The singer Ian McCulloch wrote this song very quickly and said that basically god sent this song to him. He even credited half the lyrics to God. Its basically about the eternal struggle between fate and the human will. Amazing song.

@italoblu TBF, McCullough also said that, (paraphrasing here) he believes the song has universal appeal because it can be about "everything". So he wouldn't object if your personal interpretation was different. To me, it's about vampires, so that's what I choose to believe it's about. LOL

@@aerynsunx I always thought it was about a vampire, too, until I read an interview with Ian McCulloch. After seeing what he had to say, I believe he's saying that he has faith that at the end of his life he will be given the opportunity to accept Christ before he's taken.

The song 'Lips Like Sugar' by the band Echo & The Bunnymen, released in 1987, is a composition that mixes elements of romance and desire with a feeling of unattainability. The lyrics describe an almost ethereal female figure, comparing her to a swan that glides gracefully over the water, suggesting a beauty and elegance that is both attractive and untouchable. The repetition of the line 'Lips like sugar, sugar kisses' can be interpreted as a metaphor for the sweetness and temptation that this woman represents, but also for the ephemerality of these moments of intimacy. The song talks about a desire that is constant, but that is never fully satisfied, because as soon as you think you have reached that figure, it moves away, leaving only the memory of your 'sugar kisses'. The song also explores the idea of reflection and identity, as shown in the lines 'ela She'll be my mirror, reflect what I am, looser and winner'. This suggests a search for self-knowledge through others, where the female figure serves as a mirror for the lyrical self. The reference to the 'king of Zion' and the 'Siamese twin' can symbolize the duality of one's identity and the inextricable connection with the object of desire. In short, 'Lips Like Sugar' is a song that talks about the search for love and connection, and the fleeting sweetness that these experiences can bring.

The lead singer Ian Started in 1977 as a member of a band called The Crucial Three with Pete Wylie and Julian Cope. When they split each member formed a band that played an important part of the psychedelia scene in late 70s Liverpool, playing at the legendary Erics. Pete Wylie formed Wah and Julian Cope formed The Teardrop Explodes both successful acts in the early eighties. The debut single by The Bunnymen was produced by future member of the KLF Bill Drummond. Their debut album Crocodiles was produced by Ian Broudie later to form The Lightning Seeds.

It is funny how The Crucial Three is always mentioned. Julian Cope dismisses it because it was so short-lived, plus his feud with Ian over her sister. There is no doubt there was something in the air in Liverpool at the time. You can see why Courtney Love dumped herself there in 1982 and made a reputation annoying Julian and trying to steal Ian's coat.

They're even better live, up there with other post-punk, new wave bands: The Cure Depeche Mode, New Order, Love and Rockets, Gang of Four, Bauhaus. Start with studio versions of Bring on the Dancing Horses and Lips Like Sugar, but then 1984's Live From Royal Albert Hall - Heaven Up Here, No Dark Things, With a Hip, Never Stop... all amped up and with Ian likes to work in a few medleys like on Crocodiles with bits of songs by The Doors, The Beatles, Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones.

The Doors comparison is very astute Amber. The Doors and the Velvet Underground were big influences on The Bunnymen. The singer Ian McCulloch will love the fact you've compared his singing to Jim Morrisson. The song is very cinematic which is why it sounded perfect in Donnie Darko. The Echo in the band name was the name of the drum machine they used before Pete De Freitas became their drummer. Courtney Love turned Kurt Cobain onto the Bunnymen as she hung around with them when she lived in Liverpool.

Echo haunted my youth since their very beginning in the post-punk>New Wave/Romantic era of alternative rock. They were my anchor in this new music that finally became *mine* - something unique against what came before with my parents music (which I still love). All teens go through this phase, and it's exciting and profound. We get older and most times we realize it was just a "phase"... I feel fortunate that my phase with Echo, the Cure, Siouxie, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, and the rest of the 2nd British Invasion never really ended. They stood the test of time. Now my daughter has the pleasure of diving in and is just as enraptured as me. I look forward to you two going on that dive. Cuts to look for from Echo and the Bunnymen - Bring on the Dancing Horses, New Direction, Seven Seas, Bombers Bay, Bedbugs and Ballyhoo, Lovers on the Run

