I like Neil Diamond's earlier songs a lot. This is one of them: extremely well-crafted and flawlessly executed. Other favorites include "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon," "Solitary Man," and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show." His " I'm a Beliver" for the Monkees was pure pop perfection!

I've nominated "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" before, and I see others have echoed that here. But let me add a caveat: If you do it, do the studio recording, NOT a live performance. The studio recording is SO much better! Honestly, all of Neil's early stuff from 1972 and earlier) is, in m opinon, better than his more "adult" stuff. He went from being a pretty hip singer/songwriter to being more of an adult contemporary singer for our parents. It's like after "Song Sung Blue," he completely forgot his rock roots.

I just checked and the live version was actually from 1971, via a small, intimate performance for the BBC. There's also a video of his Brothers Love performance from the same set. His studio performances, while great, are typically more subdued and less raw than his live versions, more so than with most performers.

Omg, I cannot hear Neil Diamond without thinking of my friend from high school. He was a huge Dead head (literally, conceived at Woodstock, and his "how I spent my summer" report in the fall at the beginning of school was always "me and my family traveled with the Dead.") In his early 20s, he worked at a place that, as their company Christmas party, was taking everyone to a holiday Neil Diamond concert. He wasn't going to go at first ("not my music, not my scene,") but we tried to convince him to go. "They're renting a limo, all your work friends are going-- just go and be social. I'm sure you'll find a way to have at least a little fun!" The next day, we asked, "so, how was the show?" He looked around, then said so no one else could hear, "It. Was AMAZING!!!" The more he talked, the less self-conscious he became, and by the end, he didn't care who heard him sing Neil's praises-- "Neil's quite the showman-- best show I ever saw. EVER!!!" A convert of the highest order!!! Neil RULES!!! 🥰 I would love to see y'all react to Love on the Rocks or Sweet Caroline

That is so funny! Makes you wonder how many other people have missed out on ND because they thought they knew what he was about but they were completely mistaken. That’s actually kind of sad but I’m glad your friend went to the concert. In a way I think it would be cool to go without expecting anything and then being blown away by the music and the showmanship. I hope he had a chance to go later as a fan who was more familiar with the songs.

Neil Diamond's "Beautiful Noise" was the last song Mum heard as she passed away, in her bed surrounded by her kids. His music is a huge part of the soundtrack of our childhood, and we were lucky to be able to take Mum to see Neil in concert for her 70th birthday; it was her first concert. You should also check out "Morningside" "Coldwater Morning" (which still leaves me with chills even after hearing it all my life) and "Modernday Version of Love". And of course "Mr Bojangles" which still makes me cry. Pretty much anything you listen to by Neil Diamond is going to blow you away. His song writing is solid old-school story telling at its finest. Enjoy the ride ✌️

Dedicated Diamond fans know the Bang years (get the 'Just for You' LP/CD) and yes, that falsetto in Cold Water Morning. His 'Hot August Night' got me hooked on Neil. I could fly all night long to the 4th track (8-track) or 4th side of the double LP. Go on and "Do it". Cracklin' Rosie was the first 45rpm I ever bought. I was born in '59. Time for 'Brother Love".

Two years after he wrote it, Neil Diamond said this about Holly Holy when introducing it at a concert in 1971: “This song is a stream of consciousness song. Which means, essentially, you never listen to the lyrics. You just listen to the feelings that they convey. And that’s why, to me, it has magic. But you can’t listen to it. You just have to feel it.“ Jay, ***If you really want a "down-by-the-water church revival" song from Neil, watch his riveting performance of "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" next.*** kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJmqfqCjmZ58rtU

"Holly Holy" was Neil Diamond's 19th single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking @ #6. It entered the chart 11/1/69 and charted for 14 weeks. At that point in time, it was Diamond's 4th Top 10 single. "Cherry, Cherry," "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon," & "Sweet Caroline" were the first 3. Great song that gives you Neil’s vocal diversity. But! As I commented once before, you need to listen to him more in live format. His live albums and the versions of the songs will blow you away. He uses that “gravely” voice more often, and it’s awesome to here it followed by the smooth, crooning voice. What a talent. Unfortunately we will never here him again in concert. Thankfully there are tons of performances recorded for us to enjoy for decades to come. More Diamond!!!!

My Mom had this album when I was a kid and I remember being so fascinated by this song. Thank you for listening to it! On a sad note - I'm sure you saw we lost Sinead O'Connor today. I think you've only done one song of hers thus far. Could you please check out "I Am Stretched On Your Grave." That would be most appropriate to honor her, I think. Thanks, guys!

I love it when you do Neil. Like all the other comments below, YOU WANT A CHURCH REVIVAL VIBE, Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show nails it (Especially the Live Version).

You guys really owe it to yourselves to listen to the version from his 1973 "Hot August Night" live album. It was performed at The Greek Theater in L.A., and it's very likely the most intense performance I've heard from him. Amazing tone, and a great example of "channeling". 😳😎

Neil is da man! THE G.O.A.T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Saw him LIVE 22 times. Many glorious memories. Oh how I wish there could have been a 23rd. I truly miss him. They say that Parkinson's hits the elderly twice as hard than it would a younger person. I hope and pray he is doing well as can be expected. We were blessed to have been granted such a talented singer/songwriter and a class act performer as Neil from God almighty. He is beloved by millions around the world. His music will out live most of us alive today. I'm certain of this. There will NEVER be another performer like him. 💎IS FOREVER ....

Nice show you guys, I'm a retired old man and songwriter myself who grew up listening to this guy. He was the best at what he did, a great singer/songwriter and performer. Nice to see young folks like yourselves enjoying this old wonderful classic music. Neil had so many of these great timeless songs !! .... Enjoy your channel !

Hey Jay and Amber! I absolutely loved your reaction to Neil Diamond's "Holly Holy." It was fantastic! 😊 I encourage you both to explore more of Neil Diamond's songs, and I must say, the live version of "Holly Holy" from his album "Hot August Night" (1972) is simply superior. It's one of the greatest live albums of all time, and the energy and emotion in the live versions surpass many studio recordings. Break the rules and go straight for the live version with your reactions. Sending you both much love in this message! ❤️🎶

You should review the Jazz Singer. He really shines, not as an actor, but as a vocalist. And it is a very beautiful story.
