitting, fixed stare into the heart of darkness that was America in the late 60's.

A monumental album full of amazing music with Helplessy Hoping being one of my favorites. CS&N broke the music barrier in my home growing up. My beautiful mother heard Suite Judy Blue Eyes on "her" radio station and bought me this record for my birthday in December of 69 which allowed "hippie music" to be played on the family stereo. Still have the vinyl. Rest in love David.

One reason The Bee Gees sound is harmoniously similar is by being brothers their voices have the same timbre….were as CSN are 3 distinct voice timbres

Great reaction and thanks for sharing. Very rarely does a cover band do as well or better but different than the original. But Home Free does this song as an a cappella arrangement and its mesmerizing. It would be awesome to see you react to it and compare it to this. Because harmonies are beautiful. Chris

One of the reasons why their harmonies are so unique is they share singing the melody when they're singing harmony. If you listen carefully, you can hear it move between the 3 of them as they're singing, especially on the chorus.

This song was written by Stephen Stills. His voice is on the bottom, Graham Nash on the top and David in the middle -the glue of the harmonies. Amber -If u want to hear a a gorgeous song listen to - 'Lady of the Island'. It's a Graham Nash song-with David doing back up and harmony. There is a part in the middle song where u can really hear David's voice and it will melt u. Soooo good. Another one is called 'To the Last Whale' - it has 2 parts: a prelude called "A Critical Mass' and the main song called 'Wind on the Water'. (It was co-written -Crosby & Nash) It's beautiful with a great message.

Wonderful. Other CSN 🔥= Carry On (with Young), Woodstock (also with Young), and Marrakesh Express. You'll love them all.

I love this song. It's fun to sing along with each one - sometimes David, sometimes Graham, sometimes Steve. Sometimes mixing it up. A great song!

I am one who sings harmony and can definitely pick out all three voices and have sung them with my brothers and sisters...I am the oldest of 8! Their harmonies are not just singing a higher or lower of the same melody...they are singing definite and dissonant harmony...they were unique, and pull the voice right out of my lungs!

The voices are mixed in the song so that there is one in the middle, one on the left, and one on the right. That's one reason they can be heard so well individually. CSNY with Neil Young did a song called "Carry On". Check it.

What separates CSN's harmonies from all others is that the harmonies are front and center, the music is simply a soft background. Most harmonies tend to compete with the vocals to hide certain imperfections.

Neil Young was in Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills. He was later asked to sing on the album “Deja Vu.” He was like a guest star and floated in and out of the band. He had a lot of music in his head and liked to be on his own. As a young man he had polio, diabetes and epilepsy. On a different note, I would like to see you react to some early Bee Gees, like “I Started a Joke.”

Most groups harmonize on the chorus where so many of CSN and later Y would harmonize the whole song. There songs never get old and there message is always spot on.

Saw these guy way back in 1976. A truly great group with perfect harmony! Was wondering…. I noticed all the great musicians and groups on your walls behind you. So my question is how are you missing the one super group that really launched the rock&roll age….the Beatles!…. from the walls?

I have 3 copies of this album. My wife and I each brought one to the marriage (everyone had it). I'm not sure where the third one came from. The iconic photograph of them on the couch was going to be re-shot in proper CSN order, but when they returned to the location, the house had been demolished. This caused some confusion about who was who. For now, try holding it up to a mirror. Just remember that Stephen isn't left handed. : ) I used to think maybe the guy in the doorway on the back cover was Neil Young. Apparently a popular misconception. I eventually learned it was their drummer. While Cream is considered by many as the first super group in Rock, CSN soon followed.