The song 'The Killing Moon' by the band Echo & The Bunnymen is a work that delves into deep themes such as destiny, love and death. Released in 1984, the song is often considered one of the most iconic of the group, who are known for their post-punk and atmospheric style. The lyrics, rich in poetic images and symbolism, suggest a narrative where destiny plays a central role, almost like an entity that has control over the characters in the story. The expression 'The Killing Moon' can be interpreted in several ways, but one of the most likely is the association with the inevitability of destiny. The moon is often a symbol of change and transition, and in this context, it can represent an omen or a decisive moment. The lyrics speak of an encounter under a 'blue moon', which is a rare event and therefore may symbolize a unique and significant moment in the narrator's life. The idea that it is 'too late to beg or cancel' suggests a resignation to what is to come, even if it is something unwanted or fatal, as the phrase 'killing time' suggests. The repetition of the line 'Fate up against your will' reinforces the notion that fate is a force against which the individual will struggles in vain. The song seems to suggest that, no matter how much one resists, destiny has a plan that will eventually be fulfilled. The idea of surrendering to him can be seen both romantically, as in surrendering to an inevitable love, and in a darker way, as in accepting one's own mortality. The duality between beauty and cruelty, present in the description of the kiss under the stars, captures the complexity of human emotions in the face of the inescapable. 'The Killing Moon' is a song that invites reflection on life, love and the role that fate plays in both.

My favorite new wave band. Have seen them more than any other post-punk -new wave-band/person from the late ‘70s/‘80s. Seen in every decade -and they are still touring. Lead singer, Ian McCullough, has a beautiful voice and beautiful face, and those “lips like sugar” have gotten “Mac the mouth” in trouble more than once. But the melodies and the lyrics-which are arguably pure poetry-are gorgeous and keep the fans coming and growing. The Wikipedia entry is practically book-length. Jump into the rabbit-hole and explore ; perhaps go chronologically . . . you will have a lovely winter.

The cool punk goth crowd were into The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsee and the Banshees, Killing Joke, Xmal Deutschland, New Order/Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Clan of Xymox, Bauhaus, Chamaleons, The Cult, etc. And modern bands like Frozen Autumn, She Past Away, Twin Tribes, Lebanon Hanover, etc . Dark wave/post-punk, new wave. The Doors/Jim Morrison were huge influences for bands like this you are right. "The Cutter", "Lips like Sugar" and "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo" are next ones to check out from Echo and the Bunnymen.

Lips Like Sugar should be next. Love that you mentioned Jim Morrison. They recorded a PHENOMENAL song called Bedbugs and Ballyhoo, which they recorded with Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek. Has a great Doors sound mixed with Echo’s dark 80s new wave.

There was a lot of bands from Liverpool started in Eric's from the mighty wah, Echo and the bunnymen, Dead or alive, OMD, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Teardrops explodes, China Crisis, the icicle works and many more bands.

Nice one. An incredible vocalist and band, they really walked their own path. As their contemporaries, U2, set about conquering America, the Bunnymen toured Iceland (unheard of then) and Scandinavia. Bang on that The Doors and Velvet Underground were big influences, as was David Bowie. The guitarist, Will Sergeant, once said that on this song the bass was influenced by Russian balalaika bands (another place they toured during the old Communist era). In addition to the many song recommendations, I’d vouch for The Back of Love. Such incredible energy, drive and vocal range, it was the song that made me a Bunnymen fan.

With Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxiee & the Banshees, and The Cure, you two have taken your first steps into the darker side of '80s Wave, also known as Goth. I can't wait for you to discover Bauhaus. "She's in Parties" might be a good start, or maybe "Spirit." Their take on Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" is the song that solidified my undying fandom.

