That "scatting" at the very end was her saying, "Maya, Maya, Maya, Maya." As others said below, she wrote it for her daughter, the wonderful Maya Rudolph. I'm glad Maya has this as a reminder of how much her mother loved her.

Hey husband, the one playing guitar, wrote the song for her. It was his love song to her. She was dying from breast cancer during the recording of the video. She fought on for 3 or 4 more years, loss the use of her right arm to cancer but kept singing on stage and TV. She sang and did an interview on the Merv Griffen show 4 days before she was bed ridden and 3 weeks before she died. She wasn't able to walk on her own at that point and had to be helped on to the stage to sing two song for Merv. 31...WAY too young. F-cancer...

She was amazing and had such a sweet voice. I tear up whenever I hear it. And it was EVERYWHERE you went back then. On radio, in the mall, in the grocery store, at your friends house. You just heard this song everywhere. That is her Husband Richard Rudolph in the video. They both wrote this song and many other songs together. She passed away at the too young age of 31 years old, and was said that she died in her husband's arms. He said they were so in love until her death, and that he still felt many years later like a part of him was missing.

I am SO glad y'all picked this song - I've been begging for it for months! Her daughter is actress/comedian Maya Rudolph. At the end of this song, she repeats "Maya" as a love note to her daughter. The song perfectly highlights her coloratura soprano range. - which is unlike any I've heard. She wrote the lyrics & music (the music was based on a tune she would hum to Maya). She tragically died of breast cancer in 1979 at 31. President Jimmy Carter presented her with the American Cancer Society's Courage Award in 1978. You should also listen to her songs "Les Fleurs', "Expecting", "Reasons" & "Seeing You This Way".

Minnie is one of the great, but nearly forgotten singers that were spectacular in their own right. She began her career as a member of The Gems ( There was also a new York group of the same name) who were a Chicago girl group in the 1960s. The group became the primary backup vocal group for Chess Records. The group included Minnie who also recorded under the name Andrea Davis, who would go on to a career with the Chicago pscych-rock group Rotary Connection before embarking on a solo career highlighted by her hit song "Lovin' You." As a member of The Gems she provided the background vocals for one of the greatest R&B hits of the 60's, 'Rescue Me' sung by the equally forgotten but incredibly spectacular artist Fontella Bass. The musicians on that recording included Maurice White and Louis Satterfield later of Earth, Wind and Fire and Leonard Caston of MoTown. Minnie was one of the very 1st celebrities who went public with her breast cancer diagnosis. She passed at 31 in 1979.

Amber mentioned that she felt Minnie transported her to paradise. Minnie Riperton has a wonderful song called “Adventures in Paradise” that really shows off her vocal range.

Wonderful memories of living on the beach in Puerto Rico, first love, and beautiful moments. Life was so simple then. Roberta Flack's First Time I Saw Your Face is another beautiful love song from that era.

Yay, finally! Now you know why many of us wanted you to see what we meant by Mariah and Ariana not being the pioneers of whistle register singers. Minnie and also Deniece Williams were way ahead of the game. Did Jordan use the word "screech" to describe Minnie's voice? Yikes! There will be coal in his Christmas stocking tomorrow morning. Amber, Minnie was known to wear baby's breath (which I love) in her hair regularly. If not that, she'd often have some sort of decorative item in her hair. The part where she says "my, my, my..."; in the longer version she clearly says "Maya, Maya, Maya.....", who is her daughter, actress Maya Rudolph. Maya was a baby at the time and she would sing to her and added her name to the song. :) Check out her song "Memory Lane" (sometimes titled "Back Down Memory Lane".)

This song brings back my childhood memories in full force. I can vividly picture myself and my sister in back of our Mom's 1972 VW bug, cruising the coast on highway 1 in California with this song playing at full volume.

Minnie was such a beautiful soul with a voice of a goddess. Great reaction. Have you reacted to Yma Sumac's song Chuncho? Another woman with an unworldly voice.
