Ray Stevens was a reluctant comedian. He wanted to do serious music, but his audience preferred the novelty songs. So he reluctantly became a sort of temu version of Jim Stafford, who was a guitar virtuoso. Ray's songs bear a strong resemblance to Jim's comedy numbers. Jim seemed to be so self-conscious about his talent that he would do something funny in the middle of a serious piece. His rendition of Malaguena is a good example. And Wildwood Weed is definitely worth a listen!

Several others here have recommended "Everything is Beautiful." I agree. Ray Stevens's Grammy Award-winning song (1971) is worth checking out. It's a complete departure from his comedy, and it has a wonderful message. Watch the 1970 version. Ray looks so young.