Hello couple 🙌 here Rubens Bonfim, at 57 years old, an old BOY from Brazil/Amazonia/President Lula 👏, captured by the band's ship in 1985 (I think I can consider myself one of the Bunnymen 😁), who enjoyed and enjoys the English bands and 80s adjacencies such as The Cure, Soiuxsie & Banshees, Joy Division and its offshoot New Order, Tears for Fears, Simple Minds, The Smiths, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, Tha Jam (Paul Weller), Bauhaus, PiL, etc. .. and of course the spectacular Echo & The Bunnymen, in the chilling/cutting vocals of a seductive lip that always borders on danger or unusual, when delivering his verses, namely... Ian McCulloch always relevant 🙌 And yes, he is a great fan of Jim Morrison and his band The Doors, so much so that they re-recorded a cover of them for the film The Lost Boys (1987) directed by Joel Schumacher 👏 the classic song People Are Stranger, is my immediate recommendation, especially because when I hear you commenting on the song of the "assanina moon", I saw that you were fully involved in the unfolding of its elements, I was excited by the sensitivity that it awakened in you, how it involved you 😁 I love ❤️ following the channel, and the universe (around me), which I find on other people's suggestions... You are brilliant, and from here in "terra brasilis" I wish the channel eternal life, health, peace and lots of love for the beautiful family you built 🙏🙌👏✌️🌺☀️💪👋😁

Thanks so much for finally getting to this one! It can NOT be overstated how much this album, song, and band are cornerstones of 80's Alternative! Front man, Ian McCulloch, is emblematic of the era. "Seven Seas", "Bring On The Dancing Horses", and "Lips like Sugar" would be my next recommendations. Edit: Everyone sleeps on "Ocean Rain" the title track of this album (probably because of its slow tempo), but its another very solid one!

Pleasantly surprised to see Echo & The Bunnymen. I suggested them maybe a month or two ago (but I'm sure other people did as well). They are truly one of the great bands of the 80's, but I think they didn't get as big in the US as The Cure and Depeche Mode, simply because of how silly the name seems. But they have an incredible catalog of songs. For some faster, funkier tunes you can go back to "Never Stop" "Do it Clean" "The Cutter" or "The Back of Love". For more chill, mysterious hits like this one check out "Lips Like Sugar" "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo" "Bring on the Dancing Horses" "Silver" "Seven Seas."

The "Echo" in the band name refers to the drum machine they utilized when they started; wten they recruited a human drummer, and just kept the name. Amber was spot-on; Echo & The The Bunnymen were on the "new psychedlia" end of 80s UK new wave bands, and singer/ guitarist/ songwriter Ian McCulloch was compared to Jim Morrison by many critics at the time (I'm sure you'll see a lot of requests for their cover of The Door's "People Are Strange" in the comments- which they did for "The Lost Boys' soundtrack".) This was from their quietest (by far) album, 1984's "Ocean Rain"- their 4th album at this point. Its slower, darker pace and acoustic arrangements threw a lot of people off guard- in a good way. They had a string of indie hits throughout the 80's- "Rescue", "Do It Clean", "No Dark Things", "Show Of Strength", "The Cutter", "Seven Seas", "Bring On The Dancing Horses", "Lips Like Sugar". You may also want to check out "Proud To Fall", from Ian McCulloch's first solo abum from 1989, "Candleland", after The Bunnymen's first break-up, and immediately following the death of Bunnymen drummer Pete DeFreitas in a motorcylde crash earlier that year (McColloch dedicated the "Candleland" album to him).

Lots of bands in the early 80s felt the influence of Post-Punk and from Joy Division, including The Cure and this ones. I loved this song back in the days and I do now! Ian MacCulloch said “It’s about everything, from birth to death to eternity and God - whatever that is - and the eternal battle between fate and the human will. It contains the answer to the meaning of life. It’s my ‘To be or not to be.'”.

My very favourite ' Echo and the Bunnymen' single.🫶💕 Amber your lovely "Thin Lizzy" top has me thinking that you guys would love "The Boomtown Rats" an Irish post punk era band. "Rat Trap" from 1978 is a gem ,great stoorytelling lyrics, brilliant theatrical energetic music ,great brass, great keyboards, fab guitar and a charismatic Bob Geldof front man. ( This guy was the person who came up with the inspirational " Band Aid" Charity single "Do they know it's Christmas"and the massive Wembley concert after he had seen a news report on the desperate famines in Ethiopia in 1983/84 which led in turn to the USA for Africa single in 1985. The Boomtown Rats also had big hits with "I dont like Mondays" ( inspired by a mass shooting carried out by a young girl student in the US) But "Rat Trap" ( the original demo version from 1978 is a genius piece of punk- pop ,youll love it ,i guarantee it 🫶💕) Bono has said that Geldof and The Boomtown Rats were an influence !!!
