She sang and did an interview on the Merv Griffen show 4 days before she was bed ridden and 3 weeks before she died. I am SO glad y'all picked this song - I've been begging for it for months! Her daughter is actress/comedian Maya Rudolph. At the end of this song, she repeats "Maya" as a love note to her daughter. The song perfectly highlights her coloratura soprano range. - which is unlike any I've heard. She wrote the lyrics & music (the music was based on a tune she would hum to Maya). She tragically died of breast cancer in 1979 at 31. President Jimmy Carter presented her with the American Cancer Society's Courage Award in 1978. Minnie is one of the great, but nearly forgotten singers that were spectacular in their own right. She began her career as a member of The Gems ( There was also a new York group of the same name) who were a Chicago girl group in the 1960s. The group became the primary backup vocal group for Chess Records. The group included Minnie who also recorded under the name Andrea Davis, who would go on to a career with the Chicago pscych-rock group Rotary Connection before embarking on a solo career highlighted by her hit song "Lovin' You." As a member of The Gems she provided the background vocals for one of the greatest R&B hits of the 60's, 'Rescue Me' sung by the equally forgotten but incredibly spectacular artist Fontella Bass. The musicians on that recording included Maurice White and Louis Satterfield later of Earth, Wind and Fire and Leonard Caston of MoTown. Minnie was one of the very 1st celebrities who went public with her breast cancer diagnosis. She passed at 31 in 1979.

Minnie and also Deniece Williams were way ahead of the game. Did Jordan use the word "screech" to describe Minnie's voice? Yikes! There will be coal in his Christmas stocking tomorrow morning. Amber, Minnie was known to wear baby's breath (which I love) in her hair regularly. If not that, she'd often have some sort of decorative item in her hair. The part where she says "my, my, my..."; in the longer version she clearly says "Maya, Maya, Maya.....", who is her daughter, actress Maya Rudolph. Maya was a baby at the time and she would sing to her and added her name to the song. :) Check out her song "Memory Lane" (sometimes titled "Back Down Memory Lane".)
